Dash warning lights, abs,TC,
« on: 18 April 2009, 09:53:14 »

Hi Guys,

Has anyone ever had the same problem as I have got this morning and if so what was found to be the cause!

I have an a fault where the warning lights come on on the dash for the ABS and also the Trac Cont, both come on at the same time as well as the speedo needle not working, It seems to happen on about 80% of trips in the car. They all happen at the same time and am a bit curious as to why the speedo needle fails to work as well as the tc and abs as I did not think they were linked.

Any help would be great as will get a speeding ticket soon as I can't tell what speed I am doing at all, Having to go around with the tomtom on everywhere to see my speed  :-/  ;)

As others have said, ABS ECU, esp if its a post 1998 car.

By all accounts, a right pig to get to, but once removed, can be repaired for around £125

Yep, yep, yep ^^^^^ what they said - happened to me a short while back :(

That said, sourced a replacement and (after failing miserably to fit it myself  :'( ) got the job done and all is well again :)

Thanks for all your replies guys, Just a thought, would it be advisable to check the abs sensors on the wheels before I go forking out a wedgefull of cash to a garage for a new ecu unit? The reason I ask is that the faulty abs & tc lights come and go and seems to be an erratic problem when they come on the power steering also goes along with the speedo not working.

I would have thought that if the ecu has gone "it is gone" and no in between, sounds to me like it may be a sensor problem, perhaps removal and clean of all the sensors will cure it?

So does anyone know where the abs wheel sensors are located on each wheel? think the speedo related one is on the n/s/r.

If the ecu has gone, I am not paying the 800 odd quid that vx will bill me for, does anyone know where you can get recon ecu unit from or a cheaper way of repair?

Any help would be great, cheers

terribly sorry old boy, I am a little tired.....the failure of the ECU is due to a broken bond wire inside and hence why they are intermittent.

Thanks for the link, so, in a nutshell, I have to take off the unit, send it by post for them to repair and refit it when it returns?

I have heard it is a pig to get out and even worse to put back in yourself. I suppose having a garage to remove it, wait till it is back and fit it again will be out of the question as well as expensive.

have same sort of prob with my elite, the abs & tc lights are on, speedo ok though, new ecu july 07. went to vaux the other day, tech 2 wont talk to the ecu, but after disconnecting ecu & re-plugging the abs light went out. 100 yrds down the road & it was back on. would this be the same prob as above?.  :-?

I have this problem too - ABS, TC and speedo + power steering.

Just visited my local garage and they checked it on one of these plug in diagnostic things and it recorded lowered voltage from the battery and poor sensor signals from a couple of places - also my power steering fuild was low.

A top up and reset later and all seems ok at the moment - will keep you posted.
