Not right. Not right at all.
Mind you, it's not all MacDonald's fault - perhaps it is more indicative of a spineless Olympic Committee that give into these contractual demands. And what about that mega restaurant that will be bulldozed after the Paralympic Games? Now we have disposable restaurants? What an absolute waste. >:(

Yes, a fine display of corporatism at its best, and what a place for it to flourish and prosper - the 'Great' Britain of incapable government, lax regulation, greed and plain banditry we now are required to accept as being the norm in this supposedly mature democracy.
Not that alleged wholesomeness of the McDonald’s product line (or those of any of the other such providers) concerns me as not one gram of their offerings has ever passed over my lips – and never will.
-
I think the main point here is being missed .... McDonalds - like them or not - are a successful company because they invest in the right things for them ... Olympic Committee - like the MOD - are rank amateurs.
What do I mean ??
McDonalds will have paid highly skilled, expert, contract writing lawyers to draw up and vet the contracts .. which they now, quite legitimately, are insisting are obeyed.
LOGOC probably got a work experience lass to type up the contract in between doing the photocopying, as it was the cheaper option.
In 38 years of RAF service I saw this a thousand times ... professional contract lawyers will beat a well intentioned but untrained "you can do that" person every day.
So lets not blame MuckyDs for insisting that they get what the bits of paper say they paid for ... blame LOGOC for not doing the job properly in the first place.
And it has nowt to do with the government/coalition/BMP/Sun/Mail/my granny/anyone else .... it is purely LOGOC at fault.
-
MuckDonalds.. Restaurant? Selling chips? Some mistake here, I think.
Some sort of Re-constituted Smash swill cooked in lard, perhaps, but chips they aren't. ::)
-
And lets not forget that McCardboard probably paid a lot of money, more than the individual stalls, and probably agreed some WiFi points etc.
Solution is easy, if you want chips, buy a fiskcake/banger and through it away. Simples.
(Sorry if I have wrong end of stick, I refuse point blank to log on to Peado Today's website)

Aah yes - what a wonderful advertisement to the spectators following such an ‘important’ event where those who seek to be champions through dedicated training, determination - and a wholesome diet bringing about a state of peak fitness - hope to compete, (taken from that Fail piece).
Commercial partners Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Cadbury, Nature Valley and Heineken will be the only branded products sold at the games.
It now seems that those commercial concerns able to stump-up sufficient funds are afforded the ability to call the shots in any way they feel appropriate.
Should this really be the way forward, then Christ help us. Corporatism will not only be running the country but such groups will be doing it with one aim and one aim only in mind, the maintenance and enhancement of the bottom line - irrespective of the eventual cost to those who will suffer as a result of such single minded intent .
-
I do find some of the comments here, and in the press, rather odd .. TBH.
When the games were first proposed, the press and many other commentators went to great lengths to insist that the organising committee (LOGOC) should do as much s they could to obtain sponsorship to reduce the costs to the UK PLC.
The LOGOC did just that, and signed contracts with the companies listed, and took the money .. great big lumps of it ....
Those companies are now, quite simply, asking that those contracts be complied with, and they are getting the blame ???
The LOGOC are the ones to blame for signing contracts they, in all probability, did not read or understand.
Why is ensuring a written contract is fulfilled suddenly such a bad thing ??? IMHO there should be more enforcement of contracts in ALL walks of life, as it might then force people to actually take responsibility for their actions.

It's a crazy world. Run by big business with neither ethics or morals. :-\
So here we have the 2012 London Olympics games.......a celebration of health, fitness and vitality.
Is it really such a good idea to use sponsors, who must take at least part of the responsibility, for the poor health of the nation?.
Junk food has a direct link with the growing obesity problem we have in this country......not to mention diabetes. Exactly what message are we sending out to our children?..........Eat more processed crap, then wash it down with fizzy, sugary water that will rot your teeth.
Government ministers cower before the "all powerful" food industry and it's lobbyists. :( :(

Aah, this thread is shaping up nicely. :y
The first two of seven principles lifted from the ‘Fundamental Principles of Olympism’ (sic)
1. Olympism (sic) is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism (sic) seeks to create a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example, social responsibility and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles.
2. The goal of Olympism (sic) is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.
So far, this seems to be all very laudable.
From the Mission and Role of the IOC – two of sixteen statements;
9. to encourage and support measures protecting the health of athletes;
10. to oppose any political or commercial abuse of sport and athletes;
It could be said in the light of the foregoing that these lofty goals appear to stumble very early in the race as those funding the event by way of sponsorship – in this case McDonalds – seem to have an inordinate level of influence in how people behave within the environs of the Olympic village.
Corporatism has no place in proceedings where people congregate to display all that is supposed to shine within the human spirit.
In my view the Olympic Games are about human endeavour – not the opportunity for the cynical corporate sector to make money, especially by means of such restrictive practices.
I'm only saying though - not trying to give anybody hypertension. :-* :-*

No one is forced to eat in these places, all adults have a choice. The adults who indulge their children regularly, in order to stuff their own fat faces? Well.....that's a sign of the times we live in, and you can hardly blame Macdonalds.
As for the sponsorship question, no 'healthy food' companies could afford it. So, Olympics+Macdonalds or no olympics?
I say this time and time again, I will look after my family and make sure I point them in the right direction. It's up to others to make their own decisions.

Sadly, you may be correct, Steve. :( :(
I just wish that the government wasn't so shit scared of the big boys in the food industry. Quite often very unhealthy food is packaged and promoted as healthy, and allowed to do so by the government.

I don't see a problem with any caterers (or any other business) supporting what is a very costly exercise these days. After all, they do need to invest in equipment/staff and so on. What is wrong, as Den has pointed out with his usual savvy postings, is that this is not market capitalism, where people set up shop to cater, and compete, for the masses. This is corporatism whereby one company is able, in its own sector (like Visa) to use its power to push out the competition. Since competition is the mainstay of capitalism, this isn't capitalism. Incidentally, in a socialist world we would have a state catering company...who wouldn't have any competition either! ;)

what you call "corporatism" is the evolved and current state of capitalism Nickbat ;)

what you call "corporatism" is the evolved and current state of capitalism Nickbat ;)
It needn't be, Cem. Corporatism arises when the State becomes too entwined with the biggest players, such that national policy decisions are taken that favour certain individuals and their empires. True capitalists hate corporatism. It's not natural and can be reversed at any time, but only when we get honest politicians. ;)

I can see it odd that junk food companies are sponsering the games .... but it is not the responsibililty of McD, Cadbury or whoever to ensure a healthly nation. It's also not the responsibility of the govt. Each and every adult makes their choices in life. If that choice is to eat at fast food chain, so be it. But deal with whatever consequences their are.
There simply just is too much blaming in our culture today - the govt, large companies, the man across the road......whoever.
The nation in poor health? If X percentage of people are obese for instance, the responsibility lies with the X percentage that are obese.
A company has a product or service to sell. Each person makes a choice whether to buy it

sorry OO MV6.. but cant agree..
being adult dont make you conscious about nutrition.. only education can make you conscious.. most of those adults understand and wake up to real life after having health problems and after its too late.. I dont remember any school who teaches what to eat.. how to cook etc..
and besides most communities are driven by ads.. and its a prooven fact that ads effect peoples decision mechanisms..

See your point Cem...but don't agree.
As an adult, you can make a conscious decision to get yourself informed. Furthermore, there is so much (easily accessible) info these days - moreso than ever before - that there is no excuse really. In essence, as I said I see your point, but you are now blaming education.
Certainly ads play a very large part in coscious and sub-consious decisions making, but again, slow down, take a moment for yourself, think, and and make very conscious decisions.
I so admit I don't always practice what I preach ;)

I so admit I don't always practice what I preach ;)
problem is , this info available mostly came with internet.. and its too late for most of us, heavy weight champions ;D
and although I am not an expert, being adult dont make you decide always consciously.. lots of proof around imo.. :(

to add some complexity to this discussion , taste is always the preference of humankind over health.. ::)

Does this not amount to accepting a free for all V6?
Given the immense power of the body corporate, through targeted advertising and market saturation – in this case McDonalds – there must be some level of responsibility shown in respect of the wholesome nature of their products and how this impinges on the well-being of those who choose to consume this type of food.
It would seem that the main purpose of those in this arena of business activity has been to create an almost total level of dependence on not only the convenience factor offered by such products, but also by way of the culinary composition of them in order to achieve the maximum amount of sales possible - irrespective of any negative effects on the health of those people foolish enough to consume this kind of food in any regular or excessive way.
Government cannot evade responsibility by blindly allowing any business concern to produce and sell products which – in the case of ‘fast food’ – has demonstrated not only to have had a detrimental physical effect on many of those who consume regular amounts of it but also an addictive effect as well.
With obesity in many people within this country at an all time high and with Type 2 diabetes and heart disease rapidly becoming a serious cause for concern, the government must act to ensure that such corporate concerns behave in a responsible fashion and ensure that their products do not contribute in any detrimental way to this ever increasing problem.
Of course personal responsibility plays a very large part in how people decide to live their lives but it seems that the way these corporate bodies operate, in how they saturate the market with outlets selling their products, in how they tap into the popular culture by making their products apparently indispensable to modern day living, they seem to be more intent in achieving market domination and increased profits than being concerned on just how detrimental their products can be to those people foolish enough to buy into the hype.
Rampant corporatism is a bad thing because the bottom line is the prime reason for being – the consequences to those caught up in the quest to get to that all important point would seem to be a distant concern to say the least.

DD - you made some very valid comments there and I do agree with you. Of course there needs to be rules and controls. And no, I am not implying a free for all at all. What I maybe did not make clear enough previously is once the said rules, controls are there, it also sends a subliminal message that Joe Bloggs can stop thinking for himself - and when thngs go wrong, blame the govt, large corporations, or whoever else.
Also, as you point out, the large corporations market their goods in such a way, saturate the market in the way they do and the message is that these items are essential to life. Life changes rapidly but many people don't ever question it.
Take for example, keeping with the fast food idea, coffee bars. In towns and cities everywhere commuters are walking down a street with a cardboard cup in their hand. Does anyone think, hey why don't I get up 10 minutes earlier and sit peacefully with a coffee like people did not so many years ago.
Just observing that life can take you over if you don't think about making decisions for yourself.
And refering back to the many comments about not eating this type of food. Don't like it , don't go. Cem mentioned a lack of knowledge in the past on the part of the general public concerning the damage that it can cause to your health. True. In the past. But now we know. So now we CAN make informed decisions

Best bit of a macker slackers meal is the gherkins. Only part that's recognisable as food IMHO.
