Title: Do NOT Believe it!!!!! Then again.....its a BMW
Post by: Crazycarzowner on 21 May 2014, 20:41:54
Well the love affair with the new Beemer lasted long - NOT!

3478 miles in and "Drivetrain Malfunction" then on the main screen "Drive moderately, maximum drivetrain output not available"  :o :o :o :o :o

Here we go again  ::) ::) ::) and its not the first, one of the other nic's has had the same fault - new transmission after 7500 miles or so!

Bring back the Volvo's!!!  :D :D :D :D :D

Wish they would... that would make the entire Commodore range viable ::)

Not lasting long are they  :o

Odd, as I'm not exactly gentle with them and I've never had any issues with any of mine, and I've had plenty of them.  :-\  My son's mate has one as a chauffeur car and it's covered almost 400K, having had the gearbox replaced at 265K. His previous one was traded in with 365K on the clock.  :y
He drives like a test pilot (when not chauffeuring), and he manages not to break them.  ;) ;) ;D ;D

Mates e39 has done 270k. Its on its third auto box.

But it is chipped. He'd rather replace the box than do without the chip ;D

People need to make good comparisons, comparing a 10 year old+ BMW with the types of the last few years on reliability is a fools game.

So what models are we talking here JasonM? As he's looking to replace his 10+ year old Beemer with a newer one.

While he's a bit of a plonker going for a Beemer in the first place IMO. I wouldn't wish a disaster on him.

I was also wondering if plod chip their cars. But stopped wondering when realising the importance of the warranty. :)

I should add I made the statement above as we are all easily led on 'marketing'.

Audi is a classic, they market build and reliability yet real world results are average to lower half of the table.

Mercs are another, 15 years ago they were bullet proof, then came the late 90's and 00's and they were bloody terrible.

We know BMW have big issues with engines at the moment, particularly of the 'oil' variety.

V8  and V6 were evaluated. But due to import restrictions, and the arrival of the Monaro,GM decided the VXR brand was a better bet, financially.
We all know that the GM product would have been more reliable (see jasonm) and cheaper to maintain but branding is the market...

The market is, essentially, completely uncaring about cars.

(Tries to think of a viable angle to persuade me otherwise.....  No can't.)

People just believe what they are told. For example. We have a car. Its paid for, It just needs maintaining, fuel it, and keep it legal. Mr Media pops up, saying road tax is going up. Ooh noooo, what are we all to do?
We all go out and spend way more than the tax hike on a newer car. But that's ok, as it has cheaper road tax. Pay the difference in rfl, all be it begrudgingly, keep some cash, and drive the car you actually want to own.

But maybe that's the thing. This "car you actually want to own" isn't that. It's just a car. It has seats and a steering wheel. To quote our favourite pikey film.

Generally speaking, people don't give a rats arse about what car they drive. Just look at Beemers, and anything French. ::) by that I mean, there's no real requirement in what they want. Its budget, then wait for a marketing tool to take us in whatever direction. Oh, ok, I'll buy that car.

Most odd IMO. As buying a car is the second biggest purchase we'll ever make.

This affects us as omega owners, as the car/brand replacement we want (mostly) isn't available in the uk. Vastly due to a big heard of sheep and BS.

Yep, agreed. People have no grip whatsoever on what a car is costing them, and are completely un-savvy about the whole thing.

I am fully aware that my motoring is costing me probably £3500 a year in fuel. Insurance, depreciation, tyres, road tax, the odd repair - all pretty much irrelevant in the overall scheme of things. Yet people whinge when they have to pay a couple of hundred quid on consumables to get an otherwise decent car through the MOT for another year "more than it's worth", etc. and fall straight into the hands of the next advert they see on TV.  ;D

Then again, you have to consider the cars that are being sold to the average punter these days. Going out and buying a new tumble drier is probably more exciting. ::)

So what models are we talking here JasonM?

Our new ones are the 530D Twin turbo saloons, just reading some of the Beemer posts and in the US there's loads of the same kind of fault. They've cost ££££ and quite a few have returned them to the dealer.

Ours aren't chipped as they are quick enough (when they work) they come straight out of the box from BMW & they won't let our mechanics touch em other than routine servicing. The only thing they allow is removing the limiter & they do that.

So the diesels have a limiter fitted,155mph as per normal I suspect, who said diesels are smelly and slow :D :D ;)

I've read a few of those and there does appear to be an issue. 'Drive-train malfunction' is a limp mode message and could be related to a number of things.  :-\ Some people think it's the high pressure pump but others are unsure. Bmw should get on top of this quickly as it will cost them sales.

They do shift though don't they.  ;) ;) :y

Yep, limited to 155mph.  :y
I've had both petrol and diesel in the E92 coupes and mid-range the diesel is quicker. In fact, mid-range it will hang on to an E92 'M' up to legal motorway speeds.  ;) ;) Even their own figures don't dispute that.  :y

E92 Straight six diesel 0-60mph is a tad over 5 seconds and limited to 155mph, but mid-range is almost 2 seconds quicker than an M.  :y Having had experience of most of them, I now choose the diesel.  :y
