I can't feel any indentations with my fingers but my windscreen is quite badly scratched.
Are scratches easy to remove?.....or do I need a new windscreen?
-
Not that I've ever had it done, but I believe that it's possible to get a screen polished .......... I think I'd tend to hope for an 'accident' to occur ......... ::)
As might happen to my Smart soon ........... ::)

An omega is a rolling (sometimes) accident. ;D

I must check out the windscreen protection on my insurance policy. ::) ::) ;)

I must check out the windscreen protection on my insurance policy.
£75.
-
Saw some guy on You Tube doing his screen with some very fine steel wool than glass polish. ???
-
Watched the old man work on some reasonably deep scratches on his Omega side glass, with varying grades of wet n dry, moving to cutting compounds, brasso, polish etc. After several hours, and there was a large patch about half an A4 sheet in size, which was finely scratched and opaque/'misty', and the scratches were still there.
I am the first person to suggest 'mending, rather than replacing' but for the sake of a stone chip sort of appearing on your windscreen, and the excess, I'd vote go insurance company, in this case. :) By all means give it a go, if it's the cost of come cutting compound which may come in for other jobs, (eg headlamps, maybe?)

Yep. Spot on.
They tell me they won't /can't repair a scratched screen. A replacement is therefore needed. This should not affect my NCB.
What is the usual price to have a new screen fitted to a Vauxhall Omega.
I'm guessing £150.

MOT is also due. ......and if the the tester is a 'picky' bastard. :-\

Some time ago, I worked for a double glazing co, and one of the things that was supposed to 'save a lot of money' according to some genius at HO was a glass polishing kit. This looked like a posh angle grinder/mop with a number of different heads and compounds. As we had a large amount of damaged sealed units, we tried it out. Nobody who had a go with the thing managed to make any scratched SU any better, and most were much worse.
The really daft thing about it was that it was only larger toughened sealed units that were actually expensive.

You mean without insurance?
Autoglass will quote you somewhere around £700
A local glass place might get that down to about £350
-
I've got this issue when the V6 gets MoT'd - or before, as the screen is cracked in a couple of places. So it's either ring Mr Insurance man, or acquire a screen and fit one myself (guy up the road break Omegas and I know someone that can remove screens without damaging them) and glueing them in in apparently very simple, just buy the right bonding stuff. Personally might go Insurance option, as you know it's done right, then.
As said, paying private it's going to be outrageous money.

£75 doesn't seems so bad now.

I paid about £140 a couple of years ago at a local glass place. :y
-
Down here the heat reflective, rain sensing screen is £200, Standard is £130 :y
Obviously the insurance version is £75 all day long regardless of screen type :y
-
I'd be weighing up putting up with a scratched screen against letting the average muppet from a windscreen company work on my car, TBH. :-\
Most seem to remove the scuttle cover with a crowbar without even noticing the little clips. ::)
EDIT: I do have some glass polish which I've found useful in the past. Glass is hard as bullets, though, so if the scratches are more than just tiny surface scratches, nothing will touch them.
-
Part of the reason when mine gets done, I'm debating doing it myself - or at the very least getting everything off, before Mr Windscreen man appears. I've also got some rust round the top of the screen to sort before another sheet of glass goes in. Off topic, but I know what you mean - I tend to hover like a mum that's just dropped her firstborn off on their first day at school whenever anyone is touching my Omega :y

Got all the kit here to remove a windscreen :y

From memory don't they clean and treat any rust around the windscreen when fitting? Certainly seem to remember that they did on at least 2 of the windscreens I have had replaced.

The good ones probably do, yes. If you're watching... :-\

You would be very very lucky even removing the slightest scratch from a screen.
Like NickW I also worked for the same bunch and used glass polishing kits etc with little success. The theory was to use a pink powder called jewllers rouge which was then applied with a mop headed electric polisher .This would ,in theory flatten out the mark.
Truth was a usual rule of thumb was to replace ,as only std 3/4mm glass would allow even the slightest hairline mark to be removed.Once glass had been toughened it was not possible.
Stump up the insurance excess and get a new one fitted :y
-
I suspect the polish I have used just fills the scratches with wax. ;D It does improve matters, though.

Not too hard to scratch though ;D

bullets get scratched as they're fired... so hard as bullets, like 'e said :y

The expression might as well be soft as toffee... ::) bullets generally being made of lead, which can be dented with a fingernail :y
-
Haha. Well, I just nipped into the garage, dug out the old Webley service revolver, and popped out a round - gave it a chew, and now chipped my tooth. I demand you pay for the dentists bill!! It's not soft as toffee at all - and tasted orrible, too :y

Expect the Credit Card was a Titanium Model ;D ;D ;D....no such luxuries at this end of the country..only cash and not much of that ::)

Only the inside of bullet is lead these days the outside is copper, but again soft enough :y
If you really want to f%$£ someone up you get rounds with a ball bearing inside the tip of the round :-X

They have offered to fit a new pair of wiper free of charge. No labour costs. :y
However there is a charge of £28 for the wipers. :-\
Needless to say I declined.

If you're going to the trouble of hollowing the points, I guess it makes sense to fill the hole with shrapnel ::)

I expect a man of your social standing has a seperate credit card for everyday of the week and several spare Platinum cards for other mere triffles like cars/holidays etc. ;D

How do they treat it in a single visit? Do treatments not have to dry etc?
-
Hoping so - would be great if I got all the rust sorted 'all in' the price (well, the £75 excess) - though would prefer to do it myself. As you say - what about the drying of such treatments?
-
They remove the old screen, clean the aperature as required, then prep the new screen giving time for things to do what they do, then fit the new screen...
Any surface rust in the frame only requires flatting back and treating with Kurust or similar prior to being covered with sealant/bonding agent as the new screen is fitted :y
-
I was asked by the girl if my car had a tinted screen. She wanted to know if the tint was green or pink. ??? ??? ???
She also had trouble finding reference to 'Omega'
A long silence was followed by "I can find a Vauxhall Astra and a Vauxhall Corsa but not Omega". Nice girl ........the sister of 'Tim nice but dim'. :)
I think we got there in the end.
Do all models of Omega have exactly the same screen specification? I imagine the poverty spec GLS uses left over glass from the garden shed. ;D ;D
-
Six choices... heat reflective or not, tinted strip with auto wipers or not, heat reflective with auto wipers or not.
Most are tinted strip only, but auto wipers were a later option... think heat reflective was Elite only :-\

Fair enough, I just expected such things as rust to be the owner's responsibility, sort of thing. Good news, then, saves me a job! :)

No....and I'm glad.
I had them on the CLS.
