Title: Cars you don't forget
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 19 November 2011, 21:29:14
One of my most memorable cars, is my first V8 Rangie...

It had the usual issue of saggy headlining inside. I got fed up with it, so replaced it with something "custom". Bear in mind I was 21, and crazy as a bottle of chips.

Ive only ever driven one once. A late L plate V8 and I loved it. A few prods of the accelerator and the whole thing moved and sounded great.  :y mind you took me a bit of time to adjust my driving style in the corners. ;D

The 2 cars i can't forget and really miss (going back 25 odd years) were my Cavalier SRi "B reg" & Astra GTE MK1 "A reg". Both were cracking cars with the 115Bhp 1.8i lump. Both went like bats out of hell, handled great, and was always a good laugh against a 2.8I Capri or XR4i. Best race i had was the GTE against an RS2000 Mk2 going up the A130 to Chelmsford from the A127 (before they added bollards & crap). Won against the RS2000 on the final straight from the A12 Jct up to the Army & Navy roundabout on the sweeping bends. Those were the days.... :'(

my second motor in life.

very similar to the one i had.

looked the same, old but modified. scared the crap out of me and the passenger as we raced along the a45(well known airway strip) at nearly 100mph !!

Tough one. I suppose for me it was my facelift R reg citroen xantia 2.0 16v sx auto in emerald green. At 17 for my first car it was great. Comfortable 138 bhp so was quick and in 2002 still looked a modern ish car. Best part about it were the alcantara seats. On a par with omegas for comfort.  8)

For me it was my second car - a BMW 200Tii, just the thing for a young man about town. :-*

Many years later I quite liked the Granada 2.8 Ghia I bought after going into a fuel station (with a Ford dealership attached) to fill the Volvo 240 I had at the time. ???

I actually filled the Volvo but drove off in the Granada. ;D ;D  I would have kept that car for a while but a security situation meant that it had to go after only a few months. :(

I don't get emotionally attached to cars I'm afraid, although I was quite sad when my MkII GTE went.  Additionally, it was really odd when Project TB2 went :o

For me it would have to be my Sunbeam Tiger 4.2, it was incredible, 125mph at 4500revs, had a few over the years that I can think of all v8's though.   A few sd1 the best being a Vanded Plas. three  Range Rovers, e type jag(that was a six cyclinder) and a pontiac trans-am.
Wish i could aford to run them these days, plus a few would be worth a bob or to.

Old memories from an old git.

My three most memorable cars :-

BMW M535i '78 vintage. The first really big powerful car.

Lancia Y10 turbo. Completely outdid my expectations

Honda NS-X. Again, just the opposite of what I expected.

Honda NS-X. Again, just the opposite of what I expected.

A mate of mine had one of them. Sold it and had a succession of sevens of varying degrees of silliness, then an S2000, all sorts of other stuff. Not sure what he's got at the moment, but he's still pining for the NS-X.

The car I had the biggest lurch selling was, of all things, a wolsley 18/85s. For those not familiar, it was the badge engineered Austin/Morris 1800 landcrab. Big brother of the mini of the era.

Full width leather(ette) seats with magic wand style gear lever and handbrake out the dashboard. Fully reclining seats and no headrests meant it went flush with the rear seat base creating a large enough 'lying down' area for a young gad about town.

It could shift ok as well, for the time. Same engine as the mgbgt with twin su carbs - inch and half or bigger?

It was a wrench when I traded it in for a mk 2 escort, ex swan national hire car- but that's another story.....

If we are including horrible cars, I'd like to put in a vote for my 1986 1.8GLSi Belmont.  Truely awful. And gay.

Hated it before I bought it, now idea why I did.  I would conceed the first engine went like the clappers, the replacement engine was rubbish.

Mine was 'Yolanda' a 1980 Ford Cortina 2.2 Auto Wagon with approx 300,000 kms on the clock bought in Sydney for A$500 (about £250 at the time) and that included camping equipment!  :y.  She had Western Australia plates so had already done the trip across Australia, probably more than once and also meant that she didn't need an MOT!!  :y :y. Yolanda however didn't have a second gear, so the trick was to give her some in first before she slid into third which was fine on the long, straight, and flat outback roads, but a little tricky in cities or on hills....  ::)

Apart from the odd tantrum Yolanda took me and a few Welsh blokes all the way round Oz, and when I left I sold her on for A$800!!  :y Yolanda and I had a lovely time together, and she was usually very forgiving of my generally inattentive behaviour and occasional infidelity  :-[  So there was definatly a tear in my eye upon the parting of our ways.....  :'( :'( :'(

Lancia 2.0 HPE (factory supercharged) what a cracking engine (Lancia tuned Fiat twin cam). used to leave the XR boys for dead.
Thinking about it thats probably cause it weighed nothing due to the amount of missing metal, go to bed at night and the car would be half pound slimmer in the morning, if you looked at it long enough you could watch the rust forming. Big Big negative I know such a shame on a motor that was otherwise a smashing car.

The car I never forget, is my Opel Commodore GS Coupe 1970. Bought it when I was 18 back in 1987. It was white, with something called "mirra" mixed in the clear coat, and a black vinyl roof.
The engine was a tuned and balanced straight six 2,5 litre with two 34/36 weber carbs on it. It was in mint condition, with only 70K miles on the clock.
It was a GTi killer, at least on the straights  ;D

Have no photo of it, but google have ;)
