Title: Router hacking by neighbours!!!
Post by: cd 2.2 on 04 March 2014, 00:35:41
I'll start by saying  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

I have new neighbours (who happen to be council tenants next door to my private house and I know that they are not all like this), they asked me for my router password when they moved in to which I politely told them to "F" off!
My fibre broadband was installed on the 19th Feb this year and since this point they are constantly attacking my router  >:(

They are bombarding the router with DOS Land attacks (denial of service) which is making it like having dial up when it's bad! This I know is a criminal offence under the misuse of computers act of 1990 but the police are less than helpful as are my isp. I have changed the ssid of the router to "PoliceInformedStopHacking" and stopped broadcasting the ssid at the same time (before changing the name), but still the attacks continue  >:(

Now short of going around there and getting myself into any trouble while telling them to stop it, What can I do about the situation? I know for fact it's these lower forms of life doing this as I know everyone personally in my broadcast range and they are suffering the same issue ... It only started when the new tenants moved in to next door. And the guy there is known in this area for doing this  >:( Council not interested as it's apparently not anti social behaviour ???

Cheers Graham

Cheeky barstewards !! you dont say which ISP it is but I am sure they can set up better security or Firewall on your router but probably charge you for it nowt worse than asbo fodder for neighbours been there B4 took us 6 months to be rid of them set up a neighbourhood watch commitee  approved by local plod after several meeting with them & local council eventualy put enough pressure on landlord to take action but you will need a lot of commitment and backing from other neigbours + keep a log of all attacks etc between you .If they are private rental tenants might be worth looking into dont envy you mate your present problem could be just the tip of the iceberg.

When we had problems of noise and kids running through gardens, I got the neighbours of our Crescent together and we sent a list of the problems to the local MP and  Councillor and they put the Housing Area Manager to tackle the problem. Following a meeting with us she went away promising to write to all the tenants from the estate which backs onto our gardens and visit those outlined as being the worst offenders. She left us her contact details and the problems went away with the exception of one family,  she warned them with moving the case to the legal department for action if they continued with their loud music  and unruly offspring. It worked.

I feel sorry for your problems so I would suggest the Local Councillor and Area Housing Manager along with your neighbours who are suffering the same problems :y

Have you tried filtering the MAC address?  Use a PERMIT ME, DENY ALL approach. A bit of a faff getting the MAC addresses of all your devices but it might work.  Otherwise you could try switching the wireless off altogether and going wired only until they lose interest. (If it was me I would then plug in an electrical device that was 'faulty' and spewed out lots of RF @ 2.4GHZ.....)

When they think they have won reuse WiFi with a truly hidden SSID, change the MAC address of the router if you can and enjoy.

A quick search on some hacker forums suggests using a way of shielding.   There are paints which can be expensive but tin foil is apparently very effective but needs applying in a way to shield the neighbours and yet allow your devices.

Another good idea was to use an ALFA card as a honeypot.  They arent that expensive and could be a way of making them think they are winning. Just make sure it's on a very different channel to the alternative AP you setup (with different MAC, hidden SSID, etc)

Leave the current router up for them to play with, disconnect it from the internet and go wired, as said.

They'll soon get bored. My only worry is what they'd start on then.  :-\

Any option to change the router MAC address?

Ah, the joys of Reaver / backtrack  / Kali ::)

Right, this is what I would do .................

1/.  Go out and buy a router without a TPS button on it.

As Guffer says, if you have a old computer or laptop somewhere, buy a Alfa AWUS 036H antenna. These are about 15 quid delivered from China and are very good  ;)
Plug your old router into the mains but not into the phone socket.
Switch on the old laptop / computer and plug in the Alfa.
Link the Alfa to the wifi on the old router and leave him to it
If you can adjust the old router ping rate so it shuts down after for say 30 minutes / 3 wrong passwords then do it  ;)

Also note that some routers wifi is still active in the background even though the settings say its off  :(

Its should be noted that IF you know how to use the above software properly, it can be used to attack back  :-X

Or if all else fails, drag him outside and give him a good  :-X :-X :-X

Just beware that even though what the neighbour is doing is illegal,  attacking back is also illegal.  If experience with the law is anything to go by then if you attack back you will get pinched.   Stay legal, gather evidence and hound the police until they do something about it.

If your router allows multiple ssids. (Unlikely if its a freebie ISP one.) Set up a spare and limit it to 100k or sommat daft And let him use that.  Slightly giving in but could help in the long run.

Sorry .. everyone had used up all the useful suggestions already ;D

Given we can't see next doors router if his van is on the drive, depending the local geography, blocking with tin foil might be simple to do. If they can't see it, job done.

I've a 1000 volt Mega if you want to drag him out, tie wrap him to a chair and test the insulation / resistance between his gonads  ;D ;D
Much cheaper then tin foil and much more entertaining  ;D ;D ;D

Place your router in front of you. . . .

Concentrate really really hard . . . .

Imagine what you would like to do . . . .

There ya go !

Allow them to connect, then hack them back, bet their devices are not very well defended  ;)

Think that through... they know how to attack your router but don't know how to defend against it... really :-\

That's a bit like saying 'i can drive a manual, but only know how to change up...' ;D

You'd be surprised  ;) 'Knowing how to attack' eg DOS is a piece of pish, it can be as simple as pinging the fek out of something with large packets.

Thanks for the replies guys  :) I know that they are noobish idiots because they are using DOS attacks in the first place .... I have thought about torching their house but it makes me as bad as them! First it was drug dealers and now it's internet wannabe noob hackers  ;D

I have an appointment to see local plod today @ 5:30pm so I guess that's something, And to be fair if they do nothing about the situation then I don't have many options left other than running cat5 cables all over the house and turning off the WiFi. means I can't use the tab any more though

Friend of mine had all this a while back, cant remember exactly what he did, but in a nut shell configured his router as a Hot Spot which showed the M15 Website as a the Landing Page. soon stopped.

Do you know what port this traffic is on you can then disable this using port fowarding also disable IGMP to stop snooping pings & no need to use miles of cat5 cables can use paired powerline adapters I have a couple & no problem with security so far. ;) ;)

That's a rather great idea.  I might just do that as a honeypot ;D

I was thinking about that and the MAC address issue, MAC can be spoofed easily and you can randomly jump ports which would mean switching off all but the ones you need for Skype, HTTP, etc which gets pretty annoying 12 months down the line and you forget that you had done that and tried to install a new programme  :-[ ::)  ;D

No, that's not how you DoS. That most likely would have zero impact.

Latest firmwares on the accesspoint (I assume the DoS is to the AP, rather than directly to router via Internet) may help. As would a better quality AP.

Sure its a DoS, and not just poorly chosen channels chosen?

With my limited knowledge, if I wanted to deprive my neighbour of his internet, I would simply cut his dropwire  ;D
He could still use 3G, of course.

Any joy from the plod, I doubt that they'll do anything so ask the bloke once nicely to desist, if not just slap him. If he's a big bloke get a mate to do him. :y ::) ;D

I'm slightly concerned, given that my computing knowledge is somewhere between "zero" and "can download vast amounts of pornography until his computer explodes" - my idea was going to be to plug into the router instead of using Wi-fi, yet some learned folk have already suggested it! Maybe I'm not as useless as I thought! ;)

Title: Re: Router hacking by neighbours!!!

Police actually took me seriously  :o
They went to the persons house, they told them that they had received several reports in the area and they were to cease all suspicious activity as they faced up to 6 months in prison, up to £700 fine and if it was to continue that their equipment was to be taken for further investigation!

Result has been for all hacking attempts to stop and I've also been helpful enough to tell them that it was me that reported them and any further attempts would be met by me "showing them how it's done" lol  :D

one very happy me
