My catera wont stay started it shuts right off everytime I try
To start it been sittin for 3 months. I changed the ignition lock cylinder and
The ignition switch. I was wondering could it be the fuel filter
-
Have you swapped your immobiliser chip over from the old key? Try holding the old key next to the cylinder and starting it ;)

It's worth doing to eliminate it, mine was doing something similar a while back, It's a fairly easy job :y
-
....the fuel filter I mean :-[
-
Typical immobiliser symptoms ;) I'd put my 1p on the op not swapping the chip over when he fitted the new barrel ;)
-
The new key I have it has a chip in it too and I held the other key
Next to the cylinder and still the same thing. And the new key and cylinder
Came with a black thing around it what is that for some type of sensor
-
Im sorry but whats 1p and op

1p = a penny
op = original poster ;)
So. You swapped the transponder ring over too?
I would suggest refitting your transponder ring (the black ring) and moving the chip from the old key to the new one :y ISTR that the chip, transponder ring and immobiliser ECU are all linked :-\
-
I havent exactly changed the ring over yet or the chips ???

So you still have the ring that was fitted to the car fitted? If so, try getting the little chip from the old key next to it
-
I tried that and it still didn't work and I tried the new 1 and that didnt work.
I forgot to mention the car been sitting since may could it have
Bad fuel
-
If the car starts and if rev'd immediately stalls try unplugging the MAF sensor. If its OK then you need a new MAF ;)
-
Were is the maf sensor located

Standing in front of car, front left, follow large oval pipe from air filter down - its the first plug on that pipe you come to. Just take the plug off and try starting it. If it starts and runs you need a new MAF sensor ;)
-
I found it ima going to see if it works
-
It still didnt start :(

Just to sum up.....
the car has a matched engine control computor, ignition key transponder ecu which is attached to the column AND a chip in the ignition key. You must have all of these fitted from the original car to get it to start and continue running.
If you need to change the ignition lock itself, then re-fit the original transponder to the column and install the car's original chip in the new key.
what happens with the yellow light on the instrument pack. If the engine stops immediately due to immobiliser issues, i think it should be flashing.
I have a car that did this, one which had an extra GM alarm fitted. If you tried to start it before the immobiliser "handshake" was completed, the engine would start and then stop immediately. The trick was to turn on the ignition, wait for a few seconds for the handshake to be completed and the light to stop flashing and then start it. The solution was to remove the extra alarm.
