Snow Chains and Tyre Socks

hey mate....new here...can u give some advice on snow tyre chains and tyre socks on the omega..?...are they any good, or worth it...considering  i have an auto? coz  the omega being rear wheel...seen a lot of struggling drivers out there this week...!? I ain't  had the chance to try and drive a rear wheel drive car in the snow yet! am very curious! my omega is sitting down in the snow!  :-[

I was looking at the Autosocks web site earlier. One thing they mentioned was that RWD cars should have the socks fitted to front and rear wheels.

Also noticed that the sites I looked at that sold these products were pretty much out of stock - wonder why? :)

I've mentioned this in a different post. If you get something heavy in the boot (I use 2 quite big paving slabs) you will find you are as good/better than a front wheel drive. A front wheel drive tends to loose its advantage going up hills as they loose some of the weight on their front wheels.

I've also got 4 season tyres (mud and snow rated, but can be used in the summer). I don't know yet how much they will wear in the summer, but they are great in the snow. I got mine from www.mytyres.co.uk as you can't get them easily in the UK yet. By the way, I've not bought them because of the snow this year - my tyres needed replacing in November.

Tried "socks" many years ago.. but not on an Omega .. hated the things. Always buy a set of chains when I change the car.

Got mine from these guys some while back.... (Good old Vx .. tyre szes the same on both the old one and this one  :y :y :y)

These are very similar to the ones I have. 5 minutes to put on/remove. Live in the boot in these conditions. I use them to get off the estate, pull into the bus stop and remove to drive on the cleared (?) roads.

what problems did you have with the 'socks'? Seen some of those Rapid response ambulance cars using them, looked like the worked well, but that was FWD.

Do you put your chains on front and rear?

"socks" were used on the older Granada.. square type not the Scorpio , I found they just bunged up with ice the same as the tyres did, albeit slightly slower !! So I went back to chains  :)

Only ever put chains on the back in UK, most main roads are clear and you just need that extra bit to get from the estate roads to the main road.

Have put chains on all round, but not on an Omega, driving in Alpine regions in winter... 1) 'cos its the law  :)  2) cos its a darned sight different to a few inches that causes UK PLC to grind to a halt !!

I find it amazing that the rest of Europe copes with this sort of weather for 3 months every year ... but we can't do 3 days of it !!!

You think I jest .... stupid woman up the road who saw me drive the little hill up the road (which is VERY slippery) with chains has got some from somewhere ......  and has got her (equally stupid) husband to put them on the rear wheels .... of her clit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I suppose she saw them onthe rear of mine and thought .... or perhaps she didn't !!!

So on an Omega .. the back ones .. :) then drive slowly or you'll have lots of grip at the back and none at the front .... front wheel skids are not to be advised !!!!

Like climbing my driveway at the moment. You need to carry enough momentum up the slope of the driveway to get the back wheels off the packed down snow on the road onto the bit of pavement that I've salted... but there's always the thought that if the front end doesn't bite I could demolish the fence, mount a huge pile of snow that's been shovelled off the drive and land on the neighbour's driveway. :o

Too bloody right ... noise, tyre wear, risk of damage .... once off the nasty stuff take them off .. and don't go above about 10-15 mph with them on.... 

despite what the adverts say about doing 40 mph "safely" .... if the grip is so poor you need chains.. you should be going slowly.
