Scratched windscreen.
« on: 20 January 2015, 14:36:43 »

I can't feel any indentations with my fingers but my windscreen is quite badly scratched.

Are scratches easy to remove?.....or do I need a new windscreen?

Not that I've ever had it done, but I believe that it's possible to get a screen polished .......... I think I'd tend to hope for an 'accident' to occur .........  ::)

As might happen to my Smart soon ...........  ::)

Watched the old man work on some reasonably deep scratches on his Omega side glass, with varying grades of wet n dry, moving to cutting compounds, brasso, polish etc. After several hours, and there was a large patch about half an A4 sheet in size, which was finely scratched and opaque/'misty', and the scratches were still there.

I am the first person to suggest 'mending, rather than replacing' but for the sake of a stone chip sort of appearing on your windscreen, and the excess, I'd vote go insurance company, in this case.  :) By all means give it a go, if it's the cost of come cutting compound which may come in for other jobs, (eg headlamps, maybe?)

Yep. Spot on.

They tell me they won't /can't repair a scratched screen. A replacement is therefore needed. This should not affect my NCB.

What is the usual price to have a new screen fitted to a Vauxhall Omega.

I'm guessing £150.

Some time ago, I worked for a double glazing co, and one of the things that was supposed to 'save a lot of money' according to some genius at HO was a glass polishing kit. This looked like a posh angle grinder/mop with a number of different heads and compounds. As we had a large amount of damaged sealed units, we tried it out. Nobody who had a go with the thing managed to make any scratched SU any better, and most were much worse.
The really daft thing about it was that it was only larger toughened sealed units that were actually expensive.

I'm guessing £150.

You mean without insurance?

Autoglass will quote you somewhere around £700
A local glass place might get that down to about £350

I've got this issue when the V6 gets MoT'd - or before, as the screen is cracked in a couple of places. So it's either ring Mr Insurance man, or acquire a screen and fit one myself (guy up the road break Omegas and I know someone that can remove screens without damaging them) and glueing them in in apparently very simple, just buy the right bonding stuff. Personally might go Insurance option, as you know it's done right, then.

As said, paying private it's going to be outrageous money.
