Title: Lost Key - with a twist! Car now marooned! Help!
Post by: jtypecav on 30 October 2011, 15:49:17
Hi all,

Currently have a sticky situation. My step mum borrowed the MV, lost the key and has now flown home (ex-pat) and left it in a public car park (by my work).

It is the only key and I know I don't have a car pass for it.  It is probably OK for about a day or so maybe a couple - but I do need to get a solution urgently. Assuming the key is gone for good, how would you progress?

I know I could apply for new CP from my stealer and get a new key (or two!) cut, but I'm worried about the time (and the cost) and the circling parking enforcement!

The car is in Bristol and is in a vulnerable (if free) position by my work.

I know there are other 'key' threads, but perhaps not as time sensitive as this one!

Andy

your a bit cream knackered here, carpass will allow another key to be programmed, but I don't think they hold the actual blade settings, not sure you can get another cut, might have to fit replacement barrel  :(

Either way think you will be smashing a window to get in  :'(

I'd be a bit angry at anyone who borrowed my car, lost the keys then flew away!

You may find a breaker on here, with a full set-up for sale, i.e. keys, ing barrel, ocks, ECUs etc. Sounds a bit of a rave, but cheaper than the other options.  :-\

You're all making this really complicated!

Why replace the lockset, which isn't easy without having the key, or particularly cheap.

A decent automotive locksmith will cut and code a key for about £150, while you wait.

Job done.

Without an original to copy?

They also won't be coding a key without carpass  :)

Nick, That changed the tone of this post I was about to make from a **** to a "if needs must.."

I've seen this place - http://www.lockcity.co.uk/auto-locksmiths.html  who are based in Bristol. Will give them a ring tomorrow.

Was having a nightmare imagining it having to smash windows and get it recovered home lifeless..  :'(

OK, less positive sounding now! Although Don't mind paying for another car pass. I thought there would be a physical key blade number on that pass too? Or am I mistaken?

Need car pass, to get going. That will allow another to be programmed,I cannot remember if car pass has the details on the actual blade itself.

I'd get the car pass, buy a keyfob, not sure where you are, but an admin here might be near you to code it.  :y

That will open it...

Then either get a new key cut, if details available (Vx will be super expensive for new blade I should imagine)

getting car pass can take time though (hence mentioning smashing to get in) depends if you can leave it there while you get another fob coded up.

Car pass will have immob. code for fob and key code for new key to be cut

You can order a new key from Vauxhall, you will need a car pass first though.

If its ir type, immobiliser might be bypassable temporarily.  If rf, need a new transponder programmed, and a mechanical blade

Nope. That would be pretty insecure on a modern design ;)

By the time he's paid the specialist charges to do that, then a new key is still the way to go. Which is necessary whatever else happens.

Thanks for the replies so far all, something to go on thankfully.

Should add, it's a facelift on a W.

Suddenly the front 12v ashtray / draw not working seems the least of my worries!  ;D

OK, update time(!)

* Vauxhall can supply carpass and single key for £150 plus vat. But say that I'll need to get the car recovered to them to have the ECU brought into line with the transponders on the new keys.

* The keysmith guy I spoke to last night said this wasnt neccessary, but he could do it if it was reqd!

Any thoughts?

If, as in his advert, he can get the necessary codes required would it not be quicker (maybe cheaper) to use him :-\

Hmm. I'm not sure how he's going to get anywhere without a key to clone or a car pass. Even then, he'd struggle with the remote fob as they are very much less easy to clone.

Sounds like the dealers are speaking the most sense to me. Get them to get a car pass, then order a key of the correct pattern. That'd at least get you into the car, then either recover it to the dealers and get them to Tech 2 it, get a tech2 to the car, pair the immobiliser and drive the car away, or buy/borrow a paired ECU, immobiliser and chip, swap these over and drive it to the dealers.

OK,

latest from keyman!

* Carpass £30 plus VAT
* Full remote Key £110 plus VAT
* Non remote Key £65

Will the non remote key still have the immob chip in it I take it?

If I buy one new full remote key, is there the experience on this site to clone me another key?

I'm thinking I'm going to have to get one of each just to be safe!

Yes - provided you've got the carpass.

You need a remote (off ebay) a blank horseshoe (with blank transponder - off ebay), and a tame key cutter to copy your existing key - a visit to one of the guys on here with a Tech2 will get your key programmed - a lot less than £110  :y

This sounds good dbug

( Although I'll have to hope I find the right remote, horeshoe and transponder on ebay for that!)

I think that if the above is the case for the additional key(s) what bits should I get the Keyman to do for now?

What I mean is, if I get a full or non remote key from this guy will the new remote, horseshoe and transponder render it a dud?

Sorry for all the questions..  :-\ :-\

Thought I'd update this post. Cost me £140 for a new key including car pass but the car was recovered OK and the new key works great.

The old key did turn up too - in the corner under a pile of leaves and was handed into security a week later!! But it was mangled and although the key guy coded it to the car again the microswitches etc.. are now flaky and I'm not about to pay £80 for another key again! If it is repairable is anyone up for the challenge?! I'd really like another key to prevent this from every happening again..

On top of this, despite her fuel economy I really like the old bus so will also be looking for a few bits to freshen her up and make good for the year ahead!

Thanks for the help on this thread too!

I'm glad you got it sorted in the end without it costing a Kings Ransome  :y
