Omega immobiliser system - cat1 / cat2 or other?
« on: 17 March 2008, 11:06:30 »

Hi
Just renewing my insurance and never did understand this question re alarms on confused.com. It asks if it is a standard fit CAT1 or standard fit CAT2. Anyone know?
(mines an Omega Elite estate, facelift)

Any vehicle sold in the UK after 1997 had to have a Cat2 fitted by law, and the upgrade to Cat 1 was offered as an optional upgrade.

Difficult to comment on your vehicle without a few more specifics, although I`m sure someone else will be along with some Omega info.

From what I can tell, the Omega system is compliant with cat 1 if it includes the alarm (assuming the power sounder is working!) or cat 2 if it's just an immobiliser. Whether it's got Thatcham approval is another matter but it's functionally equivalent:

Cat 1:
    *   Alarm
      Perimeter detection
      Ignition detection
      Passenger compartment movement detection
      Inclination detection (Motorcycle only)
      Audible warning with battery back-up power supply
    * Immobiliser
      Passively set
      Isolates a minimum of two operating circuits or systems, or a minimum of one operationally relevant vehicle control unit with coded intervention

Cat 2:

    *   Immobiliser
      Passively set
      Isolates a minimum of two operating circuits or systems, or a minimum of one operationally relevant vehicle control unit with coded intervention

Check out http://www.thatcham.org for more details.

Thanks Kevin and Dave for rapid responses.

From Kevins response I think I must be Cat 2 as I have everything in the CAT 1 list other than 'Perimiter Detection' (as far as I know!)

Perimeter detection is just switches on the doors, boot and bonnet, IIRC, so a factory alarm has them.

Yes, but this also must be from a Thatcham approved system and fitted in accordance with the MIRRC guidelines by an approved and certified fitter - what is listed is some of the features of an alarm, not what makes it Thatcham approved.

The Omega alarm/immobiliser i recognised by Thatcham as meeting the Cat 1/2 requirements.

But, your insurer will already know this and will be applying the discount anyway.
