Title: Omega Register/List
Post by: Lagondanet on 27 March 2014, 21:45:52
I have my anorak on.
I frequent a couple of other car club forums and they all have a register or list of member's cars (Chassis/engine/reg no.'s etc).  I know a lot of Omegas were produced but does such a list exist and if it doesn't should it?  I admit to having a bit of a (victorian) obsession with lists which perhaps goes back to my childhood car spotting and number collecting. Was I a sad and lonely kid?
What do you think?  Are there any other anoraks on here?

Sounds like a lot of usefull info there, for the wana be car thef, ringer, cloner. Not the sort of infomation I would be posting up on a Public Tinternet.

I hear that all the time.  But don't accept it Zirk. No addresses. In fact no names just forum titles. Wheres the harm.
Get your anorak on.

Where is the harm?  :o

A list of chassis numbers and reg? In a nice easy to loose list.

No thanks  :y

It would just make it easier for someone to use your reg. and clock up speeding/parking tickets or commit crimes that get traced back to you...causing a lot of unnecessary headache IMO. For that alone I would advocate it is a non starter (unfortunate for those who have genuine interest in lists etc..)
Out of interest which forums have these lists on?

Tunnie/Radar

Interesting replies and I respect but don't share your opinions.

If I post my chassis, engine, reg numbers how exactly will that be 'used' as suggested?

A quick digest of the chassis number and/reg in the wrong database would result in security/key/radio codes etc being released, and you can request registered keeper details from the dvla...

Doesn't take a genius to add that together :-\

Dont you have to be the registered keeper to get info from DVLA/elsewhere eg. vauxhall?

And with those details you could soon become the registered keeper......... :-X

Sorry but I am still not convinced and think you are paranoid. However I will wait until the Shiraz has dissipated before answering more fully.

As many posters deliberately obscure the registration plate on any photo's they upload, simply to reduce the chance of "cloning", then putting up that info, along with chassis numbers etc etc. is pretty much doomed to failure IMHO...

Whilst I don't obscure photo's - I believe there is a much chance of a "cloner" seeing a car "in the flesh" and noting the number - I totally understand that point of view... I certainly would not add my information and make it even easier for some of the "chancers" on t'web to clone my details.

It's an idea, but not one I will partake in, however, you may find others more willing than I .. :)

I'm a member of the TR Register, who hold that sort of information on members cars - its held securely though and certainly not available on the internet.  Agree not the sort of info you want to make available to all and sundry ::)

It's not chastisement, but merely pointing out the risks of posting VINs and Regs online.

I work in IT Security and part of my work is Social Engineering.  Having access to VINs would be a massive score for someone with such skills and mal-intent, thus too high a risk to be considered without some sort of managed technical solution which would take resources to maintain.  Such information could also become under the auspices of the Data Protection Act (once you go past the 250 record mark) at which point the database should be registered with the ICO, controls and measures put in place, etc, etc..... a lot of work for minimal benefit.

I would suggest that the other forum of which you speak has perhaps not fully understood the implications or they have already put a transparent layer of procedures in place which would seem to be easy to implement from the outsider's point of view.

In short, a nice idea but I doubt it would have traction here  :y

It could go something like this...

Minifreek - 1999 Facelift Elite

Just username and what version Omega...

Over on another forum I frequent a lot there is a GSi register where the list is

For example

Minifreek - Preface GSi - MSD123456   as all Vectra GSi's have a unique number given to that vehicle when converted from a SRi V6 to a GSi V6 by MSD conversions...

Like so?

2001     Y985 MTM     ELITE V6 AUTO     3.2     SALOON          BLACK     LAGONDANET     SCRAPPED 2011

but I know some don't like to expose their reg.  ;)

Cut and paste?

PM me your reg, and I'll PM you back the last 3 digits of your VIN, just to prove that having one makes it easy to obtain the other ;)

If you insist on continuing with the 'register', I'd suggest making it into a spreadsheet or similar, which is hosted somewhere. (ideally securely) People can add if they wish, or one person can manage it.

Having number plates in plain text on a forum, in bulk, for forum bots/scanners to easily pick them up is a bit silly  ;)

OK. I will manage it. Anyone interested PM me details. My last shout on the subject.
