Title: Engine Temps
Post by: flymofred on 15 February 2013, 11:46:40
Hello I have a 53 plate 2.6 estate  Where is the sender unit for temp gauge. In this cold weather the gauge barely  makes 80c I see that thermostatshould start to open @ 92c so would I expect the temp gauge to be about the same. I measured the radiator temp. after a run at the top hose inlet and that confirmed the gauge fig. of 80c.Is it time for new stat? The how to for it fills me with dread. Thanks M

The sender is on the back of the block on the coolant bridge, however the issue to me sounds like a lazy stat.

This sits in the middle of the V at the front  :y

Its a fairly easy job but you have to take the plenum and manifolds off to get to it, I am sure there is a link in here somewhere, that somebody will be able to steer you to.

99% of the job is straight forward, plenum does need to come off. But, its *that* bolt which causes problems  ::)

Removing the bolt wasn't too bad when I did mine. Putting it back took several attempts and a considerable amount of advanced swearing. In the end, I installed the torx head bolt in the bin, and replaced it with a normal hex head one and washer. Which went in first time.
I'd say the worst bit of the job is separating the thermostat housing from the transfer pipe.

i too found the hardest bit seperating the pipe from the stat housing. it was caked in bloody sealant. are you meant to put sealant there?

No way would my 'stat & transfer pipe separate in situ. I ended up hacking the end of the 'stat off to save my transfer pipe. I then sawed through the remnants of the stat in the vice. I knew I should've bought a transfer pipe when I bought the 'stat.  ;)
