After a call from the owner we've agreed on £6750 for the CLS 500. :y
It will come with a fresh MOT that will be done on either Monday or Tuesday.
I've even paid him a small deposit to show good faith. ::) :-\
Why oh why couldn't I have been sensible for once and bought a cheap to run Daewoo like that STMO chappie?.
I don't think I'll ever learn. ::) ::) :)
First thing I'll do is bin those almost new Michelin Alpin winter tyres. Yuk.
-
I suppose I can kid myself that it's not a totally crazy thing to do.
Because road tax is no more than the MV6 and fully comp insurance comes in at less than £200.
-
Nice!! :y
Why get rid of the tyres? ??? Why not keep them on until they need changing? :-\
-
You impulse shopper you... ;D
Why oh why couldn't I have been sensible for once and bought a cheap to run Daewoo like that STMO chappie?.
Because it would bore you stupid, leaving Mrs Opti two cars to drive, which she would shout at you for. Alot.
As for the winter tyres, you might as well use them until March, and if there's any life left in them, pop them in the shed just in case next winter happens :y certainly no point binning them just 'because' :-\
-
I now have a beautiful 53 plate MV6 to sell.
Somebody will be a very lucky boy. :y

No.

Would you consider a part exchange with your Daewoo, Steve?. Obviously you'll need to bung me a few quid. Lets say your Daewoo plus £300 and we have a deal.

.....
You knew it made sense ;D ;D ;D
Start saving for fuel now. I'd imagine that you could easily run the mpg down to low teens. ::) ::) ::)
As much as I'd have loved the R500 I just couldn't justify a 5 V8 2300kg 4x4 ??? ::) They can keep up with a Golf GTi at the lights :o
Sensibilty made me buy the R320 though :(

I noticed that the trip computer was showing a 24.6 MPG average over the last 600 miles. I'm guessing it must be about as accurate as a sundial. ;D ;D. 15 MPG sounds closer to the mark. :-\

Possible, if only used for Motorway runs :-\

In that case maybe 12 MPG is closer to the mark for the 500. :-\
Oh well, swings and roundabouts. :y

Suits you SIr ;D now give it a good wax . Will it fit in that garage :-\
-
Priced the tyres up yet?
-
Priced the tyres up yet?
Mark DTM reckons on about £800.
However, Wanli Ditchfinders could be significantly cheaper. ::) ::) ::) :D
The crappy winter tyres will suffice for the immediate future. :).......How I hate winter tyres........no need for them whatsoever. :-\
-
Looks to be about 150-200 per corner for half decent fronts and 200-250 per corner for half decent rears.
Of course you might be able to save a few hundred notes with ditch finders.
-
I'd just leave them on until they're shagged whatever the time of year! :)
If it's fine to use summer tyres in winter, then you can use winters in summer, which I have and couldn't tell the difference to be honest! :-\
I'll probably get shouted at now...... ;D ;D ;D

That sounds logical to me, Sir Tig.
Thee fronts look almost new .......the rears about 5-6 mm ish. :y
-
Depends how you drive to be honest although the winter tyres tend to be very noisy in comparison and dry grip is less.

I did notice a fair bit of tyre noise. Even so, it was still far more 'hushed' than my MV6 on Goodyear eagles. :y

Cheaper to insure than a Daewoo , got to be a bonus :P ;D

Hmmmm...only a small bonus though. Opti will just look at it, driving it would be far too expensive for a tightwad such as him.

I won't be using it as much as the Omega, taking Mrs Opti's Corsa on shorter trips.
She'll be fine with the bus.....mixing with the great unwashed. :)

It does. But no more sonorous than a V6 Omega in full flight. :y

I checked out a few Monaro's in the Autotrader. For a 2006 car they range from about £7-£10,000.....which, I think, is on the steep side.
Far more muscular than the Merc though. :'(

Best figure I can find for the CLS is 1824 KG ( Kerb)..........which still puts it in 'fat bastard' territory. ;D ;D
I believe that the VW Phaeton also weighs about 2300 KG.

Women don't possess the mental capacity to appreciate cars like us men, Mr Emd.
A ten year old Corsa will do just fine. ;D

The Ls engine being set and more reliable perhaps? What's the Merc v8 got? Dohc chain driven?

SOHC chain driven......and it gets by on only 3 valves per cylinder.....24 rather than 32.
I'm not sure which valve is missing......inlet or exhaust?
It's certainly in a low state of tune producing barely 60 BHP per litre. :-\
It does have 339 lb ft of torque by means of compensation though. :y

Wonder if the software can be upgraded? Like the BMW 2.5 lump is a 3.0 with detuned software. Wack the 3.0 software on and away you go, 3.0 in your 2.5.

Hmmm. Sounds tempting, Mr Gixer. As I said before, it is the 'runt of the litter'.....later CLS models having 5.5 litres and another 80 BHP before sticking a supercharger on it.
-
It will have a single exhaust valve and twin inlets, easier to pump exhaust gases out than to suck air in.

Is there anything you don't know about cars and trains, Mark?... :) ;D :y

Would the exhaust valve be bigger than the inlet valves to compensate? ??? :-\

I don't know, Tig :'(
But anyone who owned a Honda Wet dream/Superdream will be familiar with three valves per cylinder.
-
Exhaust valve area will be proportional to the total inlet valve area so in this case, it will be equal to or slightly larger I would expect.
-
2 small inlet valves
1 large exhaust valve on those engines :)
-
Little bit like this (perhaps larger exhaust valves) - these are '05 Mustang heads:

1. this monster can easily be tuned.. but I doubt you will need that..
2.if you try hard it can easily go down to single digit consumption figures..
3. keep those winter tyres until end of march .. on a frosty road it may save you from high expenses..
Glad you buy that toy.. enjoy :y

376 lb ft.......Ah yes, the joy of big torque from a turbo diesel. :y :D
Only 220 BHP though...... :P :P :P :P
-
Talking about diesels, always fancied a drive in one of those VW / Audi's with the V10 turbo diesel under the bonnet. Over 700 nm of torque I believe ::)

Newton metres mean nothing to a sad old bastard like myself. ;D ;D ;)

So what's the advantage of having two smaller inlet valves and one big exhaust valve, over 2 valves the same size? ??? :-\

Guessing the two valves have a bigger over all area. There's a limit to the size of two holes within a single bore/head. So a way to get a bigger aperture is to have two holes.
Not sure if another valve would need another cam follower, and hence another cam to run it, due to space on a single cam. Probably.

My understanding is better fuel/air mixing within the cylinder, so giving a "better" spread of flame front / combustion, so increasing efficiency.
If all the fuel/air comes in through one valve it "sits" centrally in the cylinder, two valves ensures better "mixing".
This is all based on what I was told many years back when I asked the question .... no proof whatsoever so may well be totally wrong ... :)

Yep, or more correctly, the cylinder of air gap that's exposed when the valve opens with a given lift is much bigger for a given space in the head when you fill that space with 2 small valves instead of one larger one. You also get better "swirl" which means better mixing of the fuel air mixture in the cylinder and more even filling.
Not sure if another valve would need another cam follower, and hence another cam to run it, due to space on a single cam. Probably.
Yep, it'll certainly need its' own lifter (hydraulic or manually shimmed) to set the clearance. Most have their own cam lobe.
