Assuming all is as it should be, it knocks the a/c compressor off, which in effect reverts your car to a car without air conditioning. It would still heat if required,but obviously not cool to below outside air temp.  :y
you could read the manual  ::)  ::)  ::)

When you press 'AUTO', you've turned your air con on (does it still have enough gas in there? ;))

No the ECU should speed up tick over to compensate for the compressor load.

When you press eco it switches off the compressor, which takes a load off the engine and saves fuel, but you don't have aircon.

Oh, and BTW, 1998 E39 540i = 4.4L V8 (285bhp/324lbft) so it's maybe not surprising it drank fuel.
think to get one of them :) 6 speed manual 8-)
Hhmmm... lovely!  Mind you, you can get an M5 from the same series for not much more these days!

Yep, and if it's auto you have to hold it back more on the brakes at junctions cos the extra revs make it want to "creep" quite a bit more.  If find that a pain in the neck when trying to manouver into thight spaces.

AND a price well worth paying as far as I'm concerned.
Mind you, at 40p per mile business use, fuel wise, it doesn't really cost me a penny. :y :y :y

Lucky you!!! I only get 20p per mile, just breaks even if I'm a bit light on the throttle, or on mototrways a lot. :-[

That's pants, tell them you want more or the company will need to provide transport.  You're allowed up to 40p/mile before you can be taxed, or 45p/mile if you have one or more passengers.

40p doesn't really cover the true running costs of even the most frugal of cars - not when you add up insurance, tax, mot, tyres, servicing & repairs and fuel.

Just turned 28,000 miles (with full history). Has anyone else every done the calculation to check the accuracy of the on board computer. Method to clarify calc. Fill tank to full - reset odometer & onboard computer - run to almost empty - refill tank to full - record litres to refill - record odometer mileage - divide litres by 4.5 to convert to gallons - divide mileage covered by gallons to get mpg then compare with on board computer.

hmm... 16MPG stop start town work, i.e. Manchester, changes gear before 2,000 revs in an 3.0 MV6 Auto.

16MPG = Shite!

I am tempted to try that injector cleaner stuff but I doubt it works lol
