manual gearbox query
« on: 22 June 2010, 23:14:55 »

ok i got my 2.5td driving normal again found the tyres in 3 of them had 60psi. some people really do my head in.

ok the reason for the post.

driving home from work tonight down the motorway in 5th doing 70 floored it and it seem'd to drop a gear and go. then when i took foot off the pedal dropped back into top.

now before any silly its a auto IT AIN'T a auto it's a man.

does this happen on all omega man's or just 2.5td's or is mine a freak.

Sounds more like clutch slip to me ... hard acceleration in a high gear, clutch slips so engine note/rpm rise rapidly - sounds like its changed down - take foot off accelerator, slip ceases, engine note/rpm return to normal... sounds like its changed back up ...

ah i should have mention'd this it ain't slipping cos by cricky it accelerates along with the rev boost. and you feel it kick down is only way i can discribe it and when you lift your foot it seems to change back up and revs return to normal.

On a manual the RPM and road speed have a fixed relationship in a given gear -  unless the clutch is slipping. Nothing else can cause what you describe.

well this is what i have know from all other man's.

i shall do a video tomorrow cos the rev's jump up then rise smooth, and the speed goes up through the roof on it.

it's like on a auto dropping the OD off.

but the speed increase's with the rev's. and it's only when putting foot the extra lil bit like on a auto kick down that it does it. if i put my foot down to just above the floor it accelerates normally.

This is a longshoot but one thing can possibly cause this. EML light on (doesn't have to be visible) for a split second and car goes into limp mode when you lift your foot up.
Can't see the clutch being the problem when the throttle is released and this occurs.
Not an expert but every mechanical law says slipping will occur under heavy pressure or reving and not when reving starts to drop.
Was the gearbox on the car ever changed?

well that was what i was wondering if it was a auto once in its life and has something left over that does something.

no offence guys i know a slipping clutch, when it slips you don't then accelerate.

i'm sure the video will clear up that it's not the clutch.

Another possibility maybe and is related to clutch.
Clutch release bearing?

but no part of the clutch is slipping. to the best of my knoweldge

it behaves just like a auto that kick's down.

ok i have i (think) worked it out.

i'm right it's nothing to do with the clutch at all as i said.

how ever and this is a lil guess work till i can strip it and see but. i think it is a weak chain tensioner when giving it some it put extra strain on it and moved it and advanced the timing making it seem as if it was kicking it down.

what made me think of this i hear you all asking. well on my way to work doing 70 ;) i heard what sounded like a chain slapping about and the engine cut and wouldn't restart.

aa came out to recover me he had a lil look and said it is def something to do with the chain. till i strip it i don't know if it is as i think and the tensioner or if it's the chain or if it's seized or if it's a pig in there but it kinda makes sense what i said.

will start another thread if i can't find the info, on if the engine is non interfearance or not.
