Title: iPhone 5 Next Week 12th September Wednesday...
Post by: OmegaAnglesey on 05 September 2012, 17:57:27
Firstly, I know allot of you on here dont participially like apple products ie gayPhone crApple 4Shit etc..  :-X ;D
Either way i'm probably what you'd call a fan-boy of the iPhone at least not so keen on iPads, Laptops etc..
So I'm rather excited by the news of the confirmed date the iPhone 5 or whatever it will be called will be unveiled  :D
The rumours point to the iPhone 5 to be getting a 4" display which would be gr8 but not so good for your current 4/4S attachments
and the possibility for the charger to be different.. either way cant wait... Anyone else interested  :P ::) ;D

Oh dear, the crApple fanboys will be like safari park chimps ;D

Being only half gay, I'll keep my 3GS a bit longer :P.

Sadly, when it comes to replace it, its likely to be another crApple until Android sort their act out  :'(. Winblows, Gooseberry and Open webOS I think will not be here in a year or 2.

Hmm. What chance does the new Nokia have, then?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-19491421 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-19491421)

It features a 4.5" screen and Windows 8, but sadly owning a Nokia is not cool these days...whereas owning anything Apple is, apparently. ::) ::)

Similar to owning a Vauxhall Omega, in its production days, which was very uncool, whereas owning a BMW was ultra cool (These days read Audi rather than BMW).

Either way brand image often trumps product quality.  :(

I agree. The odd comment is fine when used in conjunction with punctuation, correct use of case etc. - All IMHO of course ............

TBH Tunnie, I didn't even notice it. Which is unusual for me ;)

I'm looking forward to the release... I may end up with a 5 when I replace mine in a couple of months but more likely that I'll take advantage of the reduced cost of the 4S ;)

Traditionally, the older ones are not reduced, just withdrawn, and a 'low spec' (usually 8Gb) one released at around 20% cheaper than the lowest cost new one.

Cost is in it too, with Microsoft, a fee has to be paid by the manufacture to Microsoft. It bumps up the cost, with Apple they effectively give away iOS for free!

Microsoft should asset strip Nokia & brand their own market phones for sale, if they want to do anything in the market. But that's unlikely as Microsoft is a software company.

It's going to be Google vs Apple for some time yet!

Really don't want to start a heated debate, esp for a silly slip/mistake, so I expect this to be the last word on the subject on this thread...

Not sure what you mean buddy i rarely send more than 2-5 texts a year ?
Text speak - the shortened words, usually using numbers as 'sounds like' words, which in the days of proper keyboards and included text bundles, no longer have a place in this world.

There are perfectly good reasons, both technical and for readability (not just by humans ;)), why our rules ban it.

Ta :)

First, MS cannot asset strip a company they do not own. Yet. Although I wonder if MS are more likely to buy Gooseberry take on RIM's debts...

Secondly, MS makes more from every Android and iOS sale that they do from WinMo sales  :-X

There is room for 2 good smartphone OSes. Currently, crApple have the loyalty, if not necessarily the best product, so only Android is for the taking. And there are a few contenders more than happy to knock Android off.

You'd have to not have all your dogs on one lead to buy HTC. Useless pieces of junk, showing how 'spec' marketing doesn't mean the best device.  SIII is, give or take, similar to gayPhone pricing.

I am not a loyal crApple user. I think crApple are a nasty company, with nasty business practices. But then I hold Google in similar regard, with even nastier practices ::). But until someone releases a reasonable email client from Google's mobile OS, I'm forced to have a crApple phone.

Considering RIM's hardware is rubbish + huge debts, can't see them going that route. All they had was Enterprise Server

It's lightness is achieved by using cheap plastics, the back plate is ultra slim. The build is still way better than a Blackberry though  :)

I jumped into the Samsung Galaxy S3 and so far i can say i havent noticed any "bugs".
The phone in my opinion is far better and will remain far better than even the iphone 5

Just my opinion though  ::)

All they had was Enterprise Server
Which could easily be integrated into Exchange Server, along with BBM (linking into Lync), creating a very integrated enterprise mobile messaging system.  Whether or not they choose to underpin Gooseberry's OS with WinMo, or simply integrate Gooseberry's unique capabilities onto WinMo, it does make a better buy that Nokia. But it will wait until either is a token cost ;)

As the iPhone 5 has not been seen by anyone yet, thats clearly an invalid comment. The gayPhone 5 may be world changing, for all we know. Doubt it though.

"Better" is not really valid. For me, my old 3GS is "better" than an SIII, as there is no decent email client available for the latter.

Indeed... And if it is badly integrated it will mean I won't go for a 5 ;) I want something usable and easy to hold with one hand :)

I know where my vote is regards screens.

A lot of IPhone 5 info seems vague but just found this.

Screen
iPhone 5 - 4in IPS, 1,136 x 640 resolution
Samsung Galaxy S3 - 4.8in Super AMOLED, 1,280 x 720 resolution

Am happy with my Galaxy S2

Type    Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
Size    480 x 800 pixels, 4.3 inches (~217 ppi pixel density)
Multitouch    Yes
Protection    Corning Gorilla Glass
    - TouchWiz UI v4.0

But if tempted to upgrade my 2 choices are below.  :y

Samsung Galaxy S3

Type    Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
Size    720 x 1280 pixels, 4.8 inches (~306 ppi pixel density)
Multitouch    Yes
Protection    Corning Gorilla Glass 2
    - TouchWiz UI

or the Galaxy Note

Type    Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
Size    800 x 1280 pixels, 5.3 inches (~285 ppi pixel density)
Multitouch    Yes
Protection    Corning Gorilla Glass
    - TouchWiz UI v4.0

I have an Android tablet that I barely use because I found I just couldn't get on with it somehow.. I guess it's a case of "what you know" - so even though the screen might not be quite so good (better resolution than my eyes, though! ;D) I'll probably go iPhone again..

Nokia are idiots. They had the whole Mraket in their hands and they blew it.
Why? Because they thought they couldn't be touched, and with no competition, at the time, thought it was ok to dump half arsed, incomplete, rubbish operating systems on their customers and have them develop out the million bugs for them. The only time a phone was usable was just before the next phone was released which instantly halted development, in favour of the new model.

Apple and others that followed, walked in, did a less advanced job, but it worked. No crashing. Barely any bugs. To this day crApple can't compete with, for one example, the blutooth functionality Nokia had 15 years ago. But what good is that if your Nokia crashes half way through every other time it's used.

IMO crApple are the equivalent of BMW. So you can imagine the pain I went though with Nokias last disaster the n900 which was the alleged replacement for the n95, that made me bin Nokia for the "Enemy".

The original IPhone was not even close to a smart phone by Nokia standards. Still isn't really. But the iPhone won't loose your data, your posts, texts and apps into thin air under normal basic use.

How I never smashed that n900 into a million pieces i will never know. And I'd happily own another Symbian device, IF it's proved to work reliably. But there is zero chance of that. Zero! IMO. :)

With Symbian, you could set an alarm then power the phone off. iPhones still cannot do that!

Symbian also was not built for touch screen & it shows!

So you can imagine the pain I went though with Nokias last disaster the n900 which was the alleged replacement for the n95, that made me bin Nokia for the "Enemy".

touch screens only advantage is the bigger screen area, as theres no keys. And yes I guess that's why nokia came with Maemo os for touch screens?

Nokia not cool eh, I reckon the next fad might be to run an old brick style phone, ie to be very retro. My son (18)had to have an iphone3, as expected broke very easily, then he bought a second hand blackberry that lasted about 3 months. He is now currently using my old Nokia 6210 Navigator.

So do we think we may see a revolt by the younger generation ? and a move away from chimping, I mean lets face it they hardly look cool while chimping.

Whats has REALLY shocked me, is how much I like it, andhow it beats my aging android hands down.
I am now considering one myself, and thats shocked me even more!

I was never that interested in having the latest handset but having switched from a Nokia E71 to iPhone I can't see me ever wanting to go away from it. I've had a few plays with Android handsets and they just don't seem to work the way I want. I'm sure I could get used to it but why compromise and move away from something I've now got working how I like. The only complaint I have about my iPhone 4 is that it can be a bit slow with some of the work related apps I run in the background (like GPS Tracking) but as a general rule it just works. It's only my handset that has issues, possibly because it's 2 years old and heavily used with no storage space left on it at all. The lads handsets are only 8Gb versions and seem to be reliable enough :y

I'll see what sort of deal I can bully out of O2 when the time comes for me to change mine (and SWMBO's) and then decide whether I go for the 5 or the 4S :y

If the 5 is bigger than the 4 as rumoured, it's not for me. Although we don't know the functions yet.
There was talk of a mini iphone. Which might sway me. We'll see. :-\

Galaxy SIII is way too big for me. The Nokias release yesterday, from the pics, look too big.

I wouldn't want to go any bigger than my current gayPhone (3GS).  Actually, other than its well over 2.5yrs old, big chunk missing from screen, the only thing extra I want from it is a bit more speed (iOS 5 is slow on a 3GS).

But until someone can release a usable email client on a usable alternative OS, I'm stuck.

Mrs TB got hers before me, and I wanted to hate it. Its crApple, and its very gay.

But the bloody thing just worked. Annoyingly so. Ultra stable, very usable, and way better for my needs than anything else.

So a bought a gay Gold car with a brown turd for a steering wheel, turned gay, and got one myself.

If you want a phone predominantly, don't buy an iPhone, the phone as an application is crap IMO. Although it works obviously.

Smartphones stopped being just phones a good 15 years ago, if not more. A multimedia device you might say...? :)

People keep mentioning the stable word......cant say I have had to re-boot any of the competitor options for a long time in fact the last one I did was the wifes older symbian based one.

For me the iphone is crap at calls and to pricey plus its not to rugged hence not an option.  :y

Yes i tend agree Den, it's what turns my stomach a bit about Apple. Over the top enfasis on the greatness, even for Americans surely?

Although as said before, they know how to promote a product. If Nokia had a fraction of the same approach they wouldn't be in the shite they are in now, in fact Apple wouldn't be as predominant as they are now. I can see Jobs looking at the smartphone market In the early days and rubbing his hands the glee. Eeeeeasy pickings.

The iPhone is not crap at making calls btw, it has a crap phone application, specifically, the number keys disappearing onto another page when the call starts, so toggling back and forth between, say, selecting speaker phone, and selecting number keys when selecting number options on automated systems. Just strikes me as a pita and an unnecessary complication, but probably to do with being a touchscreen device maybe? I haven't given it much thought as to why except that it's irritating IMO.

Oh, and I ove the clumsy ninja too. ;D

Yup, like most smartphones, but probably worse of the lot. Nothing will beat likes of 6310i

Absolutely

Its the longest I've had a smartphone, most others have not lasted a year. So not sure I can agree with that. Or the comment that its not far more stable than others - although others have come a long way in the last 2 or 3 years.

my 3gs copes well I just haven't filled it up with rubbish apps I never use, the main reason I changed to an iPhone was because id had enough of blackberry as it kept white screening ;D
which put me off. also swmbo had the iphone4 and I was always sneaking ago on it :)

best phone I've ever owned was a Nokia e65 god if ever ther was a phone that could take some abuse that was it thrown, dropped, washing machine it would always keep working. the only reason I changed was I felt Nokia was lagging behind.

plus iPhone has football manager 2012 on it and at the time android didnt ;D

Apple are currently trying to grab the 3GS users onto a 5 ;)

Trouble is there not rugged, if you see the hell my phone goes through, the drops bashes cracks etc it, the one I had at work (3GS) had a cracked screen within 4 weeks just by catching it on the desk

The screens can crack quite easily, more so on iPhones because the screen is glass. Most others are plastic, mines developed a screen colour issue. I think a re-format would fix it, but its a good excuse to try and get a 5!  :D

Certainly not my experience of my 3GS, nearly 3yrs old. Granted, its got a chunk gouged out of the screen (but not cracked), and a cracked case, but if you'd seen the abuse it had suffered - dropped, thrown, sat on, watered, baked, squashed and generally misused  :-[

No idea what to replace it with, or even which Smartphones will be around in a year. Despite the lacklustre iPhone 5 announcement, I think Apple is safe for the next generation. Obviously, RIM and Nokia's legacy systems are dead, and HP/Palm don't have hardware to go with the relaunched webOS. Windows or Android though? Or both? Many supposed 'experts' are saying Android looks the most dicey. Windows has certain advantages with WinRT, but its hard to see them getting a good foothold in the marketplace currently...

...though does it matter nowadays, as long as the phone is stable (most are after a few revisions of the OS, although crApple still rule here), and can access arsebook and twotter, do users give a monkeys? Traditional communications methods - email (Android's biggest downfall for me) or even calls/texts aren't important (look at the outcry over GiffGaffs announcement to reduce their 250m/Unlimited_text/Unlimited_data to 250m/Unlimited_text/750Mb has caused, with most users saying drop the call/text allowance to sod all, but keep the unlimited data).

The make (ignoring crApple brainwashed fans) is unimportant. Features are. Nokia are pinning their hopes on a decent camera system, and will shore up Windows (and Nokia's RF is usually pretty good). crApple have nothing special now, beyond 'design' and an OS "that just works as you would expect it to", and, at last, a decent phone system. Google, in reality, have nothing on the face of it, but does allow manufacturers to put their own stamp on it, although outside Samsung, nobody has really succeeded. Android also has the lowest ranking in surveys for people upgrading...  ...and the market for 'new' Smartphone users is now quite small, everything is Smartphone upgrades now on.

Maybe there is room for iOS, Android and Windows  :-\, that will be a burden on developers. HTML5 isn't really ready yet, so that kind of shortcut isn't an option.

can't understand why people want to pay double the price for something that is inferior so say a htc one x or a galaxy s3
Depends what you want ;) Android is too buggy and unreliable for what I want, whereas the Apple just works ;) ;)
Trouble is it doesn't work particularly well with owt else... Had to cancel my lovefilm account because it was updated to work more smoothly on the gaypad2 at the expense of android >:(

Also when you get your Iphone will you then have to replace all the apps for compatability reasons? And if so, at what cost?

Apparently backing up your phone doesn't back up your apps but would need syncing which i didnt do. :(
Title: Re: iPhone 5 Next Week 12th September Wednesday...

Purchased apps should still be marked as purchased in iTunes store, so its just a case of downloading again. You need to sync to back it up properly.

As I refuse to have iTunes installed, I never back mine up, but my important data is automatically synced via other methods.

it no biggy really, as all the ones the user downloads are in "purchased" on the the app store app. Just go through, tick the ones you want, and not the crap ones you didn't want but never bothered ones arse to remove, and it's all sorted. :y

Vodafone just rang me and said they are very sorry for refusing me the new iPhone 5 when i rang last week to order the 64 gig model in white, even though the CEO's executive assistant told me it'd be FREE because of problems id had with poor signal, they firstly wanted £169, i said no thanks and I'm off to T Mobile,
anyway... They've rang me and said okay, we'd like to keep you as a customer and we've ordered one and you'll get it within 2 weeks,

RESULT!! no charge whatsoever! Kerchinggggggggg! :y

Exactly, DLK :y

Due to building your right bicep up as a teenager, the larger screen is needed :P.

But joking aside, there is no one-size-fits-all mobile. For me, S3 is too big, no usable mail client, and a non-consistent interface. Andriod still lacks the stability I need as well (all Android, not just S3). I use a gayPhone, whilst it works very well for me, the limitations crApple put on I find frustrating sometimes, thus have to jailbreak to enable Hotspots.

Size wise it is thinner and lighter than the 4 and only 8-10mm longer... It hardly notices TBH :y

I don't like this new maps malarky, not as good as the old maps app. Mind you, I must say the Sat-Nav that comes with the new Maps is really quite good for free. They were making a big deal about this building thing though, and it only works in cities and on the 4s & 5 which I don't have, but I've lost street view, and gained nothing really  :(. Saying that I've tried the building view on both my sons' 4s's and it's nothing to get excited over.

Should get about £390 on eBay its only a few weeks old a replacement from apple.
Just that selling things like mobile phones attracts scammers.. lost 2 phones in the past on eBay sold a Sony Ericsson C905 a few years back and had a PayPal claim saying one of the buttons wasn't working then PayPal believed the buyer so i had no choice but to accept a return and refund the buyer then a few days later i receive the package with just the box no phone nothing just a empty box, took 2-3 months to get my money back only after involving the Police, trading standards etc

I never use the phone, well, very rarely. :)

Had a proper play with gayPhone 5 today. Its certainly noticibly quicker than gayPhone 4, and miles quicker than my poor old 3GS (which really did suffer with the 'upgrade' to iOS5).

Its a tad taller - 8-10mm, slightly narrower, and with a protective case, about same depth.

Not sure what to do - stick with my working, but sluggish 3GS, get a 2nd hand 4 or 4S cheap, buy a new 8Gb 4, or a new 5 (no point buying a 4S, as not far off 5 prices).

I'm kinda stuck with Apple until somebody comes up with a decent email client for Android, or WinPhone 8 takes off (again depending on the mail client, as WinPhone 7's is pretty poor)

Exchange email client on ICS does the job for me

Does a decent email client exist? Not sure I've ever found one.  :-\

They all seem bent on doing all sorts of things that are more interesting than simply syncing with the inbox on a mail server and letting me read and write sodding emails. >:(

Pop in exchange details, along with gmail. Drop down to select each, lists mails. Happy to demo it in a few days  :y

Well, if your even concidering the 5, it must be quick enough to justify the cost.

Or is he a desk spanking fan boy..? ;D

Since the iOS 5 update, the 3GS is starting to show its age, both lack of RAM and CPU performance. Probably quite slow NAND as well.

So toying with a 4 or later. 4 (8Gb) is cheap enough to buy. 4S is virtually same price as 5, so you'd buy the latter for better future proofing, although that extra 8-10mm would annoy me. Plus Mrs TB still needs to get me a birthday pressie ;D.

But, I'll probably keep the 3GS, and see if anyone can make a usable mail client for a Galaxy Mini, or how WinPhone 8 pans out.

I know I keep banging on about mail, but its probably the most important part of my phone. I could (almost) happily get rid of the web browser functionality if the mail client was good. The crApple one is very good (for me).

landscape and portrait  :-\  very annoying as the keyboard is slightly higher so one tends to miss the space bar etc.... naturally expecting it to be where it normally is  >:(

Getting board with iOS tbh. But Ipad mini anyone? Looks a more sensible size.

...and I wonder if there will an iPhone mini too. :-\
Same here  :-\  Also getting rather annoyed with iOS6 WiFi issues when the phone is locked it switches to 3G then after unlocking the phone takes a few seconds to get back onto WiFi which buggers the iCloud back up at night due to this and also notifications can become late  >:(

(this is a software issue as my 4S and 5 are affected but when i was on iOS5 no such problem as this before)
This WiFi problem is also getting on my tits not that i have any tits  ::)

But for a little extra speed, its a lot of money.  Plus, I really don't want another overpriced crApple product, so more than likely will wait and see what pans out.

Lets face it, the gayPhone 5 offers very little extra than my strong, robust, reliable 3GS...

Its slow loading apps, or switch apps. Running apps, its fine, mostly. But if typing and something happens, eg a text or email, I can get a fair few letters ahead before it catches up ;D

As said, its probably not annoying enough to warrant spending £600 on it.

And, by not being all excitable over a new iOS version, I still have Google Maps ;D

For things like LoveFilm they will need to re-encode all films in new aspect ratio, live streams will need new resolution playlists.

So it's not an app update, it's behind scenes it needs to update

Most places will wait until new device is released, then build and test against it, then released. Even when built it takes at least 2 weeks to be approved by Apple. Its going to be another month or so before update Apps really start to flow

Get the odd fingerprint, but with screen on, don't see it.  I use cheap nasty screen protectors, not sure if that makes a difference - usually makes it worse IME.

The only screen trouble I have is a chunk missing, not sure if its just protector, or if its gone into the glass.
