Misting up
« on: 05 January 2009, 17:01:39 »

Hi i have not had my elite for long but every time i use it all the windows mist up and even with everything blowing full it does not clear completly. The only thing i can do is drive around with the window open slightly. There are no leaks that i can see and the filter is clean. Any ideas please.

Two main possibilities:

1. Rain leak. Check for dampness in the carpets around the doors. There is supposed to be a plastic sheet inside the door to deflect any water away from the cabin. If the door trim has ever been off, it might not be sealed or might not be there at all. Check also rubber door seals

2. Leaking heater matrix. check for dampness in the carpets under the driver and passenger side. If it is leaking coolant you should be able to feel dampness somewhere or even smell it as it will have coolant in it. Check also to see coolant level in the engine bay.

It might also suggest that the Air con isn't working? Mine mists up a little when i have the Eco button pressed but always clears with the AC on.

Also, check the drivers side cubby hole in the boot is clear - this is the exhaust vent for the cabin, and if its blocked with rags/CDs/tools/junk, the car doesn't refresh the air too well.

...and make sure the passenger side scuttle is clear (below the pollen filter) or you're puling in air over a puddle ;)

Main reason for 'misting up' is people have the 'ECO' button on so as to save money, you may gain 1mpg but you can't see the way forward due to the 'mist'.  :o
The 'air-con' controls the temperture and dries the incoming air ie reducing 'misty windows'.  :y

This one rings true with my estate. When I have the cover pulled fully over any luggage to keep out prying eyes etc, the windows mist up quite badly. However with the cover pushed back, no problem with misting up. I can only conclude that the cabin air cannot escape past the cover and out through the vents at the rear of the car.  :y

I have an estate which also used to mist up. Never tried pulling back the rear cover but that could be a good idea. I also found that cleaning the glass really well then appling an Anti Mist (available from Halfuds) helps greatly although can produce minimal smearing. :y

Be aware that the earlier face lifts occasionaly have a problem where teh climate sits on re-circ......pressing the re-circ button to cycl it through the settings sorts it out!

check pollen filter isnt damp
check the trim on top of the pollen filter is seated properly
as said check boot cubby hole isnt full of things blocking air escaping.
make sure windows are very clean
I dont normally need to use air con to demist. :y

Iused to have surprise misting up. Read up on the forum to check under the scuttle, and was gobsmacked to find water to a depth of about 5" under the pollen filter housing. I used a pressure hose on the drain hole location and it all suddenly "glugged away"no trouble since. In fact the car interior is now, 2 weeks later much dryer. What a score!! :y :y :y
