insurance request beware
« on: 15 June 2015, 21:45:41 »

As we know counterpart licence is no longer required, just had a request from insurance company,to supply them with details
Driver number,Ni number and postcode, I think not as this gives them FULL access to my license details, I haven't got a problem with giving them the check code to use but not full details.
you have been warned.. 1981 has started :(

That sounds dodgy. To me the most they should ask for is the '3 day hire car code'. This confirm to them the categories and points you have. Why should they need anything else? Although I'm not sure if there is anymore information in your full login over the code?

In fact would the NI number give them access to your government gateway account? Scary.

And before you know it access to medical records, so they can charge more for life\travel insurance.

I don't know, because you have given them the details they need and signed the form. Its a new area, needs looking in to, by government. But wont happen  :(

I wouldn't give an insurance company my NI number.  The system before relied on trust between the customer and insurance company and there is no need for that to change in my opinion.  ::)

Yes there is, they can only ask for certain details if there is a need.  In this case there is no need and another means of giving access to the information without compromising your Government ID account.

There could be something in the small print about by giving them this information you are also consenting that they access you Government ID account and all data within, if there is then it would merit an ICO investigation.

you need a persons NI number to do a free on line check on the government website but I thought all insurance companies have access to DVLA records for a fee?? :y

Tick to agree.

And there's the thing.  By having to use your NI number there will be a lot of cross checking between DVLA, HMRC and DWP.  ::)

Possibly not a bad thing in some instances. ie someone on benefits having a Bentley registered in their name.  ;D

It isn't government agencies checking,on who you are its a private, company who's only interest is fleecing  you of money, promising to pay out then using underhand tactics to not payout,..

https://www.gov.uk/national-insurance/your-national-insurance-number

There is no need to provide it to the insurance company, they have other methods of verifying your identity.  Plus I would be concerned that they would be selling the NI info on to private databases of identity information.

The question is .. which insurance company wanted the details?

You know, so we know who to avoid..
