Title: i might be in trouble when the missus gets back.....
Post by: Gaffers on 09 October 2011, 16:27:57
The house smells.like a brewery.

Elderberry and blackcurrant port on the go in one fv, another batch of weissbier in the other.

Plus the kitchen smells of the hops and Orange peel I was boiling.  I love it hut her indoors hates it.

Plus I have started work on the all-grain system  :y

Oh well it's worth the agro  ;D

I'm trying recreate and slightly improve the last weissbier I made.  It seemed to he popular at Newent.  It was intended for Christmas but it didn't even make September lol

Well the port is intended for next year but I may sample a little this year.  I can't do it all as it is intended for after next years 'extended holiday' in the sand :y

Do you want a dozen barrowloads of ripe sweet white grapes?

Free but you have to collect them. A Spanish neighbour had them last year but I have never got out of him whether his wine was a disaster or so good he didn't want to share it. I suspect the former..........

Varche - I would love them but I cannot collect.  Just don't have the time.  Next year is a possibility as I will have a lot of time off in November.

Baron - just take any elderberry recipe and add 20% blackberries and between 20-30% more sugar.  I have a bunch of unused elderberries here if you wish.  I harvested too many.

Mine is almost ready for its' first brew. HLT, mash tun, wort chiller and boiler are ready. PID temperature controller is built and tested. Just need to cobble together a few plumbing fittings and pot the temperature sensors in epoxy.

Been buying your 10w40 in those 205 litre barrels? ;D

I heard a rumour that the home brew shop have an open day this Saturday coming. Discounts, etc. apparently. Nothing on their web site though.

Ignore that. Right date, wrong year. ::)

When I was making home brew my ex used to say that the place stunk like a brewery, and like a good husband I agreed with her opinion ::) ;)

I hope you've got a decent ring main in your garage. ;D

Joking aside what's the highest I can out through a single and adaptor? :-\

Joking aside what's the highest I can out through a single and adaptor? :-\

Socket outlets are normally on a ring main rated at 32 Amps so that is the maximum you can pull through a ring main, with the load distributed around the ring. I believe a double 13A socket is specified to safely give you up to 20A with neither socket loaded to over 13A. Probably best that it is on the ring and not spurred from it if you're going to do that.

What is the rating of your elements?

I'm guessing they are either 3kw elements in which case they will take as near as damn it a full 13A, or around 2.2kW which is pretty much 10A.

So, a pair of 2.2kW elements should be safe on a double socket outlet, a pair of 3kW elements less so, although you might get away with it. The third element I would try to run from another ring main, if available, or from another socket on that ring main, well separated from the first one, so that the load is spread.

Beware that garage circuits, etc. are often fed from a spur rated at 16A.

Also beware that extension leads are often not rated for the full 13A, and any that are will need to be fully unwound.

That's the official line. Unofficially.. I'd try to find out how the sockets are wired so you don't overload anything, check that no socket outlets or any of the wiring you can get access to is getting worryingly warm and play it by ear..

I'm guessing you won't need all 3 elements flat out for a 90 minute boil, or whatever. You can probably drop it back to 1 or 2 elements once it's boiling and save leccy and minimise evaporation in the process.

I'd be happy to cast an eye over the installation and give you my thoughts if you like?

They are 2.2kw elements and the chap was saying that he only used 2 of the 3 elements to get a rolling boil and then one to maintain.  I'll check on the garage feed, as there is the freezer in there already I may have to look at the laydown or just switch off the freezer for an hour at a time.

More. Than happy for you to POP round and have a look if you wish, its a pretty impressive setup.  The mash tun looks fantastic, all metal, although I may have to make a sparge arm for it.  He said he begets needed one he just recycled the first runnings into the tun on the mash and the sparges (note plural :P)

You'll be fine with just 2 elements.. unless it's on a 16A spur or something.

Nice to have a bit of redundency in case an element fails with that much wort in it. :y

Now a really nice setup would cycle the heat around the elements so none of them ever get hot enough to get that horrible sugary coating burnt on. Hmmm  ;)
