Very impressed with these on the elite with 16's, very sure footed in the wet - given the self imposed speed restrictions due age ::) - and very quiet. Also a more comfortable ride than the Conti SC3's on 17's which they replaced.
-
they are a quite and comfortable and designed towards fuel efficiency .. so imo dont push their limits in wet and cold.. :y
-
Oh Ship here we go again ::) ::) :-X
Cem has contributed just waiting for chrisgixer to come along. ;D ;D ;D ;D

How about a tyre thread?
We haven't had one for awhile. :)

Are you suggesting I would take my beautiful Elite out in snow? 8)

Not at all :y
Simply that if you do, put some different tyres on it first ::) my second estate had them fitted and I didn't get to the end of my road, 120 yards away without stacking it >:( slid it all the way back to the drive, swapped the wheels for ones with my favourite tyres on and had no problems for the rest of the winter :y

Winter tyres do have a place in life. However, even with the cold blasts we've had in the last 2 or 3 years, we haven't needed winter tyres for the last 43yrs of my lifetime.
I recall my dad still driving me to school 5 miles away in his DS Safari, and having to lift the suspension to the top "emergency"/wheel changing height to drive over the snow. I'd bet my right bollock that he never had winters, he was tight enough to make tunnie look generous :P
I agree we have times when winters would outperform what I have been using (christ, they'd outperform those SC5s in *any* condition), but that is only for a few days each year. Its simply not financially viable here. Plus, as previously stated, many UK car insurance would be invalidated.

Oh Jamie leave him while he's quiet, ffs! ;D

long years ago , when I was driving my fathers car we didnt know anything specilised like "summer", "winter" tyres. we used our tyres all year . if conditions go bad - I still remember winters with 1.5-2 meters deep snow in anatolia cities-we simply used chains if we could dig ;D
but as time goes by this system invented new ways to earn money from tyres.. :-\
hence seperate winter and summer tyres..
however now it became standard here.. even days with snow is limited in big cities.. but I must admit they are better in wet and cold.. and I hate using chains and freezing my hands in mudy snow.. its not practical..
-
TB this is your fault.......... ;) ;)
-
Chains are great, but rather messy!! ::) ;D
-
I think a fair few of us have chains in the UK, but I can honestly say I've never used mine....

Fairly sure they won't fit the 18"s
...and are very difficult to fit to anything even slightly lowered. Going by my trial runs.

Yeah, not sure I'd want chains too near those Irmscher wheels anyway.
I did a trial fit on the Bullet's 17s, and seemed easy enough. Obviously it was dry, and the ground not covered in snow, and my hands were not blocks of ice, so I'm not looking forward to ever needing to use them ;D

They're ok on Sport stars, if the tyre has good rim protection, as it keeps the chains away. But yes probably best avoided.
-
Provided the chains fit tightly of course. :(

The outside edge of GY F1 Asym2 make Potenza rim protection look mickey mouse ;D. Not checked the inside edge rim protection.

DOH! Irrelevent anyway, as I've still got those shitty SC5s on the back, which offer little rim protection. Not that I fancy my chances in the snow with them - the buggers cant get traction in the dry ;D

I bought a set for The Merc in Lidl last year and used them once, just for a bit of fun really. :) :y
They worked really well and I went up a steep hill on compacted snow with no problems. :y Getting them on was quite easy but getting them off was messy as ....... !! :o Add an old jacket and gloves as part of the kit! :y
