Title: Ramps.
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 13 June 2012, 10:53:01
How do I get my MV6 up a set of standard ramps?.....when the overhang both front and rear stops me. :-\

Do I need ramps with a more gentle incline?.

AA has extensions.

Or I have a 3 ton jack that is man enough to lift the car high enough, so ramps can be place under.

I'm intrigued.....How do they work?

put some bricks or timber in front, drive up onto them first to raise the car slightly. should give you enough clearance for ramps.

remember to put them back when you bring the car back off !

a ramp onto the ramp basically. I guess they also help stop the ramp sliding away as the wheel hits them.

Thanks Andy. I suppose  the design of these ramps dates back to a time when the average car didn't sit as low as they do today. I'll wager an old Mini, Moggy or Marina would drive straight on.

Probably, but my extentions dates back to when I wanted to drive my Senator up my ramps ...... same problem, the lower edge of the bumper hit the ramp way before the wheel even looked at the ramp.  :y :y
Her Smart will drive straight up the ramps because the wheels sit at each corner, but I still use the extentions because it gives a lower angle of attack & the ramps are less likely to get pushed forward as you drive up.  :y

Tried the ramps with Mrs Opti's 53 plate Corsa. Rear......No problems. Front.......No chance.

I use bits of 6" X 3" timber resting on the second or third rung up.  :o  I hang my ramps on the garage wall when not in use and store the timber with them. I'm not condoning this as good practice though as the second or third rung has a serious bow in it now.  ::)  Andy's mod is the safer method.  :y

Thats not a bad price for a set of ramps plus extensions.

The extensions dont need to be overly wide, they are only driven over as a transition from ground to ramp top.

They are not much wider than my bits of wood.   :D My ramps are the same as Andy's (over thirty years old) and as I've already said, my bits of wood have bent the spars, so the width does matter.
Mind you, I do have a bad habit of parking halfway up the ramps to do low down jobs.  ::)  ;D ;D
If I catch the ramps wrong on my block paving, it's like having a pair of ski's on the front of the car.  ;D ;D

I bet the ramps I have are even older, They were my Dad's he bought them when I was a kid but despite the odd rub down and respray they keep going.
Must get TG to knock up some of those extensions with the stick set.

stopping this is easy and cheap
cut a strip of carpet about 3 feet long and attach it to the lower rung of the ramp, either with nuts and bolts and big washers or some nice thick cable ties.
the car drives over the carpet so the ramp dosnt slip :y

never had this problem, just go's up on ramps. as long as on level road.

Most ramps I've seen/used are too steep for the Omega front bumpers, then again I'm used to facelifts which have bigger bumpers anyway. Always have to use a block of wood to reduce the incline so it misses the bumper

you must've scraped the bottom of your bumper.  ???

have about 3mm gap from bumper to ramp. bottom bit is rubber on bumper.

They must be a more shallow angle than most then.  :y

Never seen ramps that are Omega-friendly yet! Last time this thread came up (old site) I posted pics of my wooden ones made for my Mk 1 Astra (Ramps still in use, ashtray well rotted away).
