Engine management light ON/OFF 2.2dti
« on: 25 February 2010, 23:33:40 »

Right I have this little question.

When I start the car from cold (Allowing Glow Plug Light to go off)

The Engine Management light goes off, then 5 seconds later comes back on, but after a quick rev or 30secs drive up the road it goes off and stays off.

What could this be signalling?
Or is this common.

Car is:-
2.2 Dti Estate
40,000 on the clock
2003 plate
CD spec
Full Dealer Service History (7 Stamps up to date)

Due a Service by end of March

Any advice appreciated. (Also if this is a problem what sort of PENNIES is it going to cost to fix??

Regards

Sorry, no idea, but my diseasal Astra has just started oing something very similar. The EML goes out when I turn the ignition on, but by the time the glow plug light has gone out the EML is back on again. By the time I get to the end of the road it's gone out again.
I need my Dad's laptop to read the code. ...... when I get round to it  ;D  ;D  ;D

Thats a wild stab in the dark  :-?

I would recommend having the codes read (by somebody who knows what they are doing - which rules out most garages, and virtually all dealers) before jumping to any conclusions. And certainly don't change parts on a hunch!

my 2.2 dti did something very simaliar,
bad to start on cold days and after a couple of seconds after car as started the EML comes back on and only went off after the car was revd hard of driven hundred yards
i replaced all 4 glows plugs at weekend, tested the old ones and found that only one was working,
now the car starts up on 1st turn of key after the glow plug goes out and the EML light stays of, i read somewhere that the glow plugs stay on for a while after the engine as started and the ecu detects a fault if even one of the plugs isnt getting hot.
 any hope this helps

Have suffered this exact problem on my 2.2dti several times. I believe the EML light goes out after the glow plugs have completed heating, remebering that they  go on heating after the engine has started say 2-3 mins on a cold day. Normally P1635 code is stored (if I have remembered this correctly!) which translates to something uniformative like " 5v ref cct#2"  I  have allways found one or two glow plugs duff. They should test  about 1 - 3 Ohms when good, when bad 2 - 300 Ohms or dis  is not unusual.  ( Or use the mechanics trick of wiring them across a battery- they will glow quite a bright orangy red if good)
As an aside I have also had problems with second start of the day (when engine could be considered to be not quite stone cold) In this case glow plug indicator does NOT come on breifly, as  may be expected, and car starts after cranking. Fixed it today by fitting a new battery, It was 9 years old!
I think that the odd duff glow plug can quite seriously affect overall mpg during engine warm up. I have  noticed that MPG is also creeping up from 38.6  to 43.5 at current temp of -1C
PS also changed temp sensor, it wasnt that in my case.
Hope this helps, I think you are probably on the right track
