Hiya guys just a quick question, I'm thinking of putting a 3.2 lump into my 2.6 manual estate I have, am I right on thinking the gearbox is going to line up correctly ? I am using my manual box. Also if I use the 3.2 ecu will that work correctly as the 3.2 is auto box and my one is manual box. Thanks
-
You will need these parts for the engine from the mail dealer but check the part numbers are correct before handing any money over ;)
Spigot needle bearing 90105743
Spigot nylon bush 9157141
The 3.2 engines ecu will need a reprogram via a Tech 2 afterwards to get rid of the fault light but it will drive okay until you get that done.
The 2.6's ABS / TC ecu may need a tweak via a Tech 2 so that it knows it has a 3.2 under the bonnet.
-
Thanks alot for that, so basically all the tweaking can be done via tech 2 and should not need a full ecu re map? ( I know you basically just said that but I'm just making sure I'm understand it right lol)
-
Use the 3.2 ECU, immobilser ring and key chips... ideally also the car pass for the engine, and swap the loom from the 2.6 to the 3.2... Electrically they are the same, but manual loom has only reverse switch loom to gearbox, whereas auto one will need modifying to fit the manual reverse light switch,(auto one is switched through selector and also has an extra plug by the battery) :y
-
yeah but i'm keeping the manual box so as i prefer a manual over auto so i shouldn't need to swap over the looms. if i'm thinking this right :)

Current set up:
2.6 engine
Manual fly wheel.
Manual box.
2.6 loom
2.6 ecu, immobiliser, key chip.
New set up:
3.2 engine
Manual flywheel
Manual box
2.6 loom
3.2 ecu, immobilser, key chip (ideally plus car pass for reprogramming chips for all your keys.)
Hopefully as clear as can be made. :y

yes mate cant be any clearer than that, thank you very much. now just need to find a 3.2 omega somewhere :D

if you want have 2 or 3 good 3.2v6 engines here

o yes but how much would you like for one?

The ECU's from a 3.2 Manual (Ex Police) do have a different Internal Map compared to the Standard 3.2 Auto ECU, wither it was a Police thing or just changes to a generic Map to suit the Manual Gearbox for the 3.2 weve yet to discover, but as Al says changing or modifying the Looms will sort out the gearbox side.
Probably easier to get hold of a 3.2 Estate and put a Manual box in it, imho. Probably need to sort out diff ratio as well though.
Were the 2.6 Manuals and 3.2 Manuals same diff ratio?

According to brochure, both 2.6 Manual and 3.2 Auto use a 3.90:1 diff so will be fine as an engine/drivetrain combo. Won't quite have the top end of a plod 3.2 manual, but will be a smidgen quicker off the mark... be looking at about 2900rpm at 75mph :-\
Officially diff ratios are:
2.6 Manual 3.90:1
2.6 Auto 4.22:1
3.2 Manual 3.70:1
3.2 Auto 3.90:1
-
ah i see so in the future might be worth getting a manual 3.2 diff then i see

I wouldn't make it a priority ;)

yeah i wasn't going to, although how hard is it to change diff seals on half shafts? i'm a mechanic so skills are there just not the knowledge ;D

Six bolts, and some leverage to remove/refit shatfts, sealks pry out and are lightly pressed in, so pretty straightforward :y

ah usual stuff then, that's good also i'm assuming elites were not lsd just a normal diff? if so what oil does it take as vx dealer told me they have no idea.. ???
-
EP90 from memory, but might be summat in the FAQ section, or in Haynes :-\
LSD is a bit of a Holy Grail item... great to have, but you're really gonna struggle to find a decent one...

So 2.6 / 3.2 Gearbox must have different final ratios then? Ive no idea as only play with 3.0 / 3.2's

I would budget for one, will probably need to come from a 3.0 Manual (3.7), driving a 3.2 Manual with an Autobox diff (3.9) will drive you mad on Motorways, been there done that.

All Omega (UK) Diffs were standard, LSD Diffs were only fitted to Police.

well i should be fine then as i am currently in a 2.6 manual and want to put 3.2 into my manual so the diff and box is still from same car and in the same car only engine would be from 3.2 auto

Not quite, as the gearbox ratios are different, which will give a lower road speed for any given rpm.
Good for traffic lights, not so great for long journeys...
For reference, my 3.2 manual was about 200 rpm lower at 75 ;)

I always thought all the R25 / R28 manual 5 speed boxes had the same ratios ?
It was just the diff ratios that was different across the engine ranges :-\
-
R28 ratios: 3.95 2.19 1.39 1.00 0.84.
R25 ratios: 3.81 2.11 1.34 1.00 0.76.

So a R25 box and a 3.9 diff will go, pretty dam quick :D :D :D

Just under 18.5 mph for every 1000 revs in 4th

Just under 18.5 mph for every 1000 revs in 4th
So what would I get in 5th @1000 revs with the above setup :-\
I remember my old 3ltr would sit quite happily at 30 mph in 5th with a R25 / 3.7 diff :)
Off to Serek's for the conversion in the morning, then onto Marks place for a tech 2 chat before home :y
Looking forward to taking the A /B roads on the way back :D :D :D
