Hi , yes the body & colour of the elite is better than the GLS, plus its got a functioning electic sunroof The thought of swapping all the bits and pieces to bring it up to Elite spec is a bit daunting....
Complete leather interior, electric seats
all electric windows
different better interior lights
better dash with electronic aircon
xenon lights
music system matching carpets
self leveling suspension ( but dont think it works)
Passenger airbag
I would have thought that I would have to put a new loom in? would that be the case?
A weekend to swap the engine & box just seems a bit more straight forward. BUT I am moving a good engine into a body and mechanicals that have done 315,000  vs 150,000!

Thanks Omegatoy...... you are helping me make the right choice here
The GLSis an S reg and the Elite an R. just a point... I tried swaping the computers....the part numbers were the same. When I did neither car would start and the eml lights flashed. I did the same with the air volume unit and it had no effect on the elite......but it cured an intermittant eml light flashing and restored the power to the GLS!!!! which was the reason I got a bit fed up with it and chanced my arm on the much higher specked elite....which I really like.....but I had a feeling in my bones that I was taking a chance with it even though it seemed to perform OK on the long test drive I gave it. Its the ist time in buying cars that  have trusted to luck .....and the last time!! I just got seduced by the leather seats and nice spec ( 50 next year and never had leather seats) Now I,ve got a nice car that won,t go anywhere!!   315,000 miles I must have been mad!
Is it easier to swap both the engine and box, ( they are both manual) and do they swing out in one lump?

Hey thanks for the advice.........the timing /chain slip makes sense as it did get suddenly alot worse.......what would the symptoms of a dicky diesel pump be as up until yesterday it was not running very well in that it struggled to do over 70 and was gutless.... What I am concerned about is if I swap the engine from my other Omega 2.5 GLS 150,000 miles I might still end up with problems if it is the the diesel pump ( I am assuming it is in the tank!)
Also how big a job is the engine swap ( from GLS to elite spec) will I still get all the bells and whistles and will the cables fit
If it is the diesel pump how easy is it to pehaps just swp the pump from the GLS?
If I can trailer the elite to get it checked out electonically will it tell us what is wrong with it. I am not getting an engine warning light even though it is nackered!

Hi wait for it........... The speedo says , but no history whatsoever and the interior seems too good  for.........315,000 The oil and filter were changed 100 miles ago. At 8.30 last night it ran as it had been doing, low on power Ok on start up at 11.30  it was horrendous! I had put some redex diesel clean in full tank 50 miles ago

Last night started 2.5TD elite ,took ages to catch on then loads of black smoke had to rev hard to keep going sounded like there was a million nuts & bolts in engine...no power ...just managed to get us up hills. Started this morning....just same problem. Car done alot of miles had new glow plugs / diesel filter/ oil change/filter. No warning lights showing does not improve when warm. cannot drive in this state. Swapped airflow meter ( from my other TD) no joy. Swapped computer ( from other TD) no joy but it brought the EML on flashing We had a problem starting it last week & paid £222 to have coil heaters replaced + diesel magiced solved the starting but engine very gutless, was going to get the car checked for fault codes until this happened Once started u have to rev like hell to keep it running and it only just moves. I am fairly sure the engine does not use oil or water. Please advise as I am a my wits end with it.
How easy is an engine swap? thinking of putting the 2.5TD from my GL 2.5TD into it Will all the sensors cables fit ( elite)

Stat fairly easy on TD, hardest bit is getting the bloody viscous off, once thats off, its really quick from there.
Hey thanks for the reply.....where is the damn stat I bought one today from a motor factor. He recconed the 2.5 Td was not a BMW engine and gave me one labelled rover ( I think it did go in the rangerover?)  If somebody has done a step by step instruction on how to change it (like the one for the V6 on this site) please tell me where it is.
Does your main fan spin from cold startup?

My first auto est ran between 81 & 90 & did 33mpg. My elite runs at over 95, sometimes up to 100, also does 33mpg. Very little city commutes, The mid is not reliable 1st gave 38mpg, 2nd gave 57mpg current reads 29mpg. I guess your gls is a manual.
What did you pay for the elite?

Thanks for the feedback, I have done an accurate check on mpg today filled back to brimful...and i got 30.2mpg ( computer told me it was 27.5 so not quite as bad as I expected! I have been driving it very gently though.
i still think I have got a stuck open stat. I paid £1500 ...its done lots of miles

Omega General Help / How to change thermostat on Omega2.5TD
« on: 02 October 2007, 10:13:41 »
Hi I am a new member I have just bought a 97 omega 2.5TDelite estate
My most immeadiate problem is I think low mpg ( 27) driving it like a baby
My previous 2,5TD GLS estate did 33+
I am fairly sure the stat is stuck open...for the following reasons
It takes ages to warm up
It runs between 85(1st mark on guage)& 90 ( last one did 95 steady)
If you start up from cold the top hose to the rad starts to get warm st away
Also the main engine fan( I presume it is the big one between the engine and the rad) does spin as soon as you start up even from cold ( but the same happens with the other motor) I have ...very carefully pressed a stick on it while it is spinning and it is fairly easy to stop it. I gather that it is driven by a viscous coupling and that these are prone to seize.....should this fan only come on at high temperatures? Can I stop it from starting to spin when is should not ( ie engine cold)
If somebody can give me an idea as to how easy it is to change the stat..iI would be grateful....I cant even see where it is!
I think that if I can get it warming up quicker my mpg will improve
