...get stanley-knife-happy and cut the wire that goes in to it from the bottom of the expansion tank and tape it up? Just arrived at my mum's to get this job done and to be honest it has only ever come on when it's been on the MAX ::) so more than happy to do away with it TBH.
Your thoughts :)
-
dont..
-
One day it may save your engine..
Better to get a new expansion tank, IMHO.
-
Ok fair enough. i have a spare but just fancied gettin rid of the level sensor.
ok, if i swap over tanks is there a non messy way of swapping it over? i'm just going to undo it all and bung ends as best i can

That's how we did it in the middle of a field in Newent (Bob Dent's old car, now residing with Jimbob & Ljay) :y
Unfortunately we mad the mistake of doing it when the engine was still a touch warmer than we thought :-X ::)

:o they bang it to us in school to let it cool down first before opening the coolant ;D :y

ps thanks all for the info :y

New coolant bottles do wonders for look of engine bay too!

that's actually the reason i'm resisting putting ralfs in.... its not the best looking tank ;D

Would it be churlish to suggest unplugging it? ???

good point. not sure :-\

Just unplug it and bridge the contacts with a paper clip. Job done.

Thanks JB. Do I do it for both plug and connector?
And sorry for being stupid :-[ but do i just bend paperclip to touch each contact and the tape it up so it dont fall out?
-
Just the plug Steve, and yes, bridge both female terminals (at the plug) and tape secure
-
just replace the tank man, its a 10 min job. ::)

lol i'm not bothered about swapping it over ::)
it's making the decision as to whether i want to keep the level sensor or not. :y
-
keep it,it can be an engine saver,if you suddenly lose coolant you will know about it,instead of having a seized engine which will cost you a fair amount to sort out compared to £35 for a new coolant tank :y

This may be a solution Webby :y

Indeed. A sudden leak of coolant could leave the temperature sensor without any flow past it, so before you know what's happened, the engine will be wrecked.

Hmmmm.
Perhaps this is falling on ears who do not wish to hear, but I lift the bonnet on my car at least once a week to top-up washer fluid, run a rag around the bay etc......... Who would HONESTLY pull over the very instant the MID said 'Check Coolant Level'?
I'd wager nobody who really knows their car would.
We would keep an eye on the temp gauge, have a look-out for steam and drive on until we reached our destination and THEN have a look...... wouldn't we?

I personally agree. :y

is it always the tank causing the low level warning? On my last mig I kept getting it and recall ruling out the expansion tank sender and assumed there was another sender somewhere and an airlock. It coincided with the heater being only luke warm. Both both problems were alleviated simultaneously by a fairly savage descale.

Yep, sort of... It's the level sensor in the tank ;) I think the result you had was down to the de-scale :y

I would for exactly the reason you state. Well, not instantly but ASAP ;) I keep on top of my cars (generally) so would know that the warning coming up was for a reason ;)
In fact, on my saloon I had this happen on the way down the A3 to go to a funeral... Pulled over and sure enough coolant was low due to a failed HBV. Managed to limp it to the funeral and the 160 miles home though, once I'd worked out what CC setting I needed to minimise the leak :y Probably saved the engine at the speed I was going :-X

No I had already thoughly descaled the float in the tank, no difference. First thing I did (and a lot easier than descaling the whole system). Thats why I didn't think it was the expansion tank sorry float in the tank sorry sensor under the tank activated by float in the tank sorry switch in the sensor activated by float in the tank ;)
