Engine Warning Light (Car with spanner through it)
« on: 26 May 2010, 08:39:43 »

I have a 2002 2.6 V6 CDX Omega Saloon. There have been a succession of faults which started with the crank case sensor failing which I had replaced. Then the nearside gasket leaked and loads of oil filled the spark plug 'holes' which perished the rubber spark plug caps (now replaced). After this the car always started when cold but after that had to be cranked quite a bit (about five seconds) before it started - it always did though. I suspected a fuel problem! Suddenly the car started to start fine so I thought maybe there had been something in the fuel that had gone now. I was out driving down a motorway and the engine light (the one with the car with the spanner through) came on and it went into limp home mode. This only happens after you go over approx 50-60mph. If I stop and turn off the ignition it goes off until I reach the speed again. I did the Pedal trick to see the error codes and they came up with 1700, 0500 and 0500. Just one other thing, there was a load of muck (emulsified oil) in the tubes leading to the back of the Plenum which we pulled off and blew through so they are clear but we have not actually dismantled the Plenum to see if that is blocked - should we do this? Just one last, last thing - There is sometimes a smell of petrol under the bonnet and am trying to work out if there is a pattern to when this occurs. Any help gratefully received. I'm not that technically minded so in laymens terms please! One last, last, last question - I'm due to go on a holiday to France in a couple of weeks driving down to the South. If I can't get the car sorted, will it do the car any harm if I just drive it with the light on (in limp mode). Most of the miles (apart from the Periphique - God help me) will be motorway.

Check the wiring/connection on the speed sensor rear n/s wheel (0500) and check the ATF level in the gearbox (1700). Not advisable to drive great distances in "limp" mode you`ll cook the box.

Hi Rob

Sorry, I put the wrong code in my mail - it wasn't 1700 it was 0170 which I believe is Fuel trim malfunction (Bank 1), whatever that is. Is does fit in with my problems though!
Tahnks for the info about the 0500 code though
