Looking at a Omega 2.2 , what if anything should i be looking out for ? Never had a 2.2 and its an auto so the right number of pedals for me :)
-
It's a miggy so it's the usual things cam belt, cam covers, etc, etc. I'm sure people who know better than me will be along to tell you more and of course, as is par, that there are two cylinders missing ;D but I know better ::)
My experience would point me at the head gasket as desmonds seem to be more prone. Usually OK if the antifreeze has been kept good though.
The Auto box is another as the 3rd gear solenoid can go. Also when was the fluid and filter changed.

Similar checks as the V6. Suspension, engine leaks, smooth transmission, ALL warning lights illuminate & extinguish. Notwithstanding the cambelt & waterpump change, check the quality of the coolant. On the 4-pot poor coolant history = HG failure. Test drive to check diff, prop, steering vagueness, brake judder etc

Yes sorry its a petrol one :-[ :y No history either :-[ Although the bloke said it drives nice and smooth with no bangs or whistles :-\

He would ;D

Aye ;D But then there would be no point saying that then turning up and its a bag of nails :-\

exhaust manifolds prone to crack between no2 and 3 cylinders, other than that just the usual bits and pieces that crop up, mines done upwards of 170k just needs a service and decent tyres !

Arrh good point there cnj id totally forgot about that ... are those manifolds easily available ? Thats good mileage :y
-
manifolds are not overly common for good used ones, have seen them on a Vauxhall spares site for about 130 new, don't know the quality mind, could try andy c for the price of genuine or try car parts connexions for a long look !!
-
incidently the pedal trick doesn't work so some form of code scanner would be needed to check for codes both current and expired !

4 pots love fresh oil, can really notice when it's been changed. As Rob says coolant service is key, my 2.2 is 162k & original HG, fatherTs 2.2 HG failed at 90k (dealer serviced until we bought it)
DIY service work is so, so much easier. Cam cover is a lovely little job as is stat change, I just find life much much easier doing standard jobs.
Easily cruise at 80mph all day long, just takes a little longer to get there than V6 :)

Yep its a lot easier to change those , am i thinking its similar set up to the vectra B engine :-\

Engine other way around compared to Vectra, everything is easily reachable :)

See you got the "bug" again - good luck with it ::) ;)

Wise decision, Mr EMD. :y

But if i could get the car cheap enough changing the headgasket on a 4 pot is simple enough , i can check and if its a bit iffy knock him down on price ;)

Would agree do it all at once HG, belt, pump, EGR, throttle, stat, cam sensor/cover gasket, stat, box fluid & filter/gaskets, plugs oil & filte, both manifold gaskets +. At a guess £500-£600 should cover it if you are doing the work

Didn't do any of the highlighted things on mine in three or so years of owning it and its still going strong ::)

I know my old 2.0 vectra B suffered head gasket failure because of lack of coolant changes ... looking at the water ways it was in a terrible state :(

It's just a list of what could be done seeing as the thing will be in bit's for the HG. Might as well sort of thing.
It's almost what I did to mine when my HG failed, wont have to worry about mine for three years now :y apart from all the other suff that can go. Car's gotta love em ::)
-
Being a little cheeky here but my 2.2 is up for sale, if you are interested drop me a PM.
As for what to look for everything that has been mentioned really. HG though a pain is easy to do yourself.

HG is a doddle to do really but dont want to be doing that anytime soon ::) my 2.0 Vectra B engine needed the head skimmed and even then you could still see the water ways corrosion/pits and all ..skimmed it to an inch of its life ;D went like a bullet after that , then someone ran into the side of it and wrote it off >:(

Unfortunately times are hard, Mr EMD........ and this means you end up in an area called 'compromise' :-\
It's the same with any car, stay below 4 or even 5 figures and you 'compromise'........spend 1.2 million and you don't have to.
Check your lottery ticket carefully this week, and everything could change. :y :y :y
