I posted here a week back about the explod omega - having not bought it, just looking ofr some byers advice. A lot of meggys around 130K on 03 plates - If these have full SH are they a better bet than a lower mileage older car??

I currently have a lowish mileage '98 CD (94K) and the engine is great.... bodywork needs attention tho' - what would I get for that?

High mileage with service history need not be a problem - an older car always gives more grief in my experience

I am hoping it holds on well for the long drive I plan during easter w/e - if it does not; I am getting rid of it..

Suhas it will. Everything seems to be ok with when you brought it over to me that Sunday so it shouldn't cause you any problems.

As long as the car has a full service history then it should not matter at all as long as the bodywork is in good condition.
As with a lower mileaged older car then you could get problems with the bodywork but it depends on wether the older car has full service history as well. If you are going to keep the car for a very long time then it shouldn't matter what you get if you are prepared to spend time and money to bring it back to standard.

My V reg. cdx Auto 2.2 has now done just over 142,000 and has full service history. My personal preferance is for higher mileage cars, with History of good service, better than low miles as a shopping car that has not reached 'working temp: Bodywork is very good and mechanically, I have no problems that bother me. Guess with cars of today, it's either mechanical or bodywork, whichever is your preferance to accept.

If body work is rough £200-£400 for it if anything

I agree 100% with this - long gone are the days where an engine needs rebuilding once it reaches 70k.

As long as it's been well serviced, there's no reason at all to shy away from a high-miler.

Know that the following might be blas-for-me.

Bought my son 1996 (n plate 1.4) Honda civic last year with 179k. WHAT 179K I hear you shout on a little 1.4.

BUT ITS GOT FULL HONDA SERVICE HISTORY  (Old boy had it from new)  When I test drove it, it was like new, better than my 2006 Astra work car

Mine is 2002 with full service history and 53,600 miles and is the most problem free omega I have had  

It's also in nearly mint condition

So it is worth holding out and hunting hard, which is what I did

just to chip in boys i got my £300, 2.5 v6, 94 m reg miggy with 103k on the clock and one oil change and coolant swap and it ticks over quiter than many newer models and goes like the preverbial off a shovel!!!

Neither ..My primary concern is body condition..Which is very hard to repair and correct..

chasis,paint , chairs, electonic components..mechanic problems and engine are easy to solve mostly..

Agree with everything said. However, I'm glad my car only got 40k of Vauxhall "full service history" (that's only 1 oil change before I got it).  

In some respects, good body condition is key. Mechanical parts can always be replaced when they wear out. Not so easy to remedy a body full of creases or where tin worm has started.

I think its all pot luck to be honest!

You could go to VX tomorrow and by two brand new Insignia's, treat them both the same (ie If one car goes out, the other does too!). And its only going to be a matter of time before something goes wrong, and I would put money on the same fault not happening on the other car at the same time (if at all). (Not including common faults, or serviceable items)

I'm not a fan of low mileage cars, unless you know the car (ie friends / family member etc). The other fears of low mileage cars are old granny owners, who have owned it since new who can’t drive properly. My grans fiesta for example is M reg and done 35k miles (ok, its scrap almost because of rust), its only been out of York twice, and that was when my dad borrowed it! So basically its done 35k CITY miles.

The other day my dad went to tesco with my gran (she had been in hospital) to help her restock her kitchen. My dad drove her car, and she said to him when he got on the ring road 'Oh, your in 5th gear!'. Dad replied 'Yes why?', gran says 'I don’t think I’ve ever used 5th gear in all the time I’ve had it! I rarely use 4th too!!!!'
