It's not chastisement, but merely pointing out the risks of posting VINs and Regs online.
I work in IT Security and part of my work is Social Engineering. Having access to VINs would be a massive score for someone with such skills and mal-intent, thus too high a risk to be considered without some sort of managed technical solution which would take resources to maintain. Such information could also become under the auspices of the Data Protection Act (once you go past the 250 record mark) at which point the database should be registered with the ICO, controls and measures put in place, etc, etc..... a lot of work for minimal benefit.
I would suggest that the other forum of which you speak has perhaps not fully understood the implications or they have already put a transparent layer of procedures in place which would seem to be easy to implement from the outsider's point of view.
In short, a nice idea but I doubt it would have traction here
