Bit of a conundrum here, the recovery driver who took me over to pick up my calibra mentioned an abandoned Omega outside his lock up, been there for 4 years at least and no one in neighbouring units knows who's it is and it has never been touched in that time.Had a mooch at it today and it's a champagne V reg 2.5 td that appears not to have been taxed since 2007 and is very mossy and dirty. I was hoping for a silver mig as I want some doors but it would still yield some useful parts both for myself and fellow oofers plus the shell is worth a few quid scrap.
Either I take it or the pikeys will.
Would you have it away?
-
Yep! ;D
-
In Liverpool ?
Has it still got its wheels ? :-X ;D ;D
-
I think you've had 'one too many' scouse & are seeing things! :D Still seeing abandoned Omega's is better than Pink elephants anyday!!! ;D ;D ;D
-
Technically, its still stealing.
-
let the pikeys have it, technically it is stealing, it may have been dropped off by a different recovery agent expecting it to be moved on by the company you used? maybe it is just abandoned if its locked up and no ignition damage then it wasnt abandone?. if its unlocked and looks like a shitter you have to ask yourself is it really worth gaining a criminal record for?
-

so that makes it okay then?
-
If I had a need for it like you do, it would be mine ;)
-
It's definately not worth just taking it and getting your collar felt, but I wonder if there is any way of making a claim to it legally... :-\
-
The difference is that the pikeys will get away with nicking it.
-
If its really been sat there for 4 years - ave it. ;)
-
After 4 years I would have thought the council would have removed it, and if it has been there for 4 years why would the 'Travelers' suddenly want to take it now?
-
use the reg number to do a dlva check! its probably abandoned owing to duff auto box
-
If you can find a way to legally claim it, EG contact the reg keeper and offer to take it off their hands - then crack on - if not, be careful, 'cause technically you'd be stealing the car, regardless of how long it's been there / state it's in....
:y
-
use the reg number to do a dlva check! its probably abandoned owing to duff auto box, leaking cam covers, knackered crank sensor, cambelt overdue, shagged wishbones, steering idler and track rods, broken rear springs, furbar central locking, sunrooof with a mind of its own - and he couldnt afford to put petrol in it anyway.
Sounds familiar. :y ;D ;D

I nearly spat my dinner out ;D :y

Sorry. :D ;D

Technically, its still stealing.
yep it is stealing by finding... :y...

Apply to the DVLA for a logbook in your name.
They will write to the last registered keeper and if they hear nothing back they grant you the V5 and the car is yours.
Perfectly legal - done it myself a few years back and got myself a whole load of spares for my Carltons!
I checked with the local plod first and was told it was fine.

Nice one... :y I thought there was a legal way of dealing with this.... :y :y
-
Yep totally agree with that..done it myself some years ago with a carlton.. :y
-
im not sure, on logbook it does say registered keeper is not nessicary the legal owner, just who responsible for taxing it
-
If it was me the last thing i would of done is put a thread up about it :D But then thats just me LOL ;D

What with a duff auto gearbox and broken rear springs - have you no shame ;D ;D ;D ;D

I would be careful of this one - assume the rights of the owner and you're in the territory of theft should you remove the car or anything from it.
It may help to try Murph's suggestion and contact the DVLA as a first step. You might find that they're slightly more reluctant to provide this service in the absence of a fee - it they do it at all nowadays given the litigious society we live in and the disinclination for 'civil servants' to expose their arses to anything much more than a seat cushion.
In any event, you will have to show due diligence in your attempts to contact the owner through the last registered keeper by placing a notice in the local paper/ making local enquires/ contacting the DVLA and so on, steps that will perhaps make this more trouble than it's worth.
Of course the mere fact of informing anyone in authority of the existence of an untaxed (and uninsured vehicle) vehicle parked up can be a game changer in this authoritarian country - as the vehicle may be seized and the former keeper pursued for unpaid taxes and any other liability that applies.
-
I am wondering if that vehicle is sorned at the moment as if not a large bill could end up through the letterbox of anyone wanting to own it.

I can't remember how long the SORN system has been in place. OP says the last tax disc is 2007, so you could be talking over £1000 in unpaid tax!! :o

Hmmmm free doesn't seem so cheap then does it :D :D

FWIW in my Hillman Imp days (let's say about 30 years ago..) my mate's GF told us about an Imp abandoned in a car park for several months...we turned up and started taking some bits off.
Shortly after we were duly arrested (young bobby) and carted off.
We were eventually charged with theft.
The case went to court but was dismissed after about 90 mins on the grounds of no case to answer. The get out being that we genuinely believed that the owner had abandoned her interest in the car.
I think they call this finding out the hard way - not recommended!
-
;D C'mon guys, nothing is ever free, if an authority of any description found out it was there, someone will have to pay,or rather than let you take it they will crush it, lets face it, now even if theres a hint of no tax, insurance or mot they will crush it, its sort of like a perverse godlyness ;D
Take it and strip it and the old bill will be feeling your collar quicker than paint dries, there's probably a bloke watching it now,has been since 2007, waiting to nick someone for an unsolved murder or bank job ???
Wonder if they let you use their computer in the nick to get back on oof and tell us lol :y
-
Take it, I would :y
-
If you do and the paint code is 68L can I have first dibs on NSF wing, doors and boot? :y
-
Rent it out as a pad to some illegals ie Somalians wait a few weeks to see if they get evicted if not you evict them cars yours lol,
-
Is it on private property?
The other annoyance is V5 is not really proof of ownership, just confirmation of that vehicle being your responsibility... but that would change to suit no doubt!
