I have my milk delivered......i pay well over the odds for it compared to supermarket prices.....however it tastes fresher and nothing like it coming out of a glass bottle....i like to support local businesses if i can.
Had letter from Milko today with final bill and del.....saying that he's not covering my area anymore and passed my account onto another milko.....trouble is this milko is based in Melksham......hardly local to me!
So, I've being trying to find another local milko, that gets his milk local to me.....its harder than you think :o
Might have to go back to supermarket milk.....if i carnt find a local milko....there is a local dairy just down the road from me....so think i will pop in and see who they supply.
-
before , until some time ago markets were selling daily milk which even have its original cream if you wait a day.. but they then start to sell its cream seperately and its lost from milk.. however, still daily milk here is ok if you accept to have it less oil/cream..
ps: it was a govt organization founded 90 years ago.. private firms sell crap..

We have a milk man too.
It tastes better because it's still pasteurised (assuming you're not lucky enough to still have green top/'raw milk' ). The stuff at the supermarket is homogenised.
Good luck finding another milkman. :y
-
I miss having a milkman proper milk as I call it.

Don't know if it is any good but this lot deliver to my road http://www.milkandmore.co.uk/

Sorry, but that isnt a local milko.......its part of Dairy Crest, it may get delivered by local milkos.....but the milk could come from any part of the country....they also sell to supermarkets, so would be the same milk i guess... :-\
But thanks for the input :y
-
No idea if our milkman is local, but we use one to have milk twice a week, so she only has to go to the supermarket once a week.
-
Our milkman retired. Not replaced. Not really a problem as you just buy the size your household get thru in a day or two.
-
Bring back the milkman and coalman . Milk always tasted better in glass bottles as long as the blue tits didnt get the cream :P
-
They slow down your pace of life though. The float that comes round here slows all the traffic - we want to go at 60 and he is doing max 10 mph at 7.30 in the morning. Whilst the idea is quaint the reality is that we have moved on for the better except for those who cannot get out and do not do online - solutions for them have to a great extent been left behind.
-
We used to get milk delivered to the door some years ago. We stopped as the milkman was bent. Always trying to charge us for milk not recieved, and we could never prove anything one way or the other. In a supermarket, pick up carton, pay for it and leave, simple.
-
..... In a supermarket, pick up carton, pay for it and leave, simple.
.... another local business goes to the wall because the money has gone from the local economy to Tesco/Asda/etc .... Simple! :(

It could be argued that the large supermarkets support the local economy with employment. ;)
That said, we support local business' where practicable for Bread, Green Grocery, and Meat simply for the provence and quality. When it comes to other household goods and produce we do use Waitrose or Sainsburys. :)
If we could get milk delivered straight from the farm we would but there are no local suppliers :(

I agree with the sentiment, however the milk delivery companies were not really local businesses, they were big National concerns. And if their employees had been honest I would still be using them.

Are you sure you wernt a victim of milk theft.....goes on quite a bit, milk getting pinched from doorsteps :-\ esp if you dont have a front garden/path to your frontdoor.

This wasn't a case of milk getting nicked from the door, it was about being charged when we were away and had cancelled, disputes about the quantities, even disputes about whether we had paid or not (started to write cheques so there was proof), all sorts of things. No, life is complicated enough, the supermarket it simpler.
-
Asda....4 pints...£1. You can't argue with that, and before you go on about the taste, we use red...milky water. ;D

Fair enough....prolly not milko's fault tho' . If the big bad national computer says you've had the milk or not paid :-X

I have red top too.....and the taste :-X ;D
But it is, atm, £2.60 for four 1 pint bottles. If you go through 2/4 pints a day then i can see its makes sense to buy supermarket milk if your on a budget :)

I've only ever drank the full fat stuff, apart from when at the in-laws when the only option is semi-synthetic - & you can tell the difference in coffee. It's only recently that I've had to give the green top (untreated) milk up because the local milkman has stopped doing it (before he reckons the law says so) :(
-
I cannot remember the last time I saw a milkman, must be quite a few years ago now though.

We have used the semi-synthetic stuff for years , some folks use carnation tin milk in coffee :o

I am switching to abel and cole as they do non-homogenised milk. I have been searching for it down here for ages!

Thats seemed a fairly good shout Guffer, as their milk supplier is Berkeley Farm Dairy, which is only about 2 miles from me. So nice and local. However, looking at Abel and Cole's website, it seems you have to order a min of £10/week from them. Not something im sure i want to do :-\

I had to google this......i think theres a slight misunderstanding .....when i say i have red top....i actually mean this.....theres a difference in coloured top between glass and plastic bottles :y
Plastic bottles
Blue top - Whole Milk (3.6% fat content)
Green top - Semi-Skimmed Milk (1.8% fat content)
Orange top - (1% fat content) (Except Morrisons and Waitrose)
Red top - Skimmed Milk (0.1% fat content)
Less Common
Purple top - Morrisons own brand, 'The One' brand
Purple top - Waitrose (1% fat content)
Purple top - Tesco own brand, Creamfields
[edit]Glass bottles
Gold foil - milk from Channel Island (Jersey/Guernsey) breeds (about 5.2% fat)[1]
Silver foil - whole milk (about 4% fat - minimum 3.5%)
Red foil - Homogenised whole milk
Red and silver striped foil - semi-skimmed milk (less than 2% fat)
Blue and silver striped foil - skimmed milk (0.1 to 0.3% fat)
Green foil - raw (unpasteurized) milk, giving rise to the name "green-top milk"
Gold striped foil on a green background - unpasteurized milk from Channel Island breeds[2]
