Just popped into sainsburys garage, noticed some 5w30, fully sympathetic, Dexos2, £3.30 per Litre, so bought 6, will do for the Vivaro or the Large arsed Insignificant.
So might be worth checking your local Sainsburys Garage ...

Thanks for the heads up :y
As an aside, is there any reason I can't run 5w40 fully synth in the Mig, particularly in summer months? It was 18 euros for a 5L can at the Cepsa in Gibraltar, I put a few in the boot!! :y
-
I know 10/40 is recommended, but that some run on 5w30. So, a 5/40 seems logically like it'd be ok?
It's somewhat of a rhetorical question, because ran back from Cartegena to England on it ;D
-
5w30 is a bit on the thin side unless it was run on it from new...

Why would it matter what it has previously been run on? I don't think it's got a memory...
It'll be fine. It's all I ever ran my 3.2 on.

Mine was always on 10w40, but I switched to 5w30 when my local VX garage had it on offer and it leaked like a sieve... Back to 10w40 and it didn't... :-\
Might be coincidence, but...
-
Right, 5w40 going in for the next change then, no balls no glory, thanks chaps :y
-
My last omega had been on 5/30 from its 2nd oil change, Had been VX service until I got it, Sold with 142000, no leaks,, previous one was ex-met, I used 5/30 in that no issues.

Used to ask my friendly garage if they would give me 5 litres out of their big drum of oil for a tenner. I had to pump it out obviously, that was in the days before everyone went all officious and now refuse you to even walk about in their workshops for "insurance purposes" (
so you can't watch them poking holes in your car at MOT time)!

Every car in the uk used to run on garage big oil drum oil. That was in the days when tolerances were measured in inches not nanometres. ;D
-
There's an old garage near Mirfield in West Yorkshire that dispenses a known excellent quality oil in whatever quantity you want. You take the containers, choose your oil spec, and a few pumps later, it's yours at a fraction of the cost of buying the exact same make of oil from any motor factors. For me it's worth picking up a few gallons if I'm passing on the M62......

All but one of the oil changes I did on my Omega used semi-synthetic 10w40 out of the 200litre drum at work. All my other cars got the same stuff too, including the Avenger, 2.9 Capri, 525, Legnum, Morris 1300 and anything else that came my way. Before that, I used whatever we ordered for the fleet of Transits.
There needs to be a good reason to obsess about oil beyond the suggested grades, and most engines don't justify it. I certainly wouldn't be carting several cans of an odd grade back from Spain just because it was cheap....
-
We haven't had a decent oil thread for yonks! :y
Or a white goods thread... :-\
Gotta love a good white goods thread! :)

I don’t think 5/40 fully synth is that odd a grade … and why not if there is boot space and it’s a fraction of UK price? Am only talking a few cans not a truck load. :y
-
Seems quite pricey to me for 5l for a non diesel engine oil JamesV6CDX. Even the stupid expensive stuff for hers is only about £60 for 4 x 5l.
-
I have absolutely no idea what oil goes in our engines. I take it to the local garage, he does stuff to it and it comes back with a fresh MOT and the oil thingy saying 100%. ;D

After using up all my bulk buy Vauxhall 10/40 semi synthetic oil, and now needing a change of the stuff in my Omega, that has always been given it over at least the last 11 years, I phoned my friendly Vx parts manager.
He told me they no longer do the Vx (used to be GM) oil of that grade, but they now recommend a 10/40 semi synthetic named Euro...something or other. £37.07 for 5 litres, although I will get a discount on that.
Does anyone have any thoughts, comments or knowledge of that oil please? ??? ???
I have a HBV, breather clean and Cam Cover Gasket change to do over the next week, so I might as well do the oil at the same time. Don't want to do all that, as I have many times before, but I have to due to cost limitations. :P

I have just found this Opel GM oil from Autodoc:
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/opel-gm/14429902?utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&tb_prm=20315908947&gshp=1&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIq_-M1bDoiAMV7KNQBh1ewyh8EAQYASABEgLT_fD_BwE
Can this be correct?? Is this Opel GM oil still being produced? I thought the GM connection was now dead! :o :o ::)

Well, I will now find out about this oil as I have ordered 10 litres from Autodoc, who I have an account with. ;D ;D

Well looking at the pictures and descriptions it looks like the right stuff, possibly they've got a lot of old new stock to shift.

Yep, that’s what I think. Does anyone have insider info on this? When GM cast off Opel and Vauxhall, was there a massive oil stock somewhere in Euro land? :( ;D ;)

I've used Smith Allan oils for a good number of years, and their auto transmission and gear oils too with no problems.
This is actually slightly better (newer) spec than the GM you've found - and cheaper....

Newer being API SN / CF spec rather than the GM SL /CF ...

Thanks for that. :y
When the Opel GM oil runs dry I will try that :D
-
Any 10w40 that meets A3/B4 should suffice.
That autodoc stuff is horrifically expensive :o. I pay half that for the BLOODY expensive shit her car needs!!!

The oil I am buying from Autodoc is cheaper than from Vx or other suppliers when branded with recognisable names ;D. In fact I have found Autodoc very competitive, and even more important they now have the parts, and other supplies, for my Omega that others, including Vx, no longer have available, like the oil from them that they once stocked. I reckon £66, including delivery charges, for 10 litres of the right stuff for me is a good deal.
It was especially right as I won £66 on the National Lottery on Saturday which exactly paid for it! Some things are just meant to be!! ;D ;D ;D

Well, my 10 litres of "Genuine" GM 10/40 oil came through from Autodoc, with hologram, bar codes and Opel reference labels, very well packaged, that I have used for 11 years:

Never asked it before but after seeing other comments about certain letter references to the oil, what do these, that were on my other UK GM oil mean? :
ACEA A3/B4;API SL/CF
-
Just ordered 10/40 semi Mannol for mine.
£15 for 5 litres.
Also got hold genuine oil / air / cabin filters from various ebay sellers. Nowhere near as cheap as the old TC used to be, but those days have sadly gone. ::)
