Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 20 November 2016, 12:17:05
Can't be long now.

Another Daewoo perhaps, in a fetching shade of green?

Astra 1.4 sports tourer. You make it sound like a 1930 Henry Birkin  Bentley. ;)

Time is moving on. Pretty soon you'll have trouble remembering your own name. It's time to be decadent and irresponsible. :)

Talking of whippets, I saw some one taking their ferret for a walk earlier, well I think it was the other way around really....ferret went were it wanted, owner followed it......bizarre sight  ;D

Fashion is a fickle mistress.

Twenty years ago we would have said that the Maxi was a prime example of poorly engineered, poorly executed shite, put (thrown) together by a bunch of slovenly hairy-arsed midlanders who had no interest or pride in their work.

Today it is  £3295 worth of 'Britain at it's best'. :)

We should just be very thankful that only four remain

Crikey, didn't think the Maxi was still made that late.  What a crock it must have been by then :o.

But what were other manufacturers chucking out around then?

BL - as well as the Maxi, all sorts of shite, from All Agro to the TR7
Vx/Opel - Shitvette. 'nuf said really.
Ford - Cortina, but redeem themselves with MkII Escort.
Citroen - GS
(just for Imber) Talbot - the forgettable Solara (I could see Lord Opti desiring one :P)
Datsun/Nissan - Sunny and Cherry
Fiat - Strada

What a shit time for cars!

In 1980 the Vauxhall equivalent of the Maxi wouldn't have been the Chevette - a decent handling but very underpowered car - but the Cavalier sportshatch, which was a pretty good car all round, and light years away from the Maxi.

One of my uncles, tried to sell me his 3.0L Monza .... about 30yrs ago it was iirc about 4 years old then....back then he wanted, I think 8k for it....he owned a VX dealership....his son gave it him new for his retirement....it had a number plate of A65 LAD....I was told that his son who took over the dealership had to give the other dealer a freebie Caviller to get the plate  :y

My mother had a Solara, in a tasteful brown and gold colour combination. Like most 70s and 80s cars, the main thing that strikes you when you see one now, is how are modern cars so big yet so cramped inside? Like all variants of the OHV Simca engine, it sounded like someone had dumped a big tin of mixed bolts into a cement mixer; but being an 1100 stretched to 1600 this one sounded like they'd  recorded the racket and were playing it back at double the volume.

I can't imagine how a Cavalier sporthatch was the Maxi equivalent? The ordinary saloon certainly was.

The Maxi ran from 1969 to 1981. Quite along production run.

Not quite sure which Vauxhall it would have been up against in 1969. Victor?

I'm not sure if this (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252644524066?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&clk_rvr_id=1127304841358&rmvSB=true) was Vauxhall's answer to the Maxi, but with a bit of a polish it would be ideal for Uncle STEMO's new car!  :y

The number plate's ideal for the old boy and he could transfer it when he upgrades to a Marina!  :P  ;D
