Just done a uswitch broadband test as it's been crap for weeks and got the following which looks to be crap:
upload 0.7Mb
download 0.3Mb
I'm on sky and it is meant to be 8mb minimum so what to do now? can they/will they do anything if I contact them?

I suspect its an "up to 8Mb", rather than 8Mb minimum.
Check your router for sync speeds, if the router syncs well, then tell Sky to shove it. If the router syncs poorly, disconnect all internal wiring, plug router into main socket, and repeat test. Let us know outcome, as if that improves it, we can advise :y

I assume a sync speed is in this somewhere :-\ router is in the main socket already

Are all extensions disconnected? Are you a long way from your local exchange?

Router direct into main...and only socket, exchange is 3 miles away >:(

Well, you're 'dangle berries'ed then.
Is FTTC available in your area? Is so, how far away is your cabinet?

8 feet away ;D

Has the speed always been that poor?
What figures does your router give for line attenuation and noise margin?

Cut your losses and move to Virgin. ...if it's in the street of course?

goes up to 150 next year :o

As said, if FTTC/Infinity is in your area, its a viable way to get a decent speed boost, seeing how far you are from your local sExchange.

It is a fair amount (I get the same speeds here), but if the server at the other end can only manage to serve it up at 10Mbit then anything else is a waste.

I'm not a big downloader, but when I want a large file, I want it NOW ;D. The days of waiting hours for a MS SP are over :y. Generally, the likes of MS, Debian/Redhat derived Linux have decent bandwidth, more than enough to max my lines :)
For me, FTTC type speeds, really make cloud storage genuinely feasible and useful, and VPN'ing to work decent (Virgin are rubbish for that, sadly, as the upload is just a tad too low). I'd rather see my upload increase than my download - plus you lot would be happier if my upload was quicker, when you are caning the tits off OOF ;D
As an aside, up until April 2011, OOF was served over a 256kbit link :-X, did anyone notice ;). Optimise, and you can get decent speeds from low specs...

I agree, VM are using the boost to 150Mbit to partially justify the next price increase that is due in February but I would be a lot happier with a 50/50 synchronous line TBH

A friend of mine ran a commercial website and forum for ages on a 512/256 home connection for ages when ADSL first came out and nobody noticed, and paid £60 per month for the privilege at the time.

My tablet on WiFi is only 6 down and 1.3 up, but seems fast enough for what I use it for.
