Post by: cem_devecioglu on 16 March 2013, 18:14:47
gulped my first celulosic thinner while trying to clean a glass pipette..  finally changed color mixing method..

started to use a sharper spoon which is easier..

and by the way spend 7 hours mixing omegas new color  and noting ,brushing color on paper.. and rainy day dont  help >:(

final mixture

all colors standox
blue 56 gr
silver 8.3 gr
directional white 19 gr
black 18.5 gr
yellow 10 gr
pearlish white blue 18 gr
pearl white 2 gr

will try the final color on a wide paper with spray gun tomorrow :-\

if I'm satisfied with the color tone I will try the same mixture on a 3x scale..  (1kg standox metallic paint 80£)

I'm changing the original color because the red-violet content fades highly and ı'm trying to make a less fading color tone from the beginning(already faded)

result: complete failure!! :(

as I was impatient yesterday, I break the first rule and prepared the color when sun was not showing its face,

and I got my nth lesson.. :-\   especially when working with directional+pearlescent color additives always wait for sun..

the final color has nothing to do with the one I was trying to find ;D ;D ;D ;D   with todays additions 200 grs of paint , thinner and 10 hours of work in total for nothing :-\

and in the photos you cant see the purple tone it has.. because original color code has a blue that tends to show purple tones which fades under the sun and its still a headache..

 :-\

for countries like UK, artifical sun light devices are sold for paint shops and deffo not cheap .. but I dont own one..

now coming back from the backside garden, the color is not bad when no sun light but any sun light shows its purple tone which drives me crazy..  :(

originally I prepared the color yellowish but my wife said its too  green and added more blue :P >:(

and now discovered something, the original dark blue has red in it.. I must use another blue tone mix with black.. and fade it with silver and pure yellow..

so bye bye 282 color mix completely..

second trial result: half failure :-\

today we prepared/weighed the color mixture in the kitchen .. my wife placed all sorts of thinners near the cooking fire while she was cooking for cats (and adding colors as her hands more sensitive) , I was smoking meanwhile .. and if for once we caught fire, no one could ever stop us burning completely ;D ;D

but, its more suitable for facelifts.. :-\

I finally decided to prepare a color between the 2.. so quickly prepared 3rd trial and somehow managed to prepare a color which is complete blue in shadow and dark green in sun :o ;D  will see next week.. but need to prepare the primary coat + color coat of another panel  :-\

ps: when I will prepare the 3rd I will take the piccies near omega and will share.. also we have to wait for those panels to dry completely .. this will take 1-2 weeks..

;D  dont know how you are with blue cars, but those dark colors can make you completely wet on a sunny day.. (remember I cant use AC as I quickly catch cold  :-\ )

Don't quite know what it is about Diesels, Probably the torque while on the blower and the fact you leave them anywhere and don't care too much about them.

unfortunately rotary sanders are not that succesful because with a small mistake they can dig the paint.. best is always hand.. may be I can use rotary sanders when removing old paint and primer.. :-\

trial  #5  :)   I think I have found the color I searched for.. but to be sure, I need to wait minimum 2 weeks for it to dry completely..

I painted the color 7-8 layers to control its red/purple content.. unfortunately still there is purple tone in low angles.. but I'm in the border of blue to turn green..next trials will be on the same color playing with effect white/pearlescent colors

I really would like to :)  and trust me I would try my best..  :y

but.. :-\

I have big problem with time.. I also need to paint my omega and it will take at least 40-50 days and I cant get permission from job more than 30 days :'(  besides I need to hire an empty garage as I dont have :(

ps: trial/test number 8 was painted with a 0.8 micron hvlp that I bought recently..  it paints very nicely and creates less orange peel shape even without paint cabin heat ???

pps: if you need I will pm you my latest mix ratios :y

this weather will be very useful .. there wont be too much dust around I guess.. which is my biggest problem for home paintings ..

although this topic is a bit old and dusty , I find it more suitable to add for members to compare old color choices

as there is a health problem in the family I was unable to continue my trials for some time and had to postpone painting of omega

to an unknow date.. :(

here are latest trials

the latest trial is #18..  actually its darker than #14 (door panel)  but #14 have dual laquer application (laquered , sanded, laquered again) and its thicker in laquer so colors may deceive you..

cem, I have to admire your work unfortunately from afar. how it is that you have the patience to try all these different ,mixes is far beyond me, to achieve what you have achieved is far beyond my limited capabilities. I could not/would not be able to begin to find the patience to get anywhere near that you have achieved. good luck, and I hope you succeed with your ventures !

thanks :) :y :y :y

Still I need further trials, but first I will built a small paint cabin as I'm fed up of sanding dust and insects .. and I will purchase a better good condition part as painting and sanding irregular shapes creates some other niggles..  and I need a better compressor as my compressor looses pressure even before I finish half of a layer :(

Ignore the wife cem - keep it up - liked no. 8, and also like no. 18.

Hope you get the time to paint your Omega, as I know you are spending a lot of time travelling.

the last months as I planned a complete paint I didnt use protector polish as its sneaky dangerous for paint.. and the sun did its usual job and eroded the last the laquer layer.. and unplanned events did occur unfortunately :(

finally I got what I searched for.. aşlthough I add some amount of magenta , its not purple on side angles (original color mixture is completely purple when new) and have enough metallic flakes..

as its freshly painted and polished its a bit lighter than the original tone.. when it dries completely it will be 2 shades darker.. but this will take few months..

although I dont think anyone on here will go in the trouble of testing/trying those colors I share here
for anyone who wants to paint his car with those custom colors in the future..

lines with red are successful imo..

paint is applied as follows :

primary coat : green epoxy (glassurit)  ( spray gun nozzle size : 0. 8)

dry..

sanding : 400 grid wet

1st base coat  (spray gun nozzle size : 0. 8) (mix of directional white + pearlescent+ blue pearlescent) 4 layers   standox

2nd base coat (applied while 1st wet) (spray gun nozzle size 1.0)  for ex 25    applied as 6 layers  1-3-6 longitudinal 2-4 diagonal direction standox
(wait 5-10 minutes between every 2 layer)

dry..

sanding 1200 grid wet

3 rd base coat 6 layers standox (spray gun nozzle size 1.0)

clean with tack rag after dry

clear coat 1st application 8 layers  (spray gun nozzle size 0. 8)  (wait 5-10 minutes) between every 2 layer) standox platinum

sanding 600-800 wet until no orange peel left

clear coat 2nd application 8-12 layers (spray gun nozzle size 0. 8)  (wait 5-10 minutes) between every 2 layer)  standox platinum

sand with 1500 wet until no orange peel and dust left

than 3000-6000 trizact wet..

now the ratios
