Title: Thank you Marks DTM Calib
Post by: TheBoy on 16 November 2014, 20:27:34
For a spot of welding, identifying a possibly/likely reason it uses almost as much coolant as fuel and swapping that pesky seized caliper that I had failed to undo a week or 2 ago :y

Top guy, as always :y, and thanks to Mrs DTM for keeping me in tea all day :)

How bad was the rust? Bad enough to need welding obviously, but as deep as expected?

Pretty localised, cut out and a 3mm plate welded in.

Thanks for the labouring this afternoon whilst I threw a few blocks down

It had an adviso a couple of years back, about time it was sorted  ;D  :-[

As it happens, once tapped out with an educating stick, not too bad, but was holed.  Mr DTM made light work of it :y

You are, of course, most welcome. Can't beat a little bit of good, honest graft :y

Oof rises again. How was the water pump diagnosed ? Presumably finding a bunch of coolant peeing down on the splash tray thingy?

A telltale sign of dampness on the cam cover made MDTM slacken the aux belt showed that the pump spindle was like a cock in a sock.

Pretty easy to spot the water pump issue, coolant was appearing a lot on the front of the sump area and running down the side.

A tell tail sign of wetness on the cam cover around the water pump

Then a case of check for play......of which there was plenty.

We also lifted the plenum to inspect the valley and stat for leaks etc and all was nice and dry there, there may be further leaks potentially but, the pump needs replacing as a first port of call.

As is always the first port of call with a water leak......use your eyes and check around the system for signs of water.

Is it OK to give the car a proper spanking with the waterpump in that state?

Obviously, absolutely saying anything other than YES  :-[

Being near both gas and petrol, I can see why TB wasn't keen ::)

No risk there, a good few hundred mm from any serious pipes......plus the gas was turned off at the tank, well it is TB!

Iv also just found a hole in mine too.... didn't know it was there until i removed the rear bumper on Sunday and put a finger or two through the wheel well... Gonna have to get that sorted before winter gets here properly. Also have a hole in the opposite side too which needs a good seeing too with an educating stick, grinder ad my MigWelder will be giving it what for LOL
