HELP!!!!

My hubby has just drove 225 miles to pick up an NV6, the car was fine and running at around 80 but then the temperature shot up onto the red, then it went right down again. Please help as he is miles away and has now given the hire car back. Would appreciate anyone letting us know if it is a bad problem or not. Thankyou so much Zoe

Ok where abouts is he stranded?

Does the car have water in it?
Is there steam coming out from anywhere?
Does it have oil in the water reservoir?
Is the Top Hose near the battery hot, aired or cold?

There was steam (as you are looking at the car) it was on the left hand side, there is water in it, there is no oil in the resevouir (cant spell that) and the pipe is hot. Have taken it for a run, on a hill loaded and it is running at 100 temp not miles (ha) but hovers around 90, thankyou for helping

Hi there, dont know if Im doing this right, my hubby went to pick up an NV6, the car was ok but as they were driving round the temperature was at about 80, it then shot up to the red then dipped right down, has anyone any ideas what it could be. Would appreciate your help thanks Zoe

Obviously something not right with the cooling system. Coolant level would be the first thing to check, and while you're there look for any contamination with oil. If it's oily, it's not doom and gloom as head gasket failures are rare. Chances are it'll be the oil cooler which is not an expensive repair to do (150 quid or so for the parts). There is a fair bit of labour involved so worth bearing in mind if you're not handy with the spanners.

There is no oil contamination in the water at all, will it be ok to drive it home all that way.

If a mini facelift temp should sit at 95 degrees
A facelift about 90 degrees
Both will lift perhaps when going up a hill but not into the red...

Although I had it once on my own car when driving up the motorway over Saddleworth Moors. Apparently the side winds can blow the wind away from going into the radiator if that makes sense causing the temperature to rise very quickly.

what do you think it could be then as it did go into the red but is not doing now just sitting at 90 then will go to 100 but then back down to 90, not very good are we!! it has just had a new cambelt and water pump if this makes any difference, the car has been well loved and anything that needed doing has been done, just wanted to know if it was worth buying it thanks

This may sound silly but has the water system got any air locks this could cause the problem I am sure it could...

Not being any trouble Zoe :y
He doesn't need to drop the water though to get rid of an air lock.
With the car turned off fill the water system back up. Leaving the reservoir cap off start the car up. Leave it running making sure the water is topped up keep squeezing the top water hose next to the battery and the one one the drivers side just under the air filter box.
Keep doing this until the thermostat has open or the car has reached its temperature either 95 for a mini Facelift or 85-90 for a Facelift.
He will see air bubbles coming out, if you rev the car slightly too whilst squeezing the hoses this will help too :y :-*
