worrying noise when cold
« on: 07 August 2010, 11:20:50 »

this week, the beloved , but much abused miggy has started making a worrying noise....

when cold, it's "knocking" once per revolution.....   or maybe less.... actually...

my intuition , and gut tell me that it could be

A) exhaust manifold related, at one end?  so one cylinder   is  making  a racket...

B) something far more worrying and expensive, maybe a dry oil feed to the top of the driver side V?   (not low on oil or pressure)

C) even worse, a big end bearing?  (although i think the noise is coming from top  side of the drivers side Vee , so this seems unlikely)

it's very obvious when cold, and gets worse under load (acceleration)

and then it calms done as it warms up....

the exhaust does sound a little throatier than i think it ought to.... even when warm.... and was only fitted at the beginning of the year...

Jaimeeeeeee   you planning on visiting the in-laws this weekend???   wanna put an expeirenced ear to it while it's cold?

buy you a pint over the road?

i have to drive to Exeter on Monday morning....   if i need to hire , beg , borrow, or buy another car, i probably need to know before it dies halfway down the M5

(i've only got back from working away (in a hired van) for a few days at 5 this morning... so be gentle with me.... )

Dry lifter - a sort of load ticking noise.

Exhaust manifold - softer ticking noise

Split EGR pipe - a much louder, almost mechanical, clatter

Tied up today with another OOFer, and tomorrow with family :(

Can you record and post noise?

once it's fully up to temperature, the noise is pretty much, or completely, gone.... or at least, it's not sounding like a definite separate noise.....

and i've not worked it out, but it's either once per rev or , possibly less, and if less, i think maybe once every other rev??     , the noise is the sort of thing i'd expect to hear a lot of if say one removed the exhaust from the manifold onwards,  or even removed the manifold....

i guess i could try using the mobile to record the sound.....     (yes, i COULD go out there with the laptop , and an audio interface and some decent mic's   but that's not really a great idea in the on/off drizzle.....  )

got to wait for it to cool down first, as i not long got home from dropping of the hire van....

what's the prognosis with the assorted possibilities?

Blowing manifold or rattly lifter will both be every other crank rotation.

Sounds like the exhaust manifold gasket to me. Lifters wouldn't worsen under load.

.. and long time no see, Max, how's it going?

I don't know! ::) He only comes here when he's got a broken Omega now. :P

either that or that's another noise.... and another problem....

if i could just get a month or so ahead of my overheads, i'd probably buy a newer miggy...   tried to in January, but there was only one for sale, and it was a front ended repair that was poorly done....  (no headlight washers on a facelift elite.....  )

cursed like anything when Josh put that black 3.2 up a week or two back....  had i the money i;d have snapped his hand off for it....

my baby is rapidly approaching her 150K birthday....  poor old thing....

she's running a bit lumpy at idle , and feeling a little sluggish as well.

i'm on here this morning instead of sleeping after doing 3 20+ hour days in a row...

example, on site yesterday morning , at 7 am.... after 5 hours kip from the day before, (during which i drove a diseasal asthmatic transit from here to Anglesey, , then down to exeter , and then did 8 hours on site...    , before crashing out in nearest hotel...  )   got home and had shower this morning at 5 am...  got 4 hour kip, got up unloaded the van, filled it up and took it back to the hire company...  , got home, put laundry on, emptied and reloaded the dishwasher, then got on here....     really, i have no life do i....

lifters / oil related? turning will slosh over your oil and if its low that can cause low pressure momentarily. I Assume a decent oil change won't / hasn't fixed it as thats where I would start
