Title: Bike Insurance renewal time
Post by: tunnie on 21 March 2012, 15:22:45
Completely forgot it was due, got a txt to say it was due in 7 days. Phoned up, got price of £365 for year, I'm not ad old fart like some, so I still have big prices  :(

I'm 27, the bike is a 2006 BMW GS, kept at my parents in Northamptonshire in a garage. Usual legal cover, 5k miles, green card & pillion.

I'm about to do the usual ring around, but any thoughts/ suggestions?

Should add its only 3 years NCB, as I passed my bike test in 2009

Okay, so this may seem daft to say... (but what the hell I'll say it anyhow ::) ;D)

Are you a member of any BMW riders club, have an Advanced Riders certificate, whereby you can get a discount, or tried some specialist bike insurance companies to see if you can get a better deal than the one you have?

Have you looked on the quote to see if the insurance company has added any extras that you didn't ask for as a default? - Example European breakdown cover, key loss / replacement cover that you could contact then and ask if it would be cheaper if you take off some of the added extras that you won't need?

Well it is only just an idea anyhow ;)

I'm staggered, I was asked about value of the bike. I'd not looked in ages, I paid just over £6k for in 2009.

Checking Autotrader:

http://www2.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/bikes/bmw/r1200/postcode/tw89de/radius/1501/keywords/2006/sort/priceasc/page/2 (http://www2.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/bikes/bmw/r1200/postcode/tw89de/radius/1501/keywords/2006/sort/priceasc/page/2)

They are still going for same money, hardly fallen in value at-all  :o :o

Thanks :)

I'm not a member of any club, but i do pay for BMW warranty, its a sort of insurance. Basically if any non-service part fails, its replaced free, parts & labour. Things like final drive, electrical stuff, ect all covered, plus I get Europe wide breakdown with that.

Current insurance gets key cover too.

Tried Carol Nash, do get AA cover including Euroland, but they want £440 :(

Trouble is that any form of Car/bike/van insurance these days is a complete gamble, there is no logic to it all, and we the owners of such vehicle that do bother to abide by the law will always get stitched up good and proper :-\

I'll give you an example of what I had regarding my insurance for my Mig.  Mature driver with over 25yrs driving experiance (not all in one go though ;D) full NCD over 20yrs, yet for a 2.2 sport spec they wanted to charge me around the £500 TPFT mark.
Just for fun I put the details in to see what it would come out at for a BMW 3L worth 15k, everything else the same and it came back around £480 Fully Comp ??? :o ??? - Work that one out ::)

Have you tried these by any chance?

Ohh... Forgot to say, if you only do limited amount of miles on your bike, maybe worth going for a 'limited mileage policy' ;)

I know, I went from a Yamaha 660cc, worth £2k, to a £6k BMW, the insurance price was the same  :o

Will give them a ring  :y

Called them, would only give a quote based on my place of residence postcode, not where the bike is kept. As I live in London and the bike is based in Northants, makes for a big difference!

Thanks though, always worth ringing around :)

I'd always wondered how much bike insurance is for newer, younger riders - the only costs I'd ever seen were from old farts more experienced riders.

Interesting - not as cheap as I thought it'd be! Though I suppose it's a big bike for 'only' three years experience?

Yes, thats the problem I think. It appears cc does not make much of a difference, think type would be, if I went to a 1200 sports would be different to a 1200 tourer.

So far Carol Nash only one close, BMW own insurance wanted £700  :o

I'm fairly happy with £360, given only been riding 3 years with quite an expensive and desirable bike, I'll pay it off in one go.

I know the angry fat man's policy is not even into 3 figures. But then again he is old..... and fat  ;D

Try MCE. I've got a 57 plate Sprint ST 1050. Two years no claims. 500 excess. 6000 per a year. 216 quid fully comp.

I use AQuote, the premium has always been reasonable and they were excellent when I had a prang!  :y

MCE - Rang them, gave 'em a bunch of details, transferred me, to someone at other company who started asking same ones again? Point I asked? Pour line so hung up.

Hastings Direct - Quite a lot more, looking at £550

Going to try Bennetts....

As posted recently - it is really getting below the headline rates these online insurers quote.

You take your bike abroad I think - does your insurance cover this and for how many days, is your NCB protexted, legal cover etc. Make sure you compare like with like.

I have just renewed with Admiral Multicar . I thought I had found good rates elsewhere but all the extras meant there was little difference and some quite bad reports about claims handling from the cheaper quotes.

I pay more to insure my omega than I do my R1.....figure that one out :o :o

I've not taken it abroad yet, but I'd like to. All quotes so far have included green card cover, for up to 90 days at a time.

Decided to accept the renewal, also discovered I get NCB protection as well, they also dropped it another £5.

Also I asked for a call back at 6:30, they called me bang on this time.

No complaints really, no charge for paying in full. Never had any issues with Express Insurance, they are a broker who are putting me with MarkerStudy for the second time.

My BIL is 52 and has an  R1200 - he pays £200 pa for insurance - do not think he has any NCB as just bought the bike and did not have one before

Think being 52 is key there!

Just renewed with same company as last year, didn't even bother ringing around...  ...just shy of £55 fully comp, no breakdown (have that elsewhere). There is a time limit on Europe though, 90 days rings a bell, but not really interested.

I've been well pleased with Swinton (Bikes) over the last four years. Each renewal has been cheaper than the previous.

I would NEVER deal with Swinton on principle. I got a quote from them once, and the nuisance phone calls from them have never stopped since. >:(

Whatever you do, don't tell them your phone number, or arrange it on a freebie PAYG SIM and then bin it.

Well with Swinton, they just annoyed me. Went through "MCE" giving details, which Swinton then asked again for. But she kept asking me to repeat things I'd said very clearly.

Out of all the ones I tried, none of them came near. Cheapest one with another company was £80 more  :o

Obviously I can only speak from personal experience but I get a reminder phone call about a month before my policy expires advising what the next years premium will be, and then they ask if I want them to call again in a week after I've mulled it over/looked around to renew the policy if I'm happy with the deal, and that's it for the next year.  :y
