As we know counterpart licence is no longer required, just had a request from insurance company,to supply them with details
Driver number,Ni number and postcode, I think not as this gives them FULL access to my license details, I haven't got a problem with giving them the check code to use but not full details.
you have been warned.. 1981 has started :(

or even 1984 ............. ::) ::)

Oh leave him on his satellite P! ;D

That sounds dodgy. To me the most they should ask for is the '3 day hire car code'. This confirm to them the categories and points you have. Why should they need anything else? Although I'm not sure if there is anymore information in your full login over the code?
In fact would the NI number give them access to your government gateway account? Scary.

And before you know it access to medical records, so they can charge more for life\travel insurance.

There has to be data protection issues with that. :-\

I don't know, because you have given them the details they need and signed the form. Its a new area, needs looking in to, by government. But wont happen :(
-
I wouldn't give an insurance company my NI number. The system before relied on trust between the customer and insurance company and there is no need for that to change in my opinion. ::)

Yes there is, they can only ask for certain details if there is a need. In this case there is no need and another means of giving access to the information without compromising your Government ID account.
There could be something in the small print about by giving them this information you are also consenting that they access you Government ID account and all data within, if there is then it would merit an ICO investigation.
-
you need a persons NI number to do a free on line check on the government website but I thought all insurance companies have access to DVLA records for a fee?? :y

The actuall wording is
By providing us me with these details, you are giving your consent to care out identity check for your and others security and protection for onecalland the dvla to check your personal details including you NI number with the DWP and HMRC to verify your identity. This information will be saved on your insurance policy for futre reference. Tick to agree.
-
And there's the thing. By having to use your NI number there will be a lot of cross checking between DVLA, HMRC and DWP. ::)
Possibly not a bad thing in some instances. ie someone on benefits having a Bentley registered in their name. ;D
-
It isn't government agencies checking,on who you are its a private, company who's only interest is fleecing you of money, promising to pay out then using underhand tactics to not payout,..

There is no need to provide it to the insurance company, they have other methods of verifying your identity. Plus I would be concerned that they would be selling the NI info on to private databases of identity information.
-
The question is .. which insurance company wanted the details?
You know, so we know who to avoid..

Already answered.

Ohh .. I didn't recognise them as an insurance company :-[
Must pay more attention.

It's to do with this...
https://www.abi.org.uk/Insurance-and-savings/Topics-and-issues/Insurance-industry-access-to-driver-data
http://www.mylicence.org.uk/mylicence-number/
though why they want your NI number is beyond me. The system is currently voluntary for both you and the insurer, so you can tell them to poke off, but they can equally charge you extra if you don't supply your driving license number, or even refuse to insure you.

Maybe they want the NI number now to ascertain that you`re working & a UK citizen as declared on the initial insurance proposal :-\
For use in verifying my current driving status, I`ve already complied with a request from my employer to agree that my details are passed to a third party. I did question it to some length, but with 70+ potential users of the company fleet I had to agree. If I had refused, then my inability to drive their vehicles would have had serious issues re. my job.
I`d be interested to discover if anyone else has found themselves facing the same request from their employer ???
-
Only answer I could find by Googling was this:
http://www.paidtoshop.co.uk/archive/index.php/t-59057.html (http://www.paidtoshop.co.uk/archive/index.php/t-59057.html)
Which seems a bit presumptuous as they and you don't know if there will be a claim in the future. I would certainly ask the question on why they need your NI number as their terms may allow your details to be sold on by the company. :(

I lived in Vietnam, an undemocratic, paranoid 'communist' one party state a few years ago and as a foreigner my landlord used to come round and collect my passport every 3 months for 'registration' purposes with the police. ::)
I don't know why but this NI thing reminded me.... :-\ >:(

This country is the same now, but they use the words "terrorism" and "national security".
