I always stick on back, regardless of fwd/rwd.  front easier to control than rear when grip disappears

Correct :y :y

....... that lead to getting 4 tyres .. but it wasn't the plan !!

An expensive day out then!  ::)  :y  :y

Sure was ....and it got worse ....  when he took the rear wheels off to change the tyres he informed me that one pad had disintegrated and was about to score the disc .. :( I drove home without trying to use the brakes

So the saga became from car wearing a front tyre oddly ...

trip to WIM to be told wishbones shot
trip home
change wishbones
trip to WIM
4 tyres
Full alignement
trip home
New rear pads

Luckily the discs were OK, I had them checked out by a specialist .. :)

Had the same at end of summer hols. When we got back from spain. Tyres ok at start but had a 1/4 inch bead of canvas showing on the inside edge of 2 at the end....5 mill tread on the rest of those tyres. other 2 at 2 mill, so  tyres 4, front discs, w'bones, did shocks as well.    £££££££££££

Wheels In Motion

Probably the best wheel alignement centre in the UK.

Tony has his own database of settings for Omegas that are better than standard, all his staff care about what they do, he encourages you to ask questions and watch work done..

and he gives a discount to OOF members

http://www.blackboots.co.uk

I can't praise them enough

As a minor example .. in the above list... I was booked in for an alignement .. 1 hour on the ramp, so no other booking could be taken. When I got there, the car went onto the ramp and he checked the car .. wishbones were shot, so no point in doing the alignement, so I went to pay for the booked time to be told .. "we don't charge for doing nothing, get the wishbones done and ring us back for another booking."

How many places would do that ???

Right, while I still don't agree with :-
"Whether you have front or rear wheel drive, we recommend that you use newer tyres for the rear set, for extra safety in unforeseen or difficult situations (emergency braking, tight bends etc) particularly on wet surface"
Because, front wheels do most of the braking, so it seemed wise to have the best tread on them.
BUT, I will now change my views and fit the best tyres on the back.
Thanks Chaps  :y

imho forget about the theories..

if you are trying to climb a snowy/icy hill you must have them on the driving tires depending on fwd/rwd.. who cares oversteer/understeer if you cant go anywhere ;D

and 2nd step if you are able to move than you must be able to stop ;D

so if I'm in that situation for a fwd I'll use them on the front.. for a rwd definitely I'll buy 4 and use something named visa..

Agreed-rwd all four must be A1, fwd best tyres to front as long as backs are reasonable enough.

Note from Pirelli technical:-

NEW TYRES TO THE REAR
An analysis of technical enquiries received through the Pirelli Technical "Hot Line" has confirmed the belief that many customers - dealers and users alike - are of the opinion that, when only two tyres are replaced on a car, they should be fitted to the front "axle". This was undoubtedly the case a number of years ago when it was felt that the retention of vehicle control was more critical with front wheel deflations and, therefore, that the new, and thus less vulnerable tyres should be fitted to the front.
However, the current recommendation on the part of the tyre Industry is, as a general rule, NEW TYRES TO THE REAR. This applies to both front and rear wheel drive cars.
Primarily, the justification is increased safety, particularly in the wet, where it has been demonstrated that, with the partly worn tyres fitted to the rear, their diminished water dispersal capability leads to a greater tendency towards oversteer and thus loss of control. Similarly, straight line braking, in the wet can be adversely affected.
It is also arguable that used tyres are more prone to punctures and since it has now been established that rear deflations are more likely to cause loss of control, this is another reason for fitting new tyres to the rear.
As a secondary benefit for the owners of low mileage front wheel drive cars, the switching of the partly worn rear tyres to the front, enabling the new tyres to be fitted to the rear, creates a cycle which helps prevent their deterioration due to ageing/prolonged exposure. The rear tyres wear relatively slowly and leaving them in their original positions for a prolonged period can result in the need to replace them before they are significantly worn.
Note: There are certain circumstances where the principle of NEW TYRES TO THE REAR does not or may not apply. For example:
• Where the front and rear tyre sizes are different.
• Where the two new tyres are of a lower speed rating.
• Where the characteristic rear concave wear pattern has developed to an extent that moving rear tyres to the front would affect the stability of the car.
• Where the PZero System™ (directional tyre at the front, asymmetric at the rear) is adopted.
• With certain combinations of winter and summer tyres.
• On certain four wheel drive vehicles where it would result in significant differences in tread depth.
