Title: Smoking
Post by: Jo_Kent on 18 May 2013, 01:24:15
After almost 40 years of smoking I have finally given up using the 10Motives electronic cigarette.  Recently the pharmacy signed me off their stop smoking service because even with the usual aids i.e. patches, inhaler, gum, lozenges, I still couldn't stop altogether.  I'd even had the Champix tablets a couple of years ago and still I couldn't do it.

I havent had a cigarette for 8 days now, and athough that might not seem much its a mighty achievement for me and I have no craving or withdrawal symptoms.  Just have to wean myself off the electronic cig now - but its a hell of a lot cheaper and healthier so Im not too worried if it takes a while.

Just wanted to share with you smokers out there who might also be wanting to stop.

And Iain.... well done to you too!

I never used to smoke in the house or in front of the offspring. In april 2012 I was out the back having one and just decided to stop. Not had one since, I do get the very occasional urge, like going out etc, but I now consider myself a non smoker.

Giving up is easy ......... I did it loads of times!  ;D

Seriously ..... well done! I gave up 11 years ago after smoking for about 25 yrs with the help of Chapix's predecessor, Zyban, it's the hardest thing I've done. But you'll soon realise how much a smoker smells when they've just come back inside after having a quick ciggy  ;)  ;)

Keep it up!  :y  :y  :y  :y

My best mate gave it up without the usual aids available about 12yrs ago. He was early 30s at the time, so a 20yr smoker.

The original reason was a health scare - he could have died that day - but after the first couple of weeks, even though he still craved them, it was the sight of his "fag money" (a clear jar that his missus put the cash she used to spend on his tabacco and rizlas) growing, and that money was his for whenever he wanted treats, which for him was enough to keep off them. I think he knows, as well as I do, that if he lit up another, he'd be hooked again. Stress issues aside, I'm delighted to say he is as fit and well as I've ever known him, though he is on the rat poison for life now.

Bloke in the office gave up a few weeks ago, completely cold turkey. He has all the electronic fags, but decided not to use them. He's doing really well, and gets pleasure from buying the kids DVDs, or taking his lad to see the Arse play at the Emirates, things he was unable to afford before.

My eldest bro, he'll go for years without, then get suckered in for a few months, realise what a mugs game it is, and just stop. Just like that. I can see why smokers envy him.

My mum, bless her, was always against smoking. Ironic, really, as she worked in Sales at Rothmans ;D. She was always bringing home cheap fags for my older brothers.

Me, only tried a cigarette once, puked everywhere. Never again. I was 5.  I very occasionally may have a cigar though, esp at Christmas dos  :-[

Lin - keep it up, you're doing really well. I'm told the first 2 months are the hardest, so just go 1 day at a time :). Good luck :y

One of my "holiday buddies" - who I go to France with (and used his car last year ;D) - had the hypno shite, that worked for him for years. They screwed something in his brain, so that when the craving came, he'd drink water. Some kind of association shite. He only vaguely remembers the session.

Sadly, a series of events have made him start again  :'(

Used to smoke when I was working but never at home or in the pub.
In fact, on a night out the smoke in pubs did my head in tbh.

Watched lung cancer destroy my grandma over 10 years ago now.
Stopped on the spot.
No gum or anything.
I just decided that I didn't want to put my family threw that I suppose.

Even now, on a bad day I could still smoke one but never have.

Good luck too anybody who stops.
However you do it its worth it  :)

I bought 20 fags a day, sometimes never got through them all but i did buy 20 every day. Now I've put aside my fag money for my holiday in July. I've worked it out that by the time I go on the 5th of July I will have saved £450 from the 1st of May when I stopped :o

Bought those e-fag things for me and Tigger at the beginning of February this year and neither of us have touched a cigarette since. So for us at least they have worked a treat and saved us a small fortune.

I've been smoking for about 14 years and given I just turned 30 is too long  :(

The issue is the majority of my day is spent on my mobile at work and I always smoke while on the phone out the front

I tried quitting but found the 2 are related to the point I was not answering my phone at work on the risk of smoking whilst on it

Guess I will try those electronic things when I get round to it  :y

I read this thread with interest, having tried to give up 18 months ago......lasted a fortnight, i was prescribed patches and used an e cig.....after 2 weeks i couldnt sleep.....so i gave up, bought a packet of ciggies and the same evening had the best nights sleep id had for a fortnight.

Nursie at the surgery had told me to keep the patches on at night (so i wouldnt be craving nicotine when i woke up) but she decided it was the nicotine that was keeping me awake.

Yesterday I dug out my old e cig and found i had 12 cartridges left for it, charged it and gave it a go for an hour......maybe the cartridges dont last or something.....as after an hour of puffing away on it.....i thought buggar this and lite a rollie up.

So ive decided to smoke the rest of the baccy i have....about 250g of it.....tell my Spanish friend not to bring anymore over for me...go see nursey and get some more free patches...and give it a go again  :y

Good luck with the rest of you trying to give up  :y :)

Might be worth trying a new e-cig TD as the atomisers don't last forever, think of them as a service part. I'd recommend an ego-c type. They use tanks of fluid that you refill yourself and there are loads of flavours to try.
I'm on blueberry at the moment and it's very nice.

How many do you smoke in a day Dave?
As you're on rollies you may want a stronger mix, try 30 or 36 mg/ml or 3%.
I was on about 30 filtered rollies a day and I find 1.8% to be about right for me. If you go too strong you'll feel it in the back of your throat. If you manage to ditch fags you can then start to drop the nicotine strength till you're using 0 nicotine. I suppose then it's a case of do you use the e-cig just for the flavours or ditch it altogether.
The tanks are really easy to use, liquid comes in a small plastic dropper bottle and you just squirt it into the tank then plug the tank into the e-cig. You get a few caps for the tanks so you can carry full ones with you in case you run out.

I have tried it all:

I managed a week after some very expensive hypnotherapy

Patches give me terrible nightmares and itch like crazy

Zyban and champix both turned me into a raging lunatic i.e uncontrollable anger levels

Parma violet scented nasal spray, not too bad really

E cig works well and I have done a few days but i have to admit......... I love a nice fag !

I use these http://www.totallywicked-eliquid.co.uk/products/tornado-ego-c-products.html (http://www.totallywicked-eliquid.co.uk/products/tornado-ego-c-products.html)
Never used mail order as they have a shop close by.
Started with an tornado tank but when the atomiser needed replacing I swapped to the ego-c which is basically the same bit of kit but with replaceable atty cartridges so cheaper in the long run.

Dave, Tesco sell the ones Im using on their fag counter - you could always buy the disposable one for £5.99 just to see if it might suit you, then either go for the rechargeable one and refills, or Captain Zok's suggestion of the flavoured ones.  Im using the menthol refills, and they're fine, I'm not having any bad effects at all.

Good luck.

My mother was really heavy smoker with no any health issue at all for all her life long but after she reached the age of 59 suddenly got a lot of problem in a short period of time. All her problems were caused by stenosis of her veins, which was caused by the huge amount of cigarette she consumed. There was no cure for the stenosis as it was so extended then some month later in August last year she passed away :'( smoking caused issue it's like an eagle, which is falling aiming a rabbit but by that time the rabbit senses the eagle's shadow it is too late. Hats off Lin I wish you enough power to insist on your decision!  :y
