Anyone know how different the MPG on a Senator 3.0 24V auto would be say compared to a 3.0 V6 Omega Auto ? :-\
And performance figures comparison.. :)
-
What you got your eye on? :D :D
-
My Senator used to get driven pretty hard and didnt spend much time on motorways. It returned an average 24mpg,which is better than either of my 2.5 Omegas have returned.Performance is a hell of a lot better than a 2.5 Omega and probably similar to a 3.0 Omega. :y

Sill have a soft spot for them and the Dual Ram engine ;)

I'd have thought the Senator would be allot more thirsty than the EcoTec engines.. If only the Senator engine could have had the sound of the Omega V6 and the strength of the straight 6 24v ::)

Better engine in every way imo.Can you imagine what would have happened if Lotus tried putting a pair of turbos on a v6 and tuning it to 350 or so BHP ? :)

similar to a nuclear power plant meltdown and the rest :o ;D

I wonder how many Omega's have had a heart transplant from a 24v Senator...
-
I've had 3.0 24v auto and 3.0 12v auto Sennys. The 24v I never saw more than 6, yes 6 mpg from!!! It was used in a far away place (very cold place) for short journeys (choke probably never got a chance to turn off! And I'm sure there was a fault somewhere, still, it was like an absolute rocketship, oh yeah it had no exhaust for the most part and sounded absolutely amazing! If you stood next to it idling and spoke, your voice would begin to sound like an alien!! Hahaha! I digress, the 12v I got a consistent 16-17 around town.

IMHO the straight 6 sounded much nicer than the V6, and I doubt there's any significant difference in fuel consumption. Slightly older design maybe but still a modern-ish pent-roof 4 valve combustion chamber and without some of the daft emissions features of the V6 (i.e. burn more fuel to heat the cats up quicker).
-
Around town my 24 valve Senator used to do 23/24 mpg, whereas the Omega struggles to do 21/22mpg :-\

you've never owned a 24 vv Senator have you ::) ::) The Senator used to hold onto revs too when it was cold. ;) ;)
-
Performance and MPG are broadly similar (although power delivery a little different due most likely to dual ram/multiram differences).

Straight 6 :-* I almost bought one at the time but rust put me off it , so i bought a carlton 2.0 cdx which was also a little better on fuel 8)

It wasn't that I was referring to but SAI combined with a horribly rich mixture. We did have one in the family in the early 90's. ISTR it was significantly better on fuel than the V6 Volvos my dad had previously had, and much quicker and more refined. Probably ahead of its' time back then. Sadly never mine, although I nearly put in an offer when it was moved on with only 18k on the clock. :'( ISTR that the insurance quote was a bit of a sticking point. ::)
Although a boat anchor, the S6 did have a better character than the V6 IMHO. Smoother and that lovely growl. Might be looking through rose tinteds after all this time, though. ;)

I have had one 2.5 series 2 senny and a pair of 3.0 series two,s all twelve valve. the 2.5 was a manuel and returned high twenties driven hard. The 3.0 gave me no less than 20 around town. the Carlton GSI 12v was even better and a manual. On runs it gave me up to 37 and mid twenties in town. The pair of 24V diamond estates, both auto, I had gave 34/35 on a run but i didnt do any constant town use with either. My 2.5 diesel estste ,mig with auto box does overall consumption of 34.2 with no chip. I also have an old series 1.5 senny manual with a carb and my run average was always 30. Hope this helps.

No significant difference in economy or performance between a 24v Senator and a 3 litre Omega.

Thanks for all your reply's ;)
Unfortunately the Senny I was after was sold to someone before i even got a chance to see it :(
Ah well the hunt goes on for whatever comes first a 24V Senator or a V6 Omega :y

Although it`s a personal taste I think the S6 sounds better than the V6, especially with the Jetex and decat combo 8)

Had the RB stainless exhaust and decat on my Senator, sounded lovely for the brief time it actually worked before it spat its cam chain...

It went years ago ....... I meant that if he was to see it while on the hunt :y :y

I miss my old Senator, I much preferred the S6 engine noise & from maintenance point of view. No crappy cam covers, no belts to worry about, they should have continued to develop that as a dedicated RWD engine.
For me V6 has always been a bodge as it was designed for FWD & RWD, the S6 should have been left in RWD & got DBW & coil pack setup and fine tuned.
-
Wise words young Tunnie. :y :)

.... the S6 should have .... & coil pack setup and fine tuned.
It was for the Lotus Carlton/Omega ;) ;) ;) It used 3 coils from the US GM parts bin. :y

Last time i seen a senny on the road was my mates about 15years ago :'( Broke his heart when he had to sell it , i was driving a 2.9 granada at the time and nearly swopped it for his ;)

Did'nt know that :y
Cracking engine, if only :'(

Although ill thought out!
There was no way the straight six would continue to be developed, it could not meet the stricter emmission standards, was very heavy and to niche, the V6 fitted both front and rear wheel drive platforms and hence there was a BUSINESS CASE for it thanks to the massive volumes.

It could have been made lighter though, think it had cast iron heads?
I can understand why they did it from a business perspective, but from an owner, driver, DIY work view the S6 I feel would have been better.
But anything designed for use in multiple environments would be compromised, compared to something designed for a specific place. It has to be said that GM no doubt made a lot more fixing V6's than S6's - Cambelts, cam covers cost us loads, Omegas in their prime doing that as dealer jobs must have been a nice little earner.
-
When you speak to the dealers they hardly ever did any work on them, the odd cambelt change but that was about it and you know my view on chains, I would have a belt every day of the week.
You also have to consider that the V6 improved the handling to by shifting the weight rearwards and giving it the 50:50 weight distribution rather then the nose heavy more tail happy Senator setup.
I would guesstimate that the straight six re-development would cost in the order of a 9 figure sum and hence why it never happened.
Also, the V6 is not as bad as people think, cam cover gaskets are what, every 8-10 years or 100K miles of the engine gets serviced with most only truely blowing once the breather block (again due to lack of servicing), cambelt 4years, 40K again pretty easy to do, spark plugs are more challenging but still much easier than many other motors (try doing 6 on a Smart!) plsu the intervals are longer.
Horses for courses and all that.

......
I'll do the Omegas 3 time a day instead of just once on a Smart Roadster (the back end needs to be removed to get the lower 3 :o :o :o)
