Title: With idiots like this .....
Post by: Entwood on 23 January 2015, 09:54:32
it's no wonder that more and more restrictions are placed on motorists ..

unfortunately he/she will take someone else out rather than just doing the gene pool a good turn...

impressive.

As was impressive last week, when I was nipping down a side street, about to emerge onto the main road, this was just gone 5pm, icy roads and dark. A parked car to my left (in a row of parked cars) simply started to move and pull out no headlamps or sign there was anyone in the car, and no indicators, of course. My ABS cut in. Just ridiculous.  >:(

That's pretty unbelievable.

Was sat last night behind a VW Golf at the lights (on red) when all of a sudden he just went........ while they were still red  ??? ??? ???

He slammed on his breaks for a car going passed then screeched away. Very lucky and for what? 20 seconds of time saved!  >:(

A bit amazed as driving standards seem to have got worse since winter set in - I've never noticed it this bad?

We probably all squeeze an amber here and there, but seen about half a dozen drivers running red lights lately, often in extreme cold/potentially icy conditions.
-That guy pulling out no lights on.
-Saw someone couple of days ago in the Asda car park just start to pull out (again, no headlights on - it was pitch black at that time) for anther car to have to brake pretty sharpish. Blatant disregard for other drivers. Then...
-Yesterday I clouted my head pretty hard, but had to still drive home from work. Had a couple of mins rest (my girlfriend is a student nurse, so was able to check for concussion etc) but felt I'd had a couple of pints of fairly strong ale - sort of light-headed, merry feeling. Concentrated on the roads like a chess grand master, but as I went down the shopping street, was mostly blinded by a driver with main beam - to see something sort of 'shimmer' in the gloom - as the oncoming car's lights started to wane in their intensity, I was able to see a bit clearer - a pedestrian walking across the road, not glancing in either direction as he did so. 15 feet from a crossing.  >:(
-Which brings me onto main bloody beam... WHY does anyone do it, in crystal clear, fogless conditions?? Dazzling everyone else, or am I being prudish - perhaps this is an example of society - "I can see a bit better in the dark, I'm ok. Stuff everyone else" Maybe I'm out of tune with the times, but then there's...
-foglights. I'm starting to form the opinion that they might as well be banned on new cars, as they seem to serve no purpose but for idiot drivers to switch on as soon as it gets to dusk or enter a tunnel, and on the 2 days a year it is foggy, about 50% of the vehicles I see with them fitted don't switch them on!
-Bloke pulled onto a roundabout last night, the road to the right you can see for about 100yards - and a rapid response ambulance, with blue lights on, was perfectly visibly coming at speed, he clearly didn't see it, and as he/she realised, panicking tried to pull over, and mounted the kerb and probably scuffed both nearside alloys while doing it. Stopped, half-blocking the exit the ambulance needed (Octavia Estate) - has it been a Renault Master or whatever, it couldn't have fitted, might have even ended in a minor collision. Basically, they never bothered to look to see if anything was coming to their right. How can you do that on a roundabout is beyond me. It's fairly important, really.  ::)

This is all in the last week!!

They got there comeuppance... in the interest of balanced reporting, they neglected to mention the unmarked police car behind it lit up like a Christmas tree ::)

Not defending their obvious stupidity, but looks like that snow had slid down from the front of the roof, probably after braking, in which case the driver is probably in a bit of a panic :-\

Moral of the story, always clear ALL the snow from your vehichle before setting off :y

I saw a fella come off the M25 at J11 this morning.  Nothing unusual there, you say..

Well J11 has two lanes of traffic going up it, the right hand lane was a long queue with the left hand lane empty.  There was a gap about one car long in the right hand lane.

Numptyman comes from the inside lane of the M25 (with a lorry up his chuff by this point) at a 45º angle, at about 30mph, between the one car gap somehow missing the front offside of the rear car and rear nearside of the front car, skewers into the left hand lane of the junction in front of me and tootles off up the junction.. ffs.

The truck nearly hit him, he nearly took out two stationary cars and seemed entirely oblivious..

It's a looped two second video clip, entirely without context... might have been like that for miles, might have just happened :-\ if the latter, put yourself in their shoes...
You're in the outside lane of a busy motorway and suddenly you can't see... wipers are frozen to the screen, what do you do? Stop? Panic? Or do you ease up, collect your wits from your smalls and try to get to the hard shoulder... ::)

Disagree .. its a 15 second video run twice ... watch the gantry in the background. The speed of the vehicle does not change at all throughout the 15 seconds, despite there being gaps to his left and blue lights behind him. He/she actually overtakes the white van and stays there, when they had at least two options... to pull in behind it or to pull in after overtaking it.

I would not be in that situation as the car would be clear before driving away. If a problem occurred then ease up, hazards on and move across, NOT keep driving blindly.

People not indicating on roundabouts really gets my goat.  >:(

You'd think it would be reasonable to assume that someone not indicating would be planning to go straight across the roundabout.  I think that most times I have made this assumption, I've got it wrong and the other driver is actually turning right.  ::)  Of course it's my fault for pulling out in front of them!  :-[  :-\  ;D

Assumption is the mother of all roundabout accidents!  :D

Ok, two seconds was a slight exaggeration... ::)

Barely past the white van at end of the clip, with no idea of what is in front of it... point is how you or I might react to that situation is irrelevant, people simply aren't taught how to deal with situations like this. Common sense is no defence as not everyone has any...

Why are people defending this nutter? Firstly they were recorded on dashcam for 3 miles, and continued for longer. All this "what if it just slid off the roof" business, I follow with "do terror m their wipers not work?". No defence for this at all. If you suddenly can't see, hazards on, gradually slow to a stop changing lane to the hard shoulder if possible
Title: Re: With idiots like this .....

Not indicating on roundabouts is inexcusable, but it is much better than the idiots who indicate the wrong way. That's something that I see a lot, and almost guarantees an Oh shit moment.

The real cause of most of these problems is that far too many drivers don't realise how dangerous 1.5tonnes of metal at 30mph actually is. That makes them complacent, and they think that driving the car is a background task that isn't important. Unfortunately, this is so common that I doubt there is a cure for it.

Regardless of any / all of the circumstances, it is the drivers responsibility to ensure their vehicle is fit to drive on the public highway, therefore in my book, the driver didn't do this before setting off however and whenever the snow covered their windscreen.

And now for my Jeremy Clarkson moment...  :D

Does anyone else play the 'guess the car intention by the maker' game? By which I mean - if you see a car on a roundabout, with its indicator on right, this suggests that the car is intending to stay on the roundabout for the immediate future. However...

-if it's a Ka or a small Kia, then the car's direction is likely to change at any second, unexpectedly.

-If no indicators are used, then it's a BMW - unless it is indicating - in which case the car is about to turn in the opposite direction to which the indicators suggest. Also remember Audis are to be regarded in the same manner - no use of indicators.

-If you see a Meriva coming, then you have plenty of time to get on the roundabout, exit, and possibly make a small sandwich, the Meriva will still not have actually made it to the point of entry. For some reason they are always going much slower than they appear. This used to be the preserve of the Mk 2 Micra, before then Metro driver and previously to that Nissan Bluebird.

-Golf GTis, now this is interesting - if it's a Mk 1 or II, it will be driving skilfully and will indicate as per the highway code - if it is Mk III, then we've a half-way house, possibly good, possibly bad. Take note of wheel size - the larger the worse driving. Mk IVs and Vs are driven by people who don't realise they own a GTi, they got it because their brother told them to buy a Golf. Mk VIs are driven exclusively by estate agents who are hoping to graduate to a BMW or Audi one day.

-There is an unwritten code of conduct - for some reason fellow Vauxhalls let me out of side roads etc.. one assumes they are paying due deference to the best car Luton (well, Russelsheim) ever made and wish for myself to progress unhindered. Possibly Omega taxis think I am another taxi  ;)

-Exception to the Vauxhall rule is green Corsas with white stripes, wheels and door mirrors. They don't have any awareness that there are other cars on the road, they just thought that the roads were built especially for them. These unintentionally use roundabouts as a brief way of showing other road users and their passenger an example of how lift off understeer works. They will consequently be dumped by text shortly after driving that week's female companion off back at her parents' house.

-Any Hyundai features their left indicator permanently on from the factory, after several thousands hours the bulbs blow, thus rendering them apparently the same as other road users, but beware, now 50% of their indicators are non-functioning they may appear to be a pseudo-BMW/Audi driver. This they are not. They are simply concerned that they know they have to be at the Clinic, but don't know if it's a Wednesday or a Thursday. And will be doing 29.8mph on all roads, in all conditions.

-Current model Range Rovers are fitted with a two-stage cruise control system which means they do 40 mph round town and 80mph on motorways and nothing in between. Any obstacle is simple run over, and changing lanes is done immediately and without fuss, nor indicators, it is simply assumed that as every other road user is most likely a member of the working classes, who probably don't even own any land, they will get out of the way.

-Range Rover Evoques don't move. They are installed by the Land Rover dealerships outside Bistros, Health and Beauty Salons, Wine Bars, and Coffee Shops, on the driveways of anyone whose front porch has non-functional neo-classical white columns and a staffy bull terrier eating the remains of a Gucci purse; and any bar where a sandwich costs more than £8. Contrary to the brochure, only 4 Evoques were fitted with engines and tested by the Press. As I say the ones you see are simply hollow fibreglass mockups or engineless decoys.

-If the car is less than 4m long (so superminis, citycars etc) and has more than 3 large dings or scraped sides from bollards keep at least 45ft from it at all times. If someone can't park a car that size, they are incapable of driving at the speed they are doing competently. Indicators will be used, but only accidentally, and the brake lights will These are also found parked on corners, the yellow zig-zag lines outside school, over fire hydrants during a housefire, on yellow hatched areas at junctions, anywhere illegal. Because they will apparently ''just be a minute!" and that you should "Chill!"

If I've missed anything please feel free to add to it. It's the only way we will learn...  :y

Inappropriate use of headlights aghhh! my current bugbear.

Poorly aligned dipped beams that dazzle oncoming drivers.
One headlamp out. Can't be arsed to change the bulb. I'll use main beam instead.
Using main beams against traffic on a dual carriageway, but that's fine because the oncoming traffic has a whole 6' of grass verge between your bulbs and their rapidly desensitising retinas.
Not realising you have main beams fitted, meaning that you can't see far enough in front to do more than 25 MPH on a clear A road at night.
Not realising you have main beams fitted, nor that your husband was using them last night, hence the blue light on the dash that you haven't even noticed.
Not realising you have headlights or that it's dark (delete as applicable).

FFS! It's hardly difficult. >:(

I was behind a dawdling Transit the other night on an unlit country road. We'd just driven out of a 40 limit (he'd been doing 35 at best, but the road is twisty) and his speed never altered in the now 60 limit, so I overtook. The reason why he was dawdling  ??? .... he was driving on side lights  :o :o  presumably his dipped were both u/s because when I got a suitable distance infront of him, his main beam came on!  ??? ???

Never said owt about defending this individuals actions... ::) Having had wipers freeze to the screen whilst travelling at speed, I can sympathise with the predicament is all... Ok their reaction to the situation wasn't great, but at least they didn't totally lose it and stop in lane three to deal with it... Quite agree that it should never have been an issue in the first place :y

I'm slightly concerned with autolights, as all cars I've driven with it seem to be a bit slow to respond (IMHO, anyway). But such feature can be turned off/overridden :)

I find auto wipers frustrating, usually to eager to wipe.  In the case of the Omega, further annoyance that there isn't an intermittent wipe.

The only car I've driven long enough to get used to it with an electronic handbrake is an early Insignia.  Like lane changing indicators, you get used to it after a while, and miss it when you don't have it :y

Technically you should be prepared to stop if required at ANY giveway line, although when joining a fast moving carriageway from a slip road, you should aim to match the speed of the traffic flow and filter in ifand when safe to. You have no right of way.

Its beyond belief how many people think they have the god given right to just enter a motorway, and always blame the bloke coming up fast on the motorway towards them for not letting them in. As Al said....you have no right of way !!!!.
I think it is respectful to drivers entering a motorway, to, if possible and safe, to move over into the middle lane, to allow them entry. But that is not always possible. Seeing some of the antics of the drivers entering the M3 at Basingstoke, heading towards Hook, last week was frightening in the least. The amount of yards they travelled before installing themselves at high speed into the outside lane could be counted on one hand. Absolute total madness >:(

Unfortunately/fortunately depending on the car you drive headlight brightness isn't an MoT issue... lights can be as bright or as dim as you like... provided 1. They are correctly adjusted, and 2. that they are equally bright or dim.

So provided the beam pattern at rest is correct, a 6V MK1 Beetle is no more or less unroadworthy than the latest Audi or Merc.

Omega with halogen bulbs... fair to middling.
Omega with xenon bulbs... pretty damn good (with good lenses).
Merc with Dynamic xenon and led combo... pretty king amazing.
Insignia with halogen bulbs... woeful.

Apparently the halogen lights on the Astra J are woeful too :-\ Brother has tasked me to find some better bulbs for SILs company Astra GTC... adaptive xenons were about the only option not ticked... brother specced it for her, and the 120 mile round commute in the dark is really starting to annoy her ::)

Might try a set of Nightbreakers in the Insignia and see what they think before getting a set for her car :-\

Can't be any worse than the stupid bint who nearly put seven people in hospital by failing to stop at a giveway earlier >:( Pulled out about five feet infront of me without looking/indicating/braking :o

Only three things prevented me from driving straight into the side of her...
1. I saw her approaching the junction, and it was pretty clear that she hadn't looked or braked.
2. She turned left from my left so was travelling the same direction once she pulled out. If she'd turned right I would have ploughed straight through the drivers door.
3. There was no oncoming traffic, which gave me room to swerve.

I should have reported her really as I got absolutely no sense out of her and from her face she was somewhere near Neptune >:(

Bowels and spleen vented (I don't call too many people 'King blind retarded Tuesdays' to their face), I was relieved simply to have missed her...

On the plus side, no one was hurt, the Insignia passed the elk test with flying colours and I got a £15 tip. Which was nice... 8)

Few minutes later as I was returning home[been out dog walking]on same road, same conditions a white Adam with no lights on at all!!Then yesterday lunch time another blue clit on a dual carriageway in the inside lane approaching roundabout began indicating left and took the third exit!!!!

We are having a good moan tonight aren't we?................ ;) ;)

Personally I am getting to the point of not liking to drive in the dark, it's country roads mostly round here, and some of these modern headlights are so bright they dazzle even if dipped, how they pass and MOT beggers belief................... :( :(

I am totally with you there, mate. I hate it at night, especially on the road to our tin tent....the road is like a roller coaster. What with full beam on, and bright lights coming at you over the rises, its a nightmare !!!!! >:(

They bleddy Darzet local yokels ey Tony?  ::)  ;D

You can laugh, Steve. They call it the 'Rat Race' up here, but struth...down there on the A31 and A35 is manic.
And you have over your fair share of boy racers ;)

80mph down a dark twisty country lane is a right of passage when you're 17/18 Tony!  ;)

80mph down a dark twisty country lane is a perfectly way of getting from A to B (at 3 am)  ;)
Indeed.

These nutters just want to jump in and turn a key , nowt else  :( auto lights auto handbrake auto wipers auto everything ::)

Touch of jealousy?? - although I've turned auto lights off as they can be a bit of a pain.

I watched an E220 autopark the other day. It did a parallel park. That was impressive  :y

I wouldn't say the auto lights on the wifes megane are slow to respond. In fact, they're a bit too sensitive. Pull under a canopy to fill up or drive into a multi storey car park and the driver in front gets a shock.  ;D

We have a narrow lane with passing places from here, leading down to the A40. Its called Cock Lane. On Saturday, my fiends were going down said lane, when a young man came belting down the other way, saw them, slammed on the brakes, went up the bank, into the hedge and over onto the roof, stopping inches from my friends. Luckily, no one was hurt, but.............

Evidently, the lad got out and exclaimed he was at fault going too fast. He said he was seventeen, and he had also written off his first car !!!!!!!!!!!   Whaaaaat !!!! Was more interested in using his phone to call his mates and have a laugh, even though the police were in attendance, as the road was blocked. What they were going to charge him with was mimiscule.

So....he must have passed his test, been insured, etc. But if he was only seventeen, he could not have had many lessons before his test, and to write off two cars in that time...unbelievable.

The road lived up to its name Saturday, because he was a right 'dickhead'

Sigh...

Sadly making insurance very, very expensive, does deter a certain number of young drivers - but crucially only ones who can't afford it. If you/your parents are able to pay the astronomical insurance (and as you say - given that he'd already been in an accident at 17, God knows what his premium must've been) we're kind of only getting rid of half the problem, wealthier drivers high premiums just isn't/never will be a deterrent. That's guy is clearly a chief cock, and doesn't care about other road users - but he/his parents have clearly got the income that can stand the 'penalty' of a higher premium. And then you've got every week in our local paper, some guy done for having no licence and insurance or tax, so he gets three points on a licence he doesn't have, and a 'fine' of £150...  but, erm.... that doesn't even cover the cost of the tax he's dodged, let alone the insurance. Surely, by definition the fine should be on top of the cost of the tax and insurance he's evaded.

Aware I'm probably being crass and unfeeling, but I kind of hope he actually gets killed doing what he's doing - thereby hopefully saving someone's life.

DBG....I sadly have to agree with your last part of your comment. My friend was in bits....she (and her hubby) thought the end had come when the idiot went up the bank and momentarily airborne.
And shame to say, I have uttered that in the past, when some idiot has gone streaking past...'I hope we see him round the next corner splattered up a tree as long as no-one else is involved'
It gets you like that :(

PS....I agree with the rest, too :y
