Ok, so not asking here to restart the for and against camps over winter tyres but...
I am desperately needing new tyres all round and given the liklyhood of the sub 10 degrees celcius continuing for a few more months I am going to get something a little more appropriate to the climate than the usual Kumho KU3 / Falken 452 for my 16's and then get some summer tyres on 17's in April / May.
The question is does anybody have ACTUAL experience of running Winter or All-Weather tyres on their Mig??
I was looking at the Kumho I'Zen but the reviews suggest it is poor on anything other than snow so am veering towards the Pirelli Sottozero or Kumho KH21 Solus Vier.
90% of my time is on the M4 but the couple of miles at each end can be really slippery.
I know I have sort of missed the boat for this year but at least I will have worn them in for next autumn with 250 miles a week going on them.
For the record, Aviva now only want to know that you are running winter tyres for their records but it does NOT affect your premium.
Thanks in advance for constuctive comments!

I have Goodyear UltraGrip 8s on mine at the moment, have had since November (195/65R15 on steels) - great tyres, a little extra noise at motorway speeds or when cornering hard but great grip in all conditions so far, good progressive breakaway (ahem) and they don't feel 'squirrelly' at all.
I suspect having driven them in ~12C days and driven on them pretty hard I'll only see two or maybe three seasons out of them (November-March) but they were pretty inexpensive really, all things considered.
-
as said Goodyear UG8 is the way to go for winter..
Kumho KW19 also not bad but wont worth for the price difference.. UG8 is the test winner..
besides if you are looking for the cheapest option to use all year , goodyear vector 4 season not that bad on snow..
worth looking..
http://www.goodyear.eu/home_en/tires/vector-4seasons/index.jsp (http://www.goodyear.eu/home_en/tires/vector-4seasons/index.jsp)
must note also , I never believe in all season tires.
ps: every year I'm regularly driving on snow and ice , this year more for than a month :(

These are very good and I am surprised they have them in stock and at that price:

cem, UG8 are not available in the Omega 16 tyre size. So far I have only seen UG2 in 225/55/16. The UG8 are available in a 15" size, but if I read correctly the OP referred to a 16" tyre.

225 definitely not recommended for winter.. 205/55 16 is ok.. and besides I'm using 195 :y

ps: if you want to go for the best snow tire Nokian wr series are very good but worse on wet surface compared to UG8

also for 215,225 size there is Ultra grip extreme model , which is better on ice but wet performance a bit degraded..

these are studdable but no need for that..

Yes I am on 225/55/16
I hav got through the last 3 winters fine on summer sport 225 so I am not going to go narrower and smaller rolling radius.
Yes - I have just discovered that UG8 are not available in the 16.
other ideas??
-
I am not necessarily looking for ultimate snow grip - we do only get a few days a year but I want to have some thing that is a whole heap better than shot FK452's knowing that I will put some good performance tyres on in late spring and revert back to the 'winter' tyres at the back end of this year.
-
Been using ContiWinterContacts for the last 3 months in 205/55/16, can't complain other than increased road noise.
I'll let you know how I get on in an empty car park tomorrow. :D

Whats the recommended options from Vx in the manual then??
-
"All tyre sizes given here may be used as winter tyres"
Hmmm.........................
-
True enough, but narrower tyres work better on snow.
-
For Y26SE the tyre options are, according to handbook:
205/65/15
225/55/16
235/45/17
195/65/15 (M&S)
-
True enough, but narrower tyres work better on snow.
I can understand that but we will probably have 3 days of snow a year so I could sacrifice un petit bit of ultimateness in snow for the rest of the winter where it is just a little frosty / cold.
As said, it is all relative to current experience...
Back on track of the post - any suggestions / experiences of a 225/55/16 winter (ish) tyre.
Nokian WR A3 has also been suggested to me.

cem, you have a valid point, but if I were to use a winter tyre that is not approved by the manufacturer in terms of size as listed above, then my insurance is invalid. Therefore I moved down from 17 MV6 alloys to 16 CD alloys and am using the prescribed size which in turn means that I am driving legally. On the other hand if I use 205 or whatever smaller sizes that you have suggested, it is an issue that my insurers will try to wriggle out of in the event of a claim. I would suggest the OP look at the 2 options I have provided, both of them are class leading tyres, both at a very reasonable price. If they are available and in stock I would suggest you hurry and get a pair ASAP! I am sure with the snowfall there will be an exodus to buy the remaining stock up.
-
And yes I have used both of them and currently am using Dunlop 4D, because I couldnt get hold of the ones I have listed when I was looking to buy. The Conti is a fantastic tyre and I am surprised it only costs £124. Last time I looked they were about £150.
I don't recommend all weather tyres unless you have absolutely no space to store a second set.

nokian wr series ok.. goodyear ultragrip extreme ok.. conti ts 830 ok..contiicecontact ok..
but 225 size for winter is really weird ;D
imo talk to your insurance, some (as I posted before from honest john UK) insurance firms even claim you must not use them and charge extra ??? :P
ps: for combined ice, snow, wet(rain) performance UG8 very good.. conti models are more directed towards ice,snow..
-
must add dunlop 4d is also very good .. :y

As I said earlier, my insurance only want to know that I have winter tyres on an will not charge more.
As for 225 being 'weird' vauxhall dont spec another size option so in my eyes that is what I haveto stick to.
If it were my call then 225/55/16 on a 7 inch rim was lunacy in the first place but then vx do some REALLY weird calls on putting tyres too wide for their rims (205 on 6.5j on astras or yore!!!) - I digress but you get my point!
As I asked in the first place, simply some views one tred patterns to chose from, nowt else please!

I would agree. From the article regarding winter tyres and insurance:
Each insurer has a slightly different approach to winter tyres, and so the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has published a list of insurers and their different policies regarding winter tyres.
None of the insurers in the list charge an extra premium when winter tyres are fitted, provided that the tyres meet, and are fitted in accordance with, the relevant vehicle manufacturers’ specifications and are in a roadworthy condition whilst in use.

I would like to make a drag on ice with a 3.2 installed with 225 against my 2.5 installed 195 ;D in front of those insurers ;)

so as a conclusion, if you are living in a hilly-icy area
for rears ice model tires(and promise to drive slow in rain)
fronts combined model tires

Agreed.... :y is this the reason we have so many more problems with snow than in the 60's/70's and earlier, when we regularly had snow in the winter and most car tyres were 145/13 or thereabouts :-\ :-\ :D :D

I am currently using Kumho KW27 (iZen) in this size on the BMW. Last year the BMW was absolutely useless with all year tyres. I have driven many miles tonight in the snow and ice and the traction, grip (during cornering and braking) is a revelation :y :y
I never thought the Bavarian Muck Wagon would ever see snow and ice again.
From my experience I can recommend these tyres :)

there are 4 different (actually 2) izen models .. kw19,kw22,kw23(better- same-similiar design) , kw27 (directed towards performance)

As far as I can see here in the UK there is only the option of the 27 hence I refer only to the izen meaning the 27.
Look Cem - I guess you are meaning well but you are not really contributing much in the way of constructiveness to this thread, just taking it off in some random directions. Can you please get off that high horse, remove that chip from your shoulder and understand what the actual requirement of a thread is for. Thanks - I'm off.

They are a massive improvement over traditional all season tyres, in all of the aforementioned conditions.
I took the Omega out for a run a couple of weeks ago when it was just above freezing and the roads were wet. It did slide around a fair bit( i was pushing it). I then did the same in the BMW and it did feel remarkably stable in comparison. I only speak from experience, others may feel differently? Good luck in the search :)

I have always found cem very friendly, helpful and constructive and a credit to this forum and has provided much sound, constructive and helpful advice which has helped many, many members. He is trying to point out that cold weather grip in snow is down to psi and by this I don't mean air pressure, but pounds per square inch contact patch pressure. With a higher contact pressure, the tyre will cut through the snow better, due to pressure but also instant heat generated on the same principle that an ice skate works like this by momentarily causing the ice to melt. Please don't forget that the space saver tyre is only 195, so can be used on the car.
As he lives in a heavy snow area in winter in Turkey, he is giving up his free time to help you and to give you the benefit of his experience. You are perfectly entitled to take his advice or not under the old adage "that advice is worth what you have paid for it". But personally when somebody is trying to help you, but not giving you what you want to hear, I would personally ask you to please not throw your toys out of your pram as it is IMHO against the OOFers ethos where we are all trying to help each other. :(

Agreed.
does anybody have ACTUAL experience of running Winter or All-Weather tyres on their Mig??
Seems to me that Cem was right on the money, answering the OP's question. :-\
-
Ive got nokian wr tyres on my pug 106 excellent in the snow last year, ive run them all year & even last 2days no probz & are wearing very well... only 2mm worn over 8000miles :) so i would reccomend the nokians if they do them in your size!!
On my mig mv6 ive got 17" alloys mitchelin pilot alpines on the rear, Hankook icebear on front & both work well even tho the rears have only 3mm of tread!!
But my favourite tyre has to be the Dunlop sp3 all season tyres (NEW STYLE D4) ive had them on my renault traffic 215 65 16 & laguna never had any issues with them... did 30k on last set on the laguna 150bhp model in 215 55 16s
On my Gfs BMW 318is ive fitted verdestine on front & goodyear ultragrip in a 215 55 16 & she says the goodyear rears are very good as they are new but the verdestine with 5mm good in snow & good in wet but useless on standing water as not directional!!!
i run winter tyres all year round because in the summer they are soft enough to grip the roads (ok do wear more), great for when a odd 30sec downpoor on a dry road when road is greasy still grip.. wet grass.. heavy rain dispurse water really well due to the extra little grippers on tread & obviously like now you dont get caught out if snow falls!!
But there are plenty of part worn garages around the country!! most stocking 5mm tread tyres for under £35 fitted & a new winter with 8mm will easy be £100 a corner! so save sum money mate!
i can souce part worns any size any type from my 20+ contacts but due to weather most garages will put prices up & most will be out of stock...
For the amount of use they will get ide fit a good matching pair on each axel (Directional on fronts for standing water) on partworns ive never had any probs... u can get a set for around £120 better than £400ish
Mainly because Germany switzerland etc have different laws on there tyre legal limits & they are imported over here with plenty of life left in them :y most of them really good winter tyres!!
The choice is endless really but ive found some cheep winters better than the most exspensive premium tyres!!

Can you please get off that high horse, remove that chip from your shoulder and understand what the actual requirement of a thread is for. Thanks - I'm off.
Nicely put Rod. :y
Indeed. :y :y
Cem may well go on about winter tyres a lot and even I get fed up ignore what he says sometimes :-[ ::), but he does have good experience of them and shares his information :y :y
Perhaps you were caught at a bad time, but your reply was a little OTT ;)

Got to admire cems knowledge on tyres, but he does seem to forget what country the majority of members live in. We don't have Turkeys climate here. We just don't.
And if this is as bad winter gets by spring I mite be regretting buying winter tyres and extra wheels, if I'd have bothered in the first place ;D

Ah yes, the virtual world of the Internet. It gets bigger/smaller every day. ;D

Hi,
I'm currently using 225/55 M+S winter tyres on a 16" alloy.
Had them on since late October
Conti M+S on Rear and Verdestein Wintrac on the Fronts.
No complaints so far. Up to my armpits(sic) in snow this morning and dug my self out. What with the 'snowflake' button and my M+S's never missed a beat and hasn't proved too much of a problem noise-wise either. Came down the A11/M11 this morning in the freezing wet and was completely happy.
Has been very surefooted on the uncleared roads round here so far
Next winter I shall change to 195's (Thanks for the info Stu!) as it would appear pertinent to do so.
Can you put a 195 on a 16" wheel? ?195/55 or 195/65? (Given the 195's seem set up for 15's)
Looking forward to getting back to 17's and sunshine and warmth!
Matthew
