Just over an hour ago I was rear ended whilst sat in a car park waiting for swmbo to reappear from the shops :(
I actually watched the guy reverse out of his space behind me and then.... "oh oh!", "slow down, slow down! , please stop now!", 'BANG'!! "OH BUGGER!!!" Then as I was getting out of the car he drove off with me shouting after him! WTF!! >:( Luckily he had to stop a few yards away because he was behind another car, so I was able to walk up to him and ask him what the hell he thought he was doing? The bloke was elderly and both he & his wife seemed genuinely not to realise they had hit me although the impact knocked my dogs off the rear seat! I made him come back to the car & check for damage & sure enough the rear bumper had a slight crease in it but the bloody paintwork had large cracks radiating out from the impact point like ripples in a pond!!! But here's the best bit....He said he couldn't see them :o I then suggested he put on the glasses he had hanging around his neck, but he STILL couldn't see them! ??? Imho he didn't appear to be in full control of his faculties either! I'm probably shooting myself in the foot here for when I get a bit more Ga-Ga, but i'm now firmly of the opinion that compulsory testing of eyesight, general bodily & mental fitness and spacial awareness be introduced for all drivers at regular intervals over the age of 65 years! I'm not even sure I want to report it to the Insurance (it's due for renewal next month ::)) as these days they are likely to write the car off and it would be just too much hassle! I very much doubt I would get any joy asking him to pick up the bill himself either! ::) It's ruined my bloody weekend that's for sure! :'(

Unhappy news Phil although good that there were no injuries.
In the circumstances I would have informed the filth as that driver certainly holds the potential to be the cause of further problems (sadly).

think i would have reported it as well...shouldnt be on the road :y

Are you allowed to use such flattering terms?? ::) ::)
I agree though & I think I'd inform my insurance anyway. Make sure your car stays put & the assessor comes to you, that way if they write it off, you at least still have the car & have a bit more room for negotiation ............ possession being 9 tenths etc etc :y

Sorry to hear the news.
To be honest if it was hard enough to knock the dogs off the seat, it must of been a pretty hard knock. He probably drove off quick as he knew he maybe in trouble.
I'd be tempted to tell the police & his insurance company that he wasn't waring his glasses at the time that you saw. If they are perscription made for him to see better for driving and he wasn't waring them, then he could be done for driving without due care I'm sure :o . If he supposed to be waring them for driving and his insurance company found out, they may have to admit liablity on his part and may pay you out.
Worth getting some legal advise. Like I said, if hard enough to knock the dogs off the seat, you can't tell me he didn't realise ??? . Thank goodness it wasn't a small child he hit :o

Should have marched him to the nearest cashpoint and told him to withdraw £200 to cover your damage. Then call the police and give them his deatails and your opinion that he isnt safe to be behind the wheel.
A half blind pensioner in Colchester last year was stopped by the police for driving in a similar matter. They didnt have the power to revoke his licence there and then unfortunately. The next week he lost control, panicked and pushed the accellerator pedal instead of the brake, mounted the pavemant in the middle of the town and killed a teenage girl on her way to school. >:(

Sad indeed Phil, but at least a replacement bumper (if needed) is reasonably cheap and easy to sort ;)

I disagree... Everyone should have to undergo this on a regular basis to keep their licence. Perhaps every 5 years? Including a "Road Safety Assessment" every time for renewal of the licence ;)

Sorry to hear about the bad news , any chance there was cctv watching . Just a thought you could get him caught in the act ;) suprised hes not been caught before if he drives like that :o
-
Any one watching ???
Mrs E's car was hit by an elderly woman whilst parked back in December. First she knew of it was when she returned to the car and a note from another party giving bare details BUT their phone number and the reg no of the offending vehicle.
Reported to Police (not response yet other than a crime number) and to Insurance company even though the damage is probably less than her excess, so no claim filed as such.
Heard last week that the other parties insurers have admitted full liability and the car is to go for repair at no cost to us whatsoever. She even gets a courtesy car for the week :)
And all because she was seen by someone who thought it totally wrong that you hit a parked car, get out and inspect the damage, then get back in and drive away.
So a single witness is all it took. Thank you to that stranger :y :y :y

bad news.. :(
you had to take his license and burn >:(

the proplem with reporting it to the insurance is that your insurance will go up next time.
yes thats right even if you are 100 per cent not to blame the insurance companys look on you as a higher risk for some strange reason.

Totally agree with compulsory tests every five years. Not exactly like the first test everyone took, but a road safety / road awareness test. Should get a lot of crap drivers off the road.

Tests and medicals should be compulsary IMO. You have to take them if you want to keep your HGV licence, so why should it be any different with a car licence? They are both lethal machines in the wrong (or incompetent) hands! :(

I've said this for years ;) It shouldn't focus on things like hand positioning, just your safety on the roads :y A bit like the advanced driving courses you can do
-
You should still report it to the police as he drove away from an accident which if im right is an offence. He really is a danger to himself and others. I have seen many close calls by those of the older generation.

As long as the other driver reports within 24 hours of said incident then no offence committed as long as there was no injury to persons.
Good to hear no injuries especially to the dogs that lost their seating.
I agree with compulsory testing, medical and driving, as for the time frame, well 5 years sounds about right but then if that were introduced, DVLA would want licences changed every 5 years as well and I for one would not want to hand that august body of fine people any more money than they already rob acquire from us.

That is the issue... There would need to be a cost for obvious reasons, but that would need to be minimised somehow :-\
I wouldn't have any real issues with paying for the privilege of holding a licence, but it has to be a reasonable cost

and you can tell insurance dont want it writen off and they give you money to do it yourself i did

Bad news but at least no one was hurt. It wasn't until someone recently pointed out that I was moving paper work away from me to read it that I realised my eyesight is deteriorating. Time for me to take an eye test and admit i'm getting older ::) ;D

I'm one of the older generation of drivers. having driven a hgv for 44yrs it's not just older drivers that scare me i've had quite a few near misses from young drivers. tailgating. cutting in front of me forcing me to brake or hit them. i wonder how some of them ever pass the driving test these days you have to a mind reader to keep from having an accident.
-
couple off years back i was parked at the local tip as i was walking back to my car an elderly gent came through the gate and drove 40 yrds right into the rear of my motor he got out and said i didnt see it ? didnt do bugger all to my car but the front of his rover was buggered he was waering bottle bottoms for glasses was not completly all there unfortunatly for him next bloke to me was a copper ,bloke was written up there and then he couldnt see a barn door and had been driving about like that for ages ,thats what happens when you drive into the rear of a jacked up range rover which has a tow bar .just glad it was me and not a school kid .
report him before he kills, plus he prob knew he,d done it dont let old age fool you some tricky old buggers out there.

I also am one of the older drivers, I have to have a DVLA eye test every three years due to an illness, this gives them the power to revoke my licence if I fail it, not a nice position to be in I assure you, yet i have eye tests every six months as part of the monitoring of my illness by the hospital anyway, but DVLA will not accept those results and it is a much better examination I get then.
Please do not put all older people in the same scope, i still consider my driving to be good, but i was taught how to drive properly when i was a young pc, and have driven most things in many different parts of the world since.
Young drivers cause more accidents than older drivers and are just as likely to drive off without informing anyone, hence the high insurance premiums.
sorry to have to get on my high horse but felt that I had to defend the more mature driver.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely... That's why I think all drivers should have to have periodical assessments ;)

Sorry to hear this Phil, glad the dogs and the mrs are OK.....Insurance aside, as swmbo car would be a write off if reported, I think you should report this to the Police.....
As for regular testing of drivers, I have no objection to this, I have to do this for my psv/hgv anyway, but question if this should be an age thing, as most poor drivers are younger........... :-\ :-\ :-\
-
just think what would happen do those dogs in a high speed accident?
dogs loose in a car, should be 6 points on your licence.

that is so true last year my daughters car was rear ended in the snow that we had :( her insurance increased because of it :( the thing was she wasnt even in the car it was parked up on side of road !!!!!!!!!!! >:(
