Exhaust - Centre box swap for straight thru
« on: 14 January 2009, 17:08:37 »

Hi,

anyone removed the centre boxes on a V6 and replaced with straight-through pipes from CATs to back box?
Will it be/is it very loud??

Just thinking up more money saves mods :)

never run straight through pipes but when replacing my rusted originals i wanted to see what was ht the silencer boxs in the centre sections, they are baffled, there was a mention that they where empty, but no def. have baffles. So would have to presume a straight through, from cats back, system would be considerably louder. Nice as the v6 sound is, any louder and i would find it annoying personally. Esp on motorways. Huh

if you keep the baffled mid pipe then minus the backbox sounds quite meaty :P
it's ok- you get lots of angry animal noises when hammering and sounds very V8-y and is really quiet with very light throttle (tends to gurgle a bit at low rpm though lol) so hence sounds rather pants at low revs so should avoid use of footdown at low revs

Would assume it may affect back pressure given bad performance but would wait for someone with more expertise to confirm :-/.

from what i gather, the finger of suspicion falls on the manifolds when it comes to any restriction, these are cast into a plenum rather than a single pipe per pot converging further down. Some say this is to give a passenger friendly ride, some say its down to cost over a tubular manifold. Both are probably likely. Whatever, GM dont spend millions on r and d for nothing. Imho, dont mess with it...

depending on the car and engine really, some run better with more of less back pressure,
as chris says the manifolds are believed to be the most restrictive bit of the exhaust system -anyway i have a feeling that they're cheap and cheerful rather than expensive and help deliver the most from the V6

It's more just a cost option. I've just replaced both CATs and I'm loathe to spend another £100+ due to one of the mid-boxes going. I can't imagine there being a performance benefit in having 2 additional sound-deadening baffles in the system over straight-through pipes to the back box. They must surely be there purely for passenger comfort. Just wondering if anyone had experience of removing them?
