Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: no alarm / double lock
« on: 30 August 2009, 12:26:26 »
On my facelift I had the same problem until I noticed that the couresy light on the driver's door was not working. I changed the door switch and the alarm and double locking then worked.

Sorry - in reply to uk- to remove the head unit you remove the small allen screws from the front that stop you getting the standard u shaped removers into the holes then remove it in the same way as any car radio. The aerial connector at the back is fixed so it connects as you push the unit back in.

When it happened to me a few years ago I unscrewed the roof aerial, removed the head unit and used a long piece of wire and a meter to check that I had continuity throughout the aerial. Discovering that I had, I decided that the unit itself must have developed a fault and then discovered that, at the time, Vx offered a reconditioned unit for £75 exchange. When I slotted the new one in everything worked again. This is probably not what you wanted to hear but I think that it is worth checking the continuity of the aerial before you do anything else.

probably a stupid suggestion but are you sure that you haven't got a mat rucked up under the accelerator pedal to stop the last inch of travel?

With the ignition on press the tuner button.
Scroll down to functions and select
Make sure mode retainment is ticked otherwise tick it.
It will now switch on amd off with the ignition. If it is not selected the tuner switches off an hour after the ignition is switched off.

As the previous post said replace the brake switch. As you will have noticed you cannot move out of park unless your foot is on the brake. When the brake switch fails you cannot move out of park because the relay does not know that your foot is on the brake!

Almost certainly the maf sensor. I had exactly the same problem and after several visits to VX agent I decided to sort it out myself. I bought a genuine Bosch replacement MAF off the internet (much cheaper then VX). Took about 20 minutes or less to fit - instant cure. The fault code only registers when you are in closed loop mode (i.e. engine warm) and it takes three occurrences of this code to trigger the eml. I can give you a detailed explanation of why the long term fuel is affected if you want but it takes a lot of typing.

I had this on my 3.2. Having thoroughly checked for an air leak I changed the mass air flow meter and it gave an instant cure. ( I bought a genuine Bosch one off the internet far cheaper than VX parts.)

When the engine is cold it is in open loop mode and the mixture is set according to the engine map - it measures the air flow and uses the correct amount of fuel. Any problems with the mixture will not generate a fault code.
Once the engine has warmed up it goes into closed loop mode where the lambda sensors check the oxygen content of the exhaust gases. The correct mixture is sensed as zero by the short term fuel trim and it oscillates slightly about this figure (which improves the efficiency of the catalyst). If the mixture is wrong the long term trim adjusts the zero point until it is correct ( this allows for slight deterioration in sensors etc). The long term fuel trim keeps doing this until it is correct . When it runs out of adjustment (about + or - 20%) it stores a fault code. When this happens on successive starts the eml comes on.

The maf sensor gets dirty. If therefore senses a lower air flow than it is actually getting. The fuel trim richens the mixture to compensate but eventually runs out of range. Although you are supposed to be able to clean the sensor with carb or switch cleaner it did not work for me.

The maf is easy to change.

Omega General Help / Re: Fault code

I had a problem with eml light and codes P0173 and p0170. VX changed a split vacuum pipe which needed doing but did not solve the problem. The two codes related to fuel trim malfunction on banks 1 and 2. When VX gave up I researched my own solution.

When the car is cold it is running in open loop mode. This means that it takes information from the airflow meter (amongst others) and injects the correct amount of fuel to match the air according to its engine map. When the engine warms up it goes into closed loop mode in which the front oxygen sensors test the mixture. If this mixture is incorrect it adjusts the short term fuel trim and also adjusts the long term fuel trim to take account of wear and tear. When it runs out of long term fuel trim adjustment it triggers the codes and the eml.
In my case the long term fuel trim was + 25%. This means that the mixture was far too weak and it was pumping in extra fuel in closed loop mode to try and compensate. This could be caused by
a) a massive air leak
b) the car underestinating the amount of air that was going in.

I used a cheap tech 2 to check the measured air flow and found that it was less than half of what was expected from a scorpio 2.9 which was the only car I could get a figure for (and which I expected to be similar to my 3.2).

The air flow meter contains sensor wires. I removed it and tried cleaning the wires but that had no effect. I bought a Bosch airflow meter on the net for £130 ( compared with VX about £250) and changed it. Immediately the long term fuel trim went down to zero on both banks and the airflow doubled. The eml has stayed off since.

I think that if your car has run out of the ability to enrich the fuel because your sensor is very dirty you could be getting a weak mixture which would give you difficult starting and running although I would expect this to give cold start problems as well.

Please ignore the typos in the last post. I am sure that you will still understand it.

It can run perfectly and still have a problem and. In my case the light was coming on regularly with the codes for fuel trim malfunction on both banks. Vx dealer did a lot of investigation ( for which they did not charge me in the end) and suggested that either both cats had gone or the ecu was faulty. After doing a lot of investigation myself I suspected the airflow meter, changed it and the problem has gone. The car was getting a false ready from the maf sensor and was adjusting the mixture to compensate but when it runs out of adjustment it puts the light on.

Many thanks for the nice comments - they could have all begun with "You're an idiot". The nice people on here is one of the reasons why I am staying on the forum. I am always amazed by the stuff that people on here know and by the way that they are prepared to go out of their way to help others - sometimes literally.
