Title: OE Springs
Post by: Shackeng on 01 February 2014, 13:07:58
Are OE springs avlbl for a reasonable price from VX? If so are they better than, say, KYB?

I couldn't find any listed on TC when I looked last weekend. :(

BOGE were mentioned as a decent alternative so I went to the ZF online catalogue (http://webcat.zf.com/index.asp?SPR=4). Looked up the BOGE part number, called Jason at Allgermanparts (http://www.allgermanparts.co.uk/) and he had a pair delivered to me 2 days later for £39.70 each (+post & VAT came to £101.28))

I wasn't able to save a direct link. The nearest I could get is ZF Catalogue (http://webcat.zf.com/index.asp?SPR=4) then select Make, then model/body, then engine, then click on the picture of spring, then click show parts.

Having used Boge and KYB, I'd go Boge every time...  ...hence when I did the rear springs before xmas, Boge went on.

Presumably you use these because VX OE ones are unavailable/dearer/inferior (delete as appropriate)? :-\

Last time I found a price for Genuine VX  about 4 years ago **I think** they were £240 ish (my memory isn't what it was so don't shoot me if I'm wrong :( )

The quality wasn't / isn't in question - just the price.

This time I couldn't find them listed on the Tradeclub website and I didn't have time to contact/visit the dealer before making a decision so I went with the safe option.

Price.

Boge and KYB are approx same price for rears, iro £40 each. In my own personal experience, the KYB ones rust like hell after a year of 2, the Boge ones seem to stay rust free.  Hard to say, as other factors like shocks affect it, but I felt the KYBs seemed to feel softer after a few months.

OOPS, thanks Andy, not self levelling. :y For some reason I couldn't get the ZF site to accept 'enter' inputs, either on IE or Waterfox. :(

I've just had a very interesting chat with Matt at AllGerman. He tells me that much OE stuff is made by Suplex, and would recommend their springs. He rang ZF while I was on the phone, and said it appears that the Boge 25-964-0 are to be discontinued by ZF who have none in stock. He also recommended Kilen and Leisure Force (same company). A pair of Suplex rear springs for my Estate would be £134 delivered. However I have tracked down a pair of the Boge via Camberley AF for somewhat less off their trade card. I'll post the actual price when I get them.  :y

I have now removed my old springs, but the BOGE 25-964-0 listed by ZF as the correct ones for the TD Estate, are 25mm shorter than the originals. I am sure they will fit, but I have no wish to reduce my ride height. Useful comments welcomed. :-\ :-\ :-\

unloaded length of springs do sometimes grow over time, as the spring loses its strength.

Have you I.D'd the original springs? Are they rough road/heavy duty or whatever? Should be two letter ident printed in them. Someone with epc should be able to give the relevant description.

Mine came with a ride height a good 20mm higher that any other car at one of the oof meets a couple of years back. The springs where reluctant to come out due to the increased length. And where not standard.

Just scraped the dirt off, and they are marked LO. :-\  Also having done some searching I have found a length for te correct springs as 275mm.  These BOGE are 275mm, so I am now happy.  :y :y :y
